Yeah, Mike. ELO was the first concert I saw. The orchestra section featuring a glossy blue enamel cello. I remember because I played strings... never saw anything like that! 👀 There were lasers and a stage full of musicians making music that sounds and feels like that. It was a big deal for me.

Same! I first heard 3 of ELO's songs on the radio, and the DJ did say something like, "Here's a block of ELO," and played The Eldorado Overture, Can't Get It Out of My Head, and Roll Over Beethoven, in the summer of '75, age 8. I was mesmerized, permanently hooked, though it was several years later that I learned that the first two were two separate songs. I recognized Roll Over Beethoven from having heard Chuck Berry, and the Beethoven's Fifth intro was a cool addition. Over the next 5 years, I heard several ELO songs; some of which I knew was them, some I heard but didn't know who the songs were by. In the autumn of '80, I heard a 2-hour Westwood One history of ELO, though I don't remember the actual title of the show, and I knew most of the songs; for some, though, I hadn't realized they were by ELO. I was more of a fan than I realized! I sometimes wish I could hear ELO's songs for the first time again, as an adult, just for that thrill.

@@tjl4041 The only song I hear from it on radio or setlists is "Hold on Tight" which is a great anthem, but there is so much more the album has to offer. "Ticket to the Moon" as a piano ballad; "Way Life's Meant to Be", "Lights Go Down"; "21st Century Man", "Yours Truly, 2095" - It's an album I find difficult to listen to one song without listening to the whole album. It would be amazing to see if the story of it could be adapted as a musical one day.

The reason this song is so great is that Jeff Lynne never let it get boring. Something is a little different in every verse section, pre-chorus and chorus. Maybe the arrangement is a little different (example: the lead in to the second chorus is lighter and higher than the first round). Maybe a vocal line is dropped in from out of the blue, or there's an instrument playing the same riff another instrument played elsewhere. The hard vocal breakdown near the end is beyond inspired. You're thinking they'll do the standard chorus codas to the end, then they make you sit up hard at the sudden--but completely believable--change. This is fantastic pop songwriting. Should be taught in musicology classes everywhere.

“ Fire on High “ was the song that they would use in the “ Sports Center “ television ads! I had to do a serious deep internet dive to find the song ( they would only use that fast bit with the violins ) ! I think I started with “ Fanfare for the Common Man “ if you can believe that! Lol! That spoken word bit that is run in reverse is freaky as hell! Lol! Awesome tune!

Saw ELO live back in 1978 at the Cow Palace near SF, right after their "New Worlds Record" album was released. The Best live concert I've ever attended. The original group had cello's and violin playing members in the group! They have an incredimazing sound and lead singer Jeff Lynne has a one of a kind voice! A laser light show played throughout the concert and was bouncing off the walls.. BTW, Jeff Lynne is a master of song lyrics. One of the greatest songwriters from back in the day, who wrote many hit songs for other artists. 🙂

JAJ -- You are SO much fun to watch when you're discovering another gem from a great band (Like ELO). And I can tell from your reactions that you are hearing EVERYTHING in the song -- picking up on all of it. You can listen to virtually ANY ELO song -- they are all great. Jeff Lynne was a perfectionist, so once a track is laid down, you know that you're going to be hearing something great.
