One Epic from the technical side of singing, they’re all probably singing either “ah” or a slightly modified “aoh” sound. An “ah”/“a” vowel is the most open in the mouth structure allowing for more passage of air, therefore, less strain on the voice/vocal chords.

In my brain Idina Mendel will ALWAYS be Elphaba and sing it the best.......but my homegirl hitting it up with the last riff had me screaming and cheering with everyone!!!!! (8:38) Best change and power in protecting firmly on the notes and holding that last note that long was wonderful. I had vocal training For many years and trust me guys not just anyone can pick up the sheet music and do it like that......lots and lots of practicing/training and strengthening

After listening to all of these, I actually prefer those who simplified the riff and nailed the notes rather than those who showed range and were not solid. I love a good, wild, goose bump provoking run, but with this being so iconic, to me, nailing it outweighs the fancy. I'll take Wills F5 growl any day of the week.

I honestly hate when people try to throw an unnecessary run in there. Not only does it mess up the cue and timing for the ensemble and orchestra, it’s just ridiculously extra. The role of Elphaba is hard enough and showcases your talent plenty all on its own as written. When people throw runs in Defying Gravity or throw a run or step up in the FIYYEERRROOOO of No Good Deed, it irks me to no end. Just sing it as written and I guarantee you people will still be impressed.

I actually enjoyed the extra notes. It’s the most powerful part of the story for Elphaba as she tells the entire world that she’s not being controlled and she’ll use her own power to be on top. So hitting those notes as strongly as they can and with their own expression of Elphies feelings, is the best thing in Broadway. And I love to see it.

Although it’s not all that high, F5 is a hard note to belt like this even with proper technique and training, so selective use is a pretty standard way to make sure not to overuse or even blowout your voice. I saw it a lot when I worked in theater.

@@IvyPoit "not all that hard to sing"??? Please sit down you definitely don't know what you're talking about. Very few people can belt out f5/g5s in CHEST voice. This is wearing on the voice over time hence why many performers decide when they will and won't go for that note. Remember, this note in chest voice is much higher than most singers mixed voice break.
@IvyPoit
@IvyPoit 2 жыл бұрын
@@anthonywill Good morning! Please reread what I wrote, not only because you are misquoting me, but because you misunderstood what I said to the point that you actually just regurgitated my comment as if you’re contradicting me. I quite literally said it IS hard to sing, but that it’s “not all that high” as in on a scale or in the grand scheme of these performers abilities. I specifically wrote that it’s “hard to belt like this” in chest voice, hence “selective use” so as “not to overuse or even blow out your voice” (THOSE are quotes). If it’s not clear, “selective use” means exactly what “will or won’t go for” does in your comment, and my “overuse” is parroted by your “wearing on the voice over time.” However, I had no equivalent to “sit down you definitely don't know what you're talking about,” because I am not the kind of person who is eager to be a patronizing asshole on the Internet. @matt7luck
@matt7luck 4 жыл бұрын
The note itself isn't particularly high, (though it is at the top of the range for most of these ladies) the difficulty is in the type of signing required for this part/song it's not a healthy technique (like they do with opera bel canto) though they try to limit the strain on the voice, there is a certain rhaspiness quality required to "force the note out" with a lot of volume, sometimes referred to as belting. It's essentially screaming the note out (not particularly healthy) that's why this role is so difficult, it takes an incredible of stamina to be able to pull that off 8 times a weak without damaging the chords :)
