One of the biggest killers of creativity is poor workflow. Nothing stops a music-making session in its tracks like having to dig around for that sample, sound or effect you want to use...
In this live session, I walk you through the basics of getting organised in Ableton Live so you can always find what you're looking for.
You'll learn the basics of how files work in Ableton, how to best use The User Library and Collections, what the different file types are and much more.

Thanks for doing this, I REALLY needed it,I had no idea about the user library, I always just made custom folders in the browser. Also,I wanted to know how you go about getting ableton certified. Very Interested. Most of my producer buddies use either Pro Tools (Too Confusing,WAY TOO EXPENSIVE) Or FL Studio (WAY TOO CONFUSING). I DJ also and found ableton is the best all around,I started on the Maschine MK3 and Maschine 2 Daw,but sold it for my Push 2 and never looked back. I never could grasp the whole "Scenes and Patterns " gig. Thank You for all the informative videos and just all around Ableton help you give,You have no idea how much you have helped me jump light years ahead with Ableton,Sir you are an Ableton God!!!!

@@mikepowell6645 Thank you for the kind words! 😊 As for becoming Certified, check out: www.ableton.com/en/education/certification-program/. I think the process has been a bit up in the air because of COVID - usually Ableton has a Certification team that travels around doing events, but obviously they're not able to with COVID. In any case, check out the link and submit an interest form.

Truly one of the biggest barriers to getting into a "flow" and purely making music is the roadblocks from poor workflow or sample / sound accessibility. I think this tutorial is definitely a huge resource for tearing down some of that barrier and focusing on *_just making music_* .

I personally think that workflow improvement and organization is the most safest way to just keep going and finish your tracks and get more and more idea out of it. It’s like recovering from a huge headache, and suddenly all of your ideas are more clear and you really don’t have any more pain to just being focused. That’s said, I need to organize my stuff rn, so yeah, thanks you Tom for your time and I really really appreciate your content, most useful and clear Ableton Live instructor out there

Thanks for doing this buddy! This is imo one of the most important topic when working with a DAW (which basically is just a funny [musical] files manager) and yet nobody ever took the time to go in-depth with the topic. Very often I see people confused about how this all works, why they "lose" their files and so on, and since it's not possible to explain this quickly with a few lines on e.g a forum it's always hard to help others on this specific topic. I'm so glad I can now link to this video!

Also trying to get my head around this... Thanks for the info, I think I'm going to use your user folder system as clean and logical... Though as the collections can be 'tagged' directly from push 2, I think I shall try and keep the focus of the collections to use with push, not quite sure what that looks like, but I imagine for tagging sounds I chance upon when browsing that I can also later file away... So more my sounds of the moment I guess?

@@hendrikbisschoff The mic is the Røde PodMic - www.rode.com/microphones/podmic. Really affordable and sounds pretty decent. That goes straight into an interface, yeah. Such an amazing video! I love organization and workflow and this was just what I needed! One question... if I want to save samples (.wav or .aif) into my User Library, what would you recommend doing? Whenever I drag & drop it saves as .alc with all the processing. What if I just wanted the sample itself and for example one shot that I created in my project? Thanks for you help!
@ELPHNT
@ELPHNT 2 жыл бұрын
As great as .alc files are, sometimes you just want a good old sample, which can be annoying! 😅 There's not really a perfect way around this, but I usually just drop whatever I want into the Arrangement, Freeze and Flatten it and then do a File → Export Audio/Video. A bit long winded, but its about the quickest way to just get an actual .wav or .aiff sample 🤷‍♂️

What a shame I missed the session. I might have another question. I am struggling with files management when sampling an instrument. For instance I sample an external synth 2 octaves 3 notes per octave at 3 different velocities. Then use sampler to create an instrument out of it. Then I save the instrument into my user library and files get copied into imported. There it might get really messy. I tend to create a folder in my user library where I want to store these samples. Basically, within the user library, I move these samples to designated folder. However, then I have to relink the files within the sampler using manage files and save again. Is there anything easier? I have noticed that you touched the subject matter in your video and I noticed that you have the samples organized in a similar way I do. I really appreciate your answer. Best regards Roman

Great tutorial. Thanks for your time. One question though...I'm not sure if this is something related to newer versions of Live Suite 11 but if you add an effect into your User Library folder (ie. Studio/Effects/Reverb&Delay) and after that you color code that folder in order to be shown under a collection (red color for example) Ableton creates automatically another folder named "Ableton Folder Info" wich is visible at the top of the list. Is this a new feature related to Syncing Collections between computers? Is there a workaround to hide this folder? Thanks again
@ELPHNT
@ELPHNT 2 жыл бұрын
I believe this is just a system file that Ableton uses to keep track of the Collection tags and so you can copy the User Library between machines and maintain all your settings. It shouldn't show up in The Browser and if you're using Collections anyway then the best thing is just to ignore it.
@papiertigre7843
@papiertigre7843 8 ай бұрын
Awesome content.. question though, for the collections.. is there a way to keep all the 'presets' that come with ableton. .example : i save the 'Scale' device into my user library's new MIDI Effects folder, which is connected to the 'Collections'.. however, the dropdown of all the stock 'Scale' presets are no longer available without going into the 'Categories', which is what im trying to avoid usuing.. is there a workaround for this? do i have to manually create these folders which will contain the Initialized preset at the top, then the rest of the presets below?
@ELPHNT
@ELPHNT 8 ай бұрын
Unfortunately there isn't a great way to do this as, as you said, saving the Scale device as its own adv file will not take the presets with it 🙄 The new Filters and Tags system on Live 12 might help with this and provide a better way to organise your library, but for now, the only way to get a device, including its presets, into Collections is to directly tag the device in the Categories...

I assume you mean like a Drum Rack where you have multiple samples loaded, but maybe some of them just aren't currently being used? Unfortunately there's no way to find those, other than manually diving through the Rack. If you're juts talking about samples that you've collected into the Project and then removed, go to File -> Manage Files... -> Manage Project or User Library, depending on what you wanna manage, and then check out the 'Unused Files' section to find those.

Probably the only way I could think of would be create a short clip that demos the sound and save that as a Live Clip (.alc) by dragging and dropping it into the library. That will save both the instrument and the MIDI clip, but the .alc file will preview in The Browser. You can then load the Clip which will load the instrument and the MIDI, then just delete the MIDI 🤷‍♂️

Good video and some interesting tips, but still a bit fiddly and a large upfront management cost for those with large libraries or moving computers, and all completely unnecessary if they just allowed us a few more collections colours.

Man I tried this and it really messed up my project folders. I am going to try just puting most everything on an external HD top level. Really cool idea though.

a lot of the stock audio and midi tools include presets. is there a way to move the tools along with their presets to the user library? Thank you for the tips bro!
@ELPHNT
@ELPHNT Ай бұрын
You'd have to save the presets individually as .adg files. Unfortunately there's no way to save it with all the presets included. I think some future updates to the new Live 12 Browser system is gonna change how this all works for the better though 😉

Hi ELPHNT, one of the hardest thing I've found moving to Ableton was how the Return Tracks are set up. You can't move them or group them, and creating audio tracks and routing them to act as Return tracks is a huge hassle. Then I saw Illangelo (The Weeknd's producer) using Effects Chains to act as Return Tracks, so most tracks on his production will have an Effects Rack with the clean chain, reverb chain, 1/4 delay chain, 1/8 delay chain etc. Do you have any insight on this?
@ELPHNT
@ELPHNT 3 жыл бұрын
I guess my insight is, yeah, you can do it 🤷‍♂️ It's really just a personal preference thing. Ableton Returns work pretty well for me most of the time, but there are certain situations where I find the parallel rack approach works pretty well. Definitely give it a try and see how it works for you.

Thanks for video my friend. I have a question that is confusing the tar out of me? I am ordering a new MacbookPro. They have option to upgrade internal SSD drive to 4 TB. My question can you use a single internal SSD drive to install everything (operating system, Ableton, Komplete, Plugins, documents and both audio and video projects? I like the idea of having a simple workflow and use a cloud based service or secondary drive to backup samples and projects. Just wondering now that they have these super fast processors and huge SDD drives if using a secondary drive is necessary. Thanks

If you've got the space I'd always recommend running as much as possible on an internal drive for max performance.

What's the delay at 16 min? It looks like stock or is it max for live, I can't seem to find it? The only similar I can get are simple delay and ping pong. Do they open up or? I am on Ableton 10. Looks like a more complex version of the simple delay? Thanks nice vid!
@ELPHNT
@ELPHNT 3 жыл бұрын
In Live 10.1 Ableton combined Ping Pong Delay and Simple Delay into just Delay, which really makes so much more sense than both of them separately. So you'll just need to update to 10.1 or higher to get that 😉

When I click on one of the collections (i.e. the red one), I just see a huge flat list of items under "Name". I noticed your list is organized underneath what looks like folders (with names like "Instruments", "Samplers", "Synths") with is WAY more useful. I've looked through the preferences wondering if I have something set incorrectly and can't find anything.

if you just copy your amxd files to your user library in the finder, live will not make a referene file/ it will just add the actual device, which you then can add to collections of choice. Installing a amxd by dragging as instrument first will create a mess. I simply copy any amxd files to a amxd folder im the user library. after that you can aimply move them around in folders and add them to collections if needed. just don't drag a new amxd file to a channel in ableton as a install method.

Yeah, it's essential a custom Ableton 'zipping' format. It is pretty good at compressing things, so it can be good for sharing session files with people, but honestly it's just an extra thing to have to do, so I hardly use it. About the only time I use it is if I'm packing up a project file to share online.
