Maybe... But my daughter would have punched that lady in the face and standing guilatined her after the first slap. I realize it's different now, but... Not to mention I would have visited her and her man for putting hands on my child. Just say'n

Best part is she didn't start slapping until the mother asked her to. Edit: some people don't seem to know how to read between the lines so let me explain. The mother told the lady that she could try to get her to change her mind. The mother may not have told her to slap her but she gave her permission to try something. There are a lot of people that will try to discipline other people's children without the mothers permission. It may not have been the way the mother expected her to discipline but she still didn't do anything until the mother asked.

Oh, it did something to me, alright. The moment I turned eighteen, I got out of the house and never looked back. Neither my mother nor my father saw me again. My children are growing up never seeing the shadow of their mother's hands imprinted on their skins, and they are all the sweeter for it.

Same. I am just now learning as an adult to be verbal with my needs and to fearlessly say "no" or "stop" when my boundaries are disrespected. Funny enough, kids love me and they do whatever I ask of them- with few refusals. Why? Because I'm respectful, treat them like people. They feel safe in questioning my motives, which makes them more likely to follow suit with whatever I want them to do. Shocking, right??

@@ladywesker5307 slapping might not work in every circumstance. In this instance it would. Going everyday and slapping your kids around would harden them because I'm sure they did something good that day but the still get a slap. But I would rather discipline my child in a control environment than let the them do something to someone where myself or my wife is not there, and worse happen to them from a stranger. You can speak to your child and reason with them everyday but taking some of their stuff back or grounding them could also harden them in their bad behaviour.

@@ladywesker5307ot as much.... Children need - and more importantly, they DESERVE the discipline it instills and the safety it provides by stopping them from unknowingly putting themselves in dangerous circumstances by not listening to their parents who know better - *Nobody except absolute psychopaths actually enjoys disciplining their children; it makes the parents feel horrendous and guilty too; but it is required on a few very rare occasions (which are usually enough to prevent bad/ill advised/ill informed behaviour in any case) Like I said:- children DESERVE to be brought up correctly, in safety and with knowing by the time they start to mature and grow up that even the things they disliked as a child....; Their parents were only ever doing what was necessary to protect them and keep them safe out of absolute love and devotion that they're now extremely secure in as adults or almost adults..... That's the ideal, imo!!!*

That is brilliant since I'm pretty sure that she didn't mean "Freedom of will" or "Freedom to achieve your goals", etc. BUT She was talking about "Freedom FROM Consequences". That sort of 'freedom' is ruinous to people and society and creates dishonorable and untrustworthy people.

Thank you for pointing it out cause some people took the other two types of freedoms and bit at them in other comments. Freedom of choice and freedom of expression are two simple freedoms everyone deserves! As long as one is responsible enough to not cause those freedoms to inhibit others’ freedoms. But freedom from consequences is something a lot of people in power have, albeit with quantity. Even they have a limit to that freedom. We all do. And we have very little of it to use. Many use it for the wrong things, instead of opting to avoid the consequences for something like a helpful or giving action (donating winter gear to the homeless and going unseen; it’s better than sharing that deed to the world and somehow, some way, getting wrongly punished for said deed).

Yeah, and anyone with common sense should know that that is NO way to discipline anyone, especially not a child or teenager. I've still got some emotional and mental scars from my Dad pushing me into walls, grabbing me roughly by the arm or shoulder and throwing me out of his way, slapping my head on a fairly common basis, and yelling at me constantly as a kid, he was always being angry with me, even when I did nothing wrong. Those scars on my mind and my emotions are STILL torturing me decades later. Emotional and mental scars are the hardest ones to remove, they're near impossible to get rid of, ask anyone who's been abused and you'll hear the same thing-they were too scared to stand up, knowing they'd be pushed down again, or in even worse situations of abuse; they'd end up dead if they still stood up.Abuse and physical violence is NOT the answer, talking things out and coming to an understanding IS. This is just a classic example of TERRIBLE PARENTING.

You don't dress down family members in public. It's one thing to criticize them in private, but this seems like a cutting insult layed out on a train in public. As a parent, my perspective on this has changed quite a bit. Not everyone is a good parent, and not everyone is a good parent at every stage. But some things have to be taught early. I struggle when parents don't discipline their kids early and it's obvious. I feel sorry for the parents spanking their child in walmart. (We've all had bad days though) That was once a rational normal person until this small creature venture forth from their body, trampled their dreams and finances, poops on them, pees on them, then decides to probe the depths of their patience, daily. (Kids are great though) There's no telling what that toddler has done to that parent. However, parents make it harder on themselves when they do not communicate and enforce expectaions and boundaries. Teaching a child to show and command respect is very underrated in our society. I think the teenager crossed a line, and the mom did nothing. I don't know that the slapping was best, but probably the only option a stranger has in this situation. It was effective in changing the tone of the girl, but not instructive. I don't know how this fits into the story, but I doubt it changed the parent child dynamic long term. Physical punishment is also a slippery slope. I think it has it's place, but there are alot of unintended consequences and you have to be careful not to do it in anger or frustration. The line between discipline and abuse gets too blurry.

I agree, and this coming from someone who was raised around families who did shit like this. The ones who really got popped when they got out of line usually just grew up and transferred the rage to other people. Parents who smack their kids like this just want to justify transferring that same anger they were dealt, low-key wanting their children to suffer like they did. The problem is, the rest of society has to deal with what those parents left behind.

By the time she was 10 she was ready to have a family. Now look at women? Most women, in the late twenties are nothing but girls trapped in adult's bodies, adults in a state of arrested development. @@swishersweetprofessional8286 I mean, I won’t, at least not directly. I can still acknowledge that it’s bad, tho. & I may at times be moved to tears by mistakes of the past, but not today. Are you saying that what they endured is good? Are you saying that suboptimal treatment is good? Bc the data doesn’t back that up. Guidelines & boundaries are important for kids, but you can get there without violence & avoid the risk factors. I probably should cry more than I do, but years of being told that crying is bad have left me somewhat out of touch. I’m more in touch now than ever, but I still struggle to release sadness. I can laugh, smile, get angry, etc. But tears mostly escape me & I don’t see that as a good thing. So, no, I won’t. But that does not mean that it isn’t sad.

The mom would not have needed someone else to do it. They are tempting to a nap Ron, this mom modern left-wing Democrat I don’t hit my kids type, and then they wanted to point out that this was the wrong way to do things and here’s how it played out because it was the wrong way to do things. Crazy how many people these days are still ok with physical abuse as a form of "parenting" judging by the comments. If you need the threat of harm to make a poitn to a child then you already failed as both a parent and human being.

Preach it, you're goddamn right. If you can't explain it to a child using words, you're no better than a child and you have no right to be trying to "teach" them anything. Using physical punishment is a sign of impatience and immaturity. Get a grip, people. Violence never "taught" anyone anything, except that they'd get hurt for doing something. What kind of a lesson is that, really??

@lolalina_
@lolalina_ 6 ай бұрын
@@michaelobrien5910 Well you make them used to being treated like that, if they don't obey you. When they grow older they will accept this treatment in marriage, in workspaces and friendships as well. Except if they reflect and realize that what you did is bad, then they might either cut contact to you, or never allow their kids alone near you. You think it works, because you get what you want and don't care that you make the pathway for evil people as well. Your children will rather trust a stranger who tells them "don't tell mommy/daddy, they will get angry at you", than listen to you when you say "if someone touches you, tell me", because the trust is broken. They know they will get physically hurt by you, when you are overwhelmed with them just being themselves and maybe having big emotions. They can trust that they can't trust you. And you can only pray that evil people won't notice this, but I assure you they do. I was a kid that got spanked a lot, and never told my parents the evil things others did to me, because I knew that my parents were weak. They couldn't handle my emotions how would they handle a whole traumatic event. Now I am an aduld and realize that my parents probably never learned to regulate themselves.. but I won't visit them ever again. I have some friends that also got hurt by their parents and thankfully we are all aware of this ab&se circle and stop it, because not realizing how bad spanking and other stuff is, shows unhealed trauma. Non of us accept this treatment, because I won't ever want my child to believe that I am not able to handle their big emotions and guide them through it healthy. Because it's my job to do so as a parent. Learn myself to regulate and regulate my child. And not breaking trust and making them used to ab5se, if it serves the person they love (me, or future partner or whoever). Nope. If my child accept physical ab9se from me, then I know I did something severely wrong in my parenting, because that child will not trust me in traumatic stressful events and will not tell me and will think that that's part of love. But it's not. If you teach your kid to accept your ab6se, the person they love most, you teach them to accept it from everyone else too. Except if they go through their biggest heartbreak and stop loving you.

Nah it was definitely the slap. That knocked her head to the side. More than once. The second slap where she apologized and stopped backtalking was more than enough. Her mom should have stopped it there because the third slap was an overstep and if we're being fair miss "you had it coming" should have been slapped too because if that lady is concerned with polite and acceptable behavior enough to slap someone else's child she is more than conscious of how inappropriate running your mouth candidly and taunting others is. Also that isnt a proven point she did not apologize for her behavior she begged her mother to call an attack dog off.

This stood me in good stead in a 30y Childcare career & I passionately advocated healthy communication over corporeal punishment. However in the last five years I met many a child AND a parent who wanted a bloody good smack & the riot act read. The parents usually had/are parents who want their kids to be their friends. Big mistake. Be a friendly parent but an adult mentoring someone else to become an adult.

Child rearing is an art we forever are learning and perfecting. 7 kids and foster kids and I'm still learning. I know this and that's kids need the lines drawn and be made clear, and they need consequences that are equal to and greater when it's out and out defiance after the first two are met. The WORSE thing to do is give a free pass, do that and they become societies problem and society ain't gonna be so nice about it. I hope you the best and achieve balance in your understanding. Maybe I'll have it figured out perfectly after a dozen more grankids.
