Elton John: Daniel (Piano Cover + Mellotron Plugin)

I covered this before once or twice, but thought it might be interesting to add the Mellotron flute layer using the SampleTron2 Plugin by IK Multimedia. Purchased this some time ago but never got around to using. For the solo, according to my research an ARP2500 was used. I don't have an ARP2500 or any plugins for an ARP2500. I do have a couple of ARP2600 plugins (Cherry Audio and Arturia) however I could not find a suitable sound even after tweaking. In the end I settled for a Mini Moog (Model D) sound, and again I have several of these plugins however the best sounding preset came from "the Legend" by Synapse-Audio.
Track 1: Nord Piano 4 (White Grand Piano)
Track 2: Electric Piano - Logic Pro (up 1 x Octave)
Track 3: Sampletron2 (IK Multimedia Mellotron)
Track 4: Synapse Audio The Legend (Don't have an ARP2500 Plugin, and the Moog sounded better for this).

Jackson, I just wanted to pass along a special thank you for your excellent work on ALL of your many covers. I have listened to your music for years, but today I went through the entire list of songs that you have posted over the last several years and I was amazed how well you play. I have always been wanted to play like that! Again, I really appreciate all you have done and continue to do for us. You are among the best piano musicians I’ve ever heard!! Take care, Jerry

just excellent, as always.....trying to figure out how you brought in the mellotron and some other sounds in the higher register, did you have a split going on there, or were the other sound velocity sensitive?

Thank you! So with the piano covers I do, I plan on doing a bit of a tutorial on how I do it all (if it interests anyone ?). In a nutshell I generally add addition instruments before or after I do the piano part it all depends on how things pan out, but it also depends on how I start the project file. For me it’s not a matter of just sitting and recording and filming I do some basic house keeping stuff on the computer first using Logic Pro. This includes importing a guide track (mp3 of the song to play along with) , setting time signature etc. I can then use this guide track as a template to plan out other instruments. In this instance I actually recorded the mellotron parts before I did the piano and the synth. So these were seperate tracks that were merged with the final piano recording I did. I filmed/played the piano part last, but had the mellotron and synth tracks muted so I didn’t get distracted. After I recorded the piano part I the unmuted the other parts and put them together as one track . I hope that’s somewhat helpful and it has been on the todo list for a long time to explain this using a video tutorial as I had to learn all this myself and even then, there may be a better way !

Nice job Jackson! 👏 I was just listening to the song "Only the Lonely" by The Motels. Have you heard it? (80's) I'm sure you get q million requests but it's one that might make a great piano cover. Cheers!
