That's Micky Thomas singing. He was Elvin's backup singer and after Elvin wrote this he realized he couldn't do the song justice, so he had Micky sing it. And then the next thing you know Jefferson Starship hires him as their new lead singer because Grace Slick was wasted so often they couldn't count on her any more, and he sounded quite a bit like her. The song "Jane" by Jefferson Starship was one of my faves. Then Grace got clean and they ended up singing a lot of stuff together, including some pretty irritating 80's fluff like "We Built This City" and others.

Fun story: I was browsing your videos with my dad (70) when he was visiting a few days ago. He saw this song and said, “hey that’s my college roommate - let’s watch that one”. His roommate in college was Mickey Thomas, who sang lead on this track. Eventually Mickey joined Jefferson Airplane and sang/wrote big hits for them as Jefferson Starship/Starship, but I never knew he sang this tune. My dad saw him play a few months ago and got to go backstage and the two caught up for a while and had some laughs...it had been nearly 50 years since they had hung out.. edit - my dad said he can still hit all those notes at 70

The story behind this is Mickey Thomas was in the same studio recording, and Elvin Bishop was playing this but just could not get the vocal down. Mickey heard it down the hall and popped in and asked Elvin if he could give it a shot. He did and nailed it perfectly. It took off and it showcased Mickey's voice and Elvin's guitar together even today they both still play together..

Looks like this is from The Midnight Special. Artists on TV typically lip sync to the recordings. But on that show, nearly all performances were live.

When you got on "The Midnight Special" you turned it up to 11. Such great performances. Brings back memories of my childhood seeing these bands for the first time away from the radio. The clothes are the best and still look normal to me. That's how we dressed. And we LIKED it! You could do a Midnight Special Special where you react to the show through the years. There's lots of material to work with there. Thanks for these reactions. They always make me smile. Peace

Also enjoyed your reaction of Morgan on this one! The original will always be my fav but Morgan is a very close second. Keep on Rockin Jamel, love the channel!!!

What an awesome set of pipes Mickey had in his prime. Beautiful, strong and clear , effortless vocals. One of the best of his generation and one of the best in pop history. PS- - I grew up in this era. Hated those jump suits then and still do. Tommy Shaw used to wear one on stage as well.

You're the second guy I saw review and respond to this performance. 💜 Glad you all love it as much as I do. Can't get enough, NEVER grows old. 🌿 Most of us did not realize all these years that it was Mickey Thomas singing those lyrics (a background singer) and Elvin Bishop is on guitar here (singer-songwriter, guitarist). Seems like in the big picture Mickey did not get the recognition and I bet he didn't get the paycheck either (royalties ++) that is besides his pay as a backup singer. Glad he's finally getting his due now. You're so right, he can S. A. N. G.!
