"It's called Goodbye Cruel World and I think it's the best album we've ever made." LOL FOR DAYS

EC on Goodbye Cruel World in 1984 (00:43): "I think it's the best record we've ever made." EC in the liner notes of the 1995 reissue: "Congratulations! You've just purchased our worst album."

When Goodbye Cruel World was released, I remember being disappointed but have grown to really, really like it in the ensuing decades. A quite good album.

He mentioned Jerry Dammers of The Specials. Cheers, Elvis!

Elvis would come to hate Goodbye Cruel World, mostly because of the trendy production and instrumentation. He did a solo tour around this time and the songs he played from that recording sounded great with just his voice and an acoustic guitar.

I was at both the gigs in 1984 - solo and with the attractions promoting Goodbye Cruel World. Will never forget them opening with Deportees Club at the Edinburgh Playhouse. Serious electricity!

He's just as snarky IRL as his lyricism

Is nobody going to talk about how he randomly has a puppet? And the fact that he keeps playing with it the whole time, like he brought it just to amuse himself?

I played GCW the other day- both CDs from the old deluxe issue - and struggled for the most part. Three or four very good songs but a lot more filler than what I had been accustomed to with EC. Still got my 12” of I Want To Be Loved.

so surprised to hear Elvis praising Goodbye Cruel World which I thought he despised as their worst. Maybe he was trying to sell records, or maybe he grew to hate GCW eventually. I personally think it's a fun record even though it's way poppy.

"The best album we've made". There you have it, kids: always take what musicians say with a pinch of salt.

I recently made a list ranking all of EC’s LPs. Goodbye Cruel World ranked last. Behind even North.

I ranked Punch the Clock quite high.

My understanding was that he didn't want to release the finished record, but had to because he was facing bankruptcy. It's nice to hear him saying he likes it, it's got some really good material on it and is a lot better than Punch the Clock, for my money anyway.

It is better than Punch The Clock. Good call!

Elvis was blatantly lying about the Goodbye Cruel World album being the "the best album we've ever made". It's the WORST album he ever made with perhaps the exception of North.
