This Elvis Presley video starts with the King first appearing on The Ed Sullivan Show from Los Angeles (introduced by Charles Laughton). Presley eventually made three appearances on the "Ed Sullivan Show" (September 9, 1956, October 28, 1956, and January 6, 1967) and the half-dozen of his performances are shown here.
Of course, everything is in black & white. Still, the historical value here is watching Elvis trying to keep his pelvis from gyrating too much and Sullivan having a good word to say about the lad as he heads off to military service. Remember, that Elvis was one of the few legendary performers NOT to make his television debut on "Ed Sullivan" (he actually appeared first on Tommy and Jimmy Dorsey's "Stage Show").
It was his energetic rendition of “Hound Dog” on The Milton Berle Show that first incited the uproar. From that moment on, everyone was either hot with Elvis fever or sick with fear of the “youth-corrupting” musician. The more parents and concerned citizens urged against the rocker, the more teens wanted him. Television stations had to make a choice. They could either give the disproportionately-sized teen demographic their star and risk the backlash, or appease parents and lose the ratings.
A compromise was reached. Elvis could appear on television, but it was demanded he be shot from the waist up only. In 1957, Elvis made his final of three agreed-upon appearances for The Ed Sullivan Show. While Elvis’ first two appearances, each scheduled a month or so apart, showed the rocker head-to-toe, his final performance was broadcasted without a pelvis in sight.
Before the iconic host struck a three-show deal with Elvis, Sullivan was weary to book the rocker, wanting desperately to avoid the criticisms that came with playing host to such provocative performances. But he couldn’t deny the skyrocketing ratings other shows received when they welcomed the star.
Upon the conclusion of Elvis' last performance, Ed genuinely complimented the singer saying, “I wanted to say to Elvis Presley and the country that this is a real decent, fine boy, and wherever you go, Elvis, we want to say we've never had a pleasanter experience on our show with a big name than we've had with you.

Devine is Eight for sure! It took The Creator to make that man! He had everything you'd want in a man! He was Gorgeous, had a voice that could sing anything and it always sounded better than the original! He would smile and light up any soul around him! He had an infectious laugh, that would lift your spirits! I could go on and on about him! But I'd be exhausted! There Was only One Elvis, and there will never be another! We miss him dearly, but if we follow his KING!✝️ , we'll see him again!

Yes, he did have command or “power” over audiences. I saw him in April, 1977. I told my friends I went with that I want to hear the man sing. Sometime during the concert, I was standing in my chair. Lol; it’s really a blur after 2001 Space Odyssey began. He passed in August, 1977. I was lucky to get to attend that concert.

UNBELIEVABLE!! Elvis could pick his nose and they would tear their hair out by the roots. Before his Television appearances he was just a regional phenomenon. The Ed Sullivan show made him a COMPLETE PHENOMENON. PERIOD!! Perhaps the craziest thing I'd heard about his fame was in the Jerry Hopkins bio Elvis. In one High School in Texas, crazed fans carved his name into their arms with pocket knives!! There is no way to fully understand how Elvis Presley transcended American Pop Culture. It happened and it never waned. Like a storm that wont subside.

Elvis was incredibly brilliant in every way. A natural talent and so totally original. As many have said, he had it all - that wonderful voice that he could use so well to sing any style of music and with such sincere feeling, and of course his amazing good looks. I'm a straight guy and think that he was so handsome, so heaven knows what he did to the girls and ladies! Elvis was a master at making fantastic recordings and I especially like the Sun and early RCA records. We, today, are so fortunate to have people putting these wonderful videos on KZfaq and I say thankyou to them.- especially as I'm from England where Elvis never performed. I did on one visit to the Country Music Museum in Nashville see some brief videos of these early TV appearances, but now, thanks to KZfaq and these great video makers we can all, where ever we are, enjoy them. These early black and white TV performances show just what a pure natural, genuine and incredible talent Elvis had. Of course we must also remember the musicians who contributed greatly to the appeal and success of Elvis's records I bought my first record - All Shook Up - aged 16 in 1956, and ever since then I have always thought that Scotty Moore's marvellous guitar playing was and is - besides Elvis himself - what made those records and performances so absolutely brilliant. Very best wishes to all, William Prince.

I know the intention was to NOT repeat songs, CAL VID, but NEVERTHELESS your having no space to include "Love me tender", a 3 XPlatinum RIAA awarded record, which was #1 for 5 weeks, and which was sang on all three shows, nor "Love me" which was sang on the second show and went up to #2 in the singles chart in spite of never being a single, but the lead song of an EP, was a strange decision. For those who doesnt know, Elvis Presley attracted all of 235 million cumulative viewers in the 11 month period from late January of 1956 to early January of 1957. .There were 6,000,000 in each of the 6 Dorsey Shows at CBS, that is 36,000,000, then 18,000,000 and 22,000,000 in the two Berle Shows at NBC, that's another 40,000,000 then 42,000,000 for his only appearance at Allen's show, that was the first in prime time, on a Sunday, at 8pm, the top rating slot, also at NBC, and finally 60.710,000 , 56.450,000 , and 54.600,000 at the three Sullivan Shows, all three prime time, Sunday at 8pm, all top rating slots at CBS. No one in the history of television has been PURPOSEDLY seen by as many viewers in prime time, ONE PERSON ALONE, in such a short period of time, not even the Beatles, which garnered 180,000,000 viewers in their 3 Sullivan appearances in 1964 and 25,'000,000 at another non Sullivan appearance, which was not in prime time, and that was in November of 1964. Kudos for the effort CAL VID, really, the quality is fantastic, but again, "Love me tender" from the second Sullivan show could have been included. As to my insistance with "Love me tender", this is why. It FACTUALLY saved a life, that of Diane Pichler. His telex to her was sent at 4.27 am., read by her at 8am, then she heard the songs starting at 8.10 pm . Diane was a then 13-year-old girl dying of cancer and weighing only 42 pounds with a prognosis so bleak that, as a Roman Catholic, she had already received her last rites. She underwent 16 further operations and survived Elvis., her mother claiming it was seeing and hearing Elvis sing "Love me tender" for her and the 56.450,000 who were watching as well, that made her WANT to live. That is an important point, which should never be forgotten. scontent.fmga3-2.fna.fbcdn.net/v/t1.6435-9/71394853_3064838490224076_1891754848450248704_n.jpg?_nc_cat=111&ccb=1-7&_nc_sid=cdbe9c&_nc_ohc=VYXpfzp-rF8AX8BtcrZ&_nc_ht=scontent.fmga3-2.fna&oh=00_AfA10dTyzY-OHQTZvPPJBrosb7wbsB8itKwb7jAUgK_afA&oe=64AFFFB8
