In the Ghetto live and Bridge Over Troubled Water are wonderful songs. He’s a very emotive singer & his Gospel music will bring one to tears. This song was done for MLK & Bobby Kennedy’s assassinations in 1968. He didn’t like spouting his political views but could sing his emotions & so it was written for him to express how upset he was.

As others have commented,' If I Can Dream' is his MLK tribute performance - Elvis was devastated by MLK's murder. People tried to stop him from performing the song because it was too 'controversial'. But he went ahead & PASSIONATELY performed it on his special just months after MLK's murder......rumour he broke down in tears after he sang it.😭 Elvis himself was part Native American - he didn't see colour, he saw people. He grew up in poverty, in a shack, dirt poor - he & his Mother depended on others for food. He grew up playing with all different races but mainly in the black community - he loved to go to the local church and sing gospel with the choir. A true Gentleman who never forgot his roots, but humble and so kind as a result. PS Just subscribed Miss Emily!☘️ from Ireland💚

"If I Can Dream" is a song made famous by Elvis Presley, written by Walter Earl Brown and notable for its direct quotations of Martin Luther King Jr.'s 1963 "I Have a Dream" speech. The song was published by Elvis Presley's music publishing company Gladys Music, Inc. It was recorded by Presley in June 1968, just two months after King's assassination. The recording was first released to the public as the finale of Presley's '68 Comeback Special. Brown was asked to write a song to replace "I'll Be Home for Christmas" as the grand finale on NBC's "Elvis", from June 20-23, 1968 (now also known as ‘68 Comeback Special). Knowing about Presley’s fondness for Martin Luther King Jr., and about his devastation related to his then-recent assassination, he wrote "If I Can Dream" with Presley in mind. After Presley heard the demo, he proclaimed "I'm never going to sing another song I don't believe in. I'm never going to make another movie I don't believe in." And he, in his nine years remaining, kept his promise. The song was published by Presley's company Gladys Music, Inc. After Colonel Tom Parker heard the demo of the song sent by Earl Brown, he said: "This ain't Elvis' kind of song." Elvis was also there, and he countered Parker’s argument, then he pleaded: "Let me give it a shot, man." Earl Brown said while Elvis recorded the song, he saw tears rolling down the cheeks of the backing vocalists. One of them whispered to him: "Elvis never sung with so much emotion. Looks like he means every word."

Elvis wasn't fond of MLK . Elvis was not involved or interested in social / political causes. . And this song was not written as a tribute to Marty? You're an ass.

@@shanenolan8252Robert Kennedy's assassination also impacted Elvis' decision to do this type of song instead of "I'll Be Home For Christmas" to end his comeback special, but the main inspiration for the lyrics came from Martin L. King Jr.'s "I Have A Dream" speech. I just took the information that was on Wikipedia for this song , and put it on here This article backs up both what you and I are saying... theconversation.com/if-i-can-dream-the-elvis-tribute-to-martin-luther-king-jr-87845

@@panteraxenos4789 You are wrong, Elvis was very interested in what was happening in America, but he chose to keep his views private most of the time. He did however donate money to causes he believed in and sometimes he did songs that echoed how he felt like "In The Ghetto" and "If I Can Dream, which is definitely dedicated to both MLK and Bobby Kennedy's assassinations. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/Zt9-bK2Dqr2aeJc.html

@@panteraxenos4789 Marty ? Seriously you a close friend ? Martin MLK or doctor king is how somone not an ass refers to him , elvis didn't write the song but the man who did said that it was inspired by both assassinations of mlk and RFK that summer, and he was a civil rights leader not a social justice activist, they are different things , and you don't know what he thought about him , but even if he had criticism , so what nobody's perfect, elvis or mlk, doesn't mean he was happy he was murdered does it . and mlk was no saint was he ? Beware of calling others and ass and being factually inaccurate it makes you look like an ass . He could break through to just about every human being and that's what made him truly different. He could make you rethink and reshape your basic beliefs and prejudices. That's incredible power and he comes off as real and honest and he really was that G. If he were alive today it would be a much better world, but if he wasn't born, I trust that we would be living in a much harsher world. All we can do is react to what we have and carry the torch of peace and love as the legendary Memphis cat is talking about here. Let's get to that candle together!

There are a couple of other good performaces Elvis Presley did on "The '68 Comeback Special". There was a segment of the special,, when Presley has a reunion with his original band members, and they perform some songs together. Two of them that I would like to see you react to, are for the songs, "Are You Lonesome Tonight?" and his cover of the Jimmy Reed Blues song, "Baby, What Do You Want Me To Do?".
