YES! GREAT VERSION! Though I like Tina Turner's version very much I do think I prefer Elvis's version over hers. Too I also think my personal favorite live version of Elvis doing "Proud Mary" is the February 16, 1970 one (I forget if it is the Dinner Show or Midnight Show). Also: The last time Elvis would perform "Proud Mary" would be in August 1974 in Las Vegas. Though I have not yet listened to it, there is a live 1971 version Elvis did that's supposed to be even more of a rocker than any other version he did. That is according to one article I read anyway. Alright so: Song Info: John Fogery of Credence Clearwater Revival wrote this song. So the song is actually about a guy who left "a good job in the city" to re- invent himself and he titled the song after a real ship that was docked in Memphis, Tennessee "Mary Elizabeth". So I really love that Elvis chose to do this song because it ties in with his own life story- in way. John Fogerty wrote "Proud Mary" two days after he left The National Guard. So it could be interpreted as a guy who left a weekly salary job in the city to pursue his true passion, that being music- and knowing he's taking a risk doing that. I think that's part of the reason why Elvis did choose to include "Proud Mary" in his live set. So according to Wiki: "Proud Mary" is a song by American rock band Creedence Clearwater Revival, written by vocalist and lead guitarist John Fogerty. It was released as a single in January 1969 by Fantasy Records and on the band's second studio album, Bayou Country. The song became a major hit in the United States, peaking at No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 in March 1969, the first of five singles to peak at No. 2 for the group. Later that year, R&B singer Solomon Burke released a rendition on Bell Records that reached No. 15 on the Billboard R&B chart. Another version by R&B duo Ike & Tina Turner, released on Liberty Records in 1971, did nearly as well as the original on the charts, reaching No. 4 on the Billboard Hot 100 and No 5 on the Billboard R&B chart. They won a Grammy Award for their rendition in 1972. In a 1969 interview, Fogerty said that he wrote it in the two days after he was discharged from the National Guard. In the liner notes for the 2008 expanded reissue of Bayou Country, Joel Selvin explained that the songs for the album started when Fogerty was in the National Guard, that the riffs for "Proud Mary", "Born on the Bayou", and "Keep on Chooglin'" were conceived by Fogerty at a concert in the Avalon Ballroom, and "Proud Mary" was arranged from parts of different songs, one of which was about a washerwoman named Mary. The line "Left a good job in the city" was written following Fogerty's discharge from the National Guard, and the line "rollin' on the river" was from a movie by Will Rogers. The Proud Mary, more formally known as the Mary Elizabeth, was a real ship and was based in Memphis, Tennessee. The Proud Mary traveled along the Mississippi River from 1928 to 1978. "Proud Mary's" singer, a low-wage earner, leaves what he considers a "good job," which he might define as steady work, even though for long hours under a dictatorial boss. He decides to follow his impulse and imagination and hitches a ride on a riverboat queen, bidding farewell to the city. Only when the boat pulls out does he see the "good side of the city"-which, for him, is one in the distance, far removed from his life. Down by the river and on the boat, the singer finds protection from "the man" and salvation from his working-class pains in the nurturing spirit and generosity of simple people who "are happy to give" even "if you have no money." The river in Fogerty and traditionally in literature and song is a place holding biblical and epical implications. ... Indeed, the river in "Proud Mary" offers not only escape but also rebirth to the singer. The song is a "seamless mix of black and white roots music." Fogerty explained that he liked Beethoven's Fifth Symphony and wanted to open a song with a similar intro (descending by a third), implying the way "Proud Mary" opens with the repeated C chord to A chord. Fogerty wanted to evoke male gospel harmonies, as exemplified by groups he was familiar with such as the Swan Silvertones, the Sensational Nightingales, and the Five Blind Boys of Mississippi; especially on the line, "Rollin', rollin', rollin' on the river"; and in the guitar solo he did his "best [imitation of] Steve Cropper." The basic track for "Proud Mary", as with the other songs on the album, was recorded by John Fogerty (lead guitar), Tom Fogerty (rhythm guitar), Stu Cook (bass), and Doug Clifford (drums) at RCA Studios in Hollywood, California, with John overdubbing instruments and all the vocals later. Billboard described "Proud Mary" as a "driving blues item with a strong beat." Cash Box described it as "a steady moving mid-speed chunk of funk and rhythm that will make itself felt in both pop and underground spots." Cash Box ranked it as the No. 55 single of 1969. In 1969, Anthony Armstrong Jones released a version of "Proud Mary" that reached No. 22 on the Billboard Hot Country Singles chart. The song served as the title track of his debut album. In 1970, the song was recorded by Leonard Nimoy, in his album The New World of Leonard Nimoy. In 1972, Brush Arbor released a version of "Proud Mary" that reached No. 56 on the Billboard Hot Country Singles chart. Elvis Presley began incorporating "Proud Mary" into his live shows in 1970. Presley's version is a full-out rocker and is featured in his 1972 concert film Elvis on Tour, and on his live albums On Stage (1970) and As Recorded at Madison Square Garden (1972). Neil Sedaka performed a live version of "Proud Mary" at a concert he gave in Sydney, Australia in 1971. The 2011 soundtrack to Bringing Up Bobby, an American comedy drama film, contained a Ukrainian language version of Proud Mary, performed by actress Milla Jovovich. Amanda Ayala performed a rendition of "Proud Mary" in 2019 on Topgolf TV's "Who Will Rock You?" The performance was subsequently released exclusively on Spotify. Prince performed a sample of "Proud Mary" during his 2007 Super Bowl Halftime Show performance. The Longest Johns performed a studio version of the song on their 2024 album Voyage. John Fogerty info (short): John Cameron Fogerty (born May 28, 1945) is an American singer, songwriter and guitarist. Together with Doug Clifford, Stu Cook, and his brother Tom Fogerty, he founded the swamp rock band Creedence Clearwater Revival (CCR), for which he was the lead singer, lead guitarist, and principal songwriter. CCR had nine top-10 singles and eight gold albums between 1968 and 1972, and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1993. Credence Clearwater Revival info (short): Creedence Clearwater Revival, commonly abbreviated as CCR or simply Creedence, was an American rock band formed in El Cerrito, California. The band consisted of lead vocalist, lead guitarist, and primary songwriter John Fogerty, his brother, rhythm guitarist Tom Fogerty, bassist Stu Cook, and drummer Doug Clifford. These members had played together since 1959, first as the Blue Velvets and later as the Golliwogs, before settling on Creedence Clearwater Revival in 1967. The band's most prolific and successful period between 1969 and 1971 produced fourteen consecutive Top 10 singles (many of which were double A-sides) and five consecutive Top 10 albums in the United States - two of which, Green River (1969) and Cosmo's Factory (1970), reached number one. The band performed at the 1969 Woodstock festival in Upstate New York, and was the first major act signed to appear there. You certainly do provide an awful lot of background and it's appreciated! I knew this was originally a CCR song and I knew the famous version by Tina Turner. I also heard Elvis performing it, because of listening to some of his live albums. All that to say, that was the extent of my knowledge-until now. Oh and regarding Dylan, I don't think you'd find very many people who would disagree with you. He has an awful voice 😂

@@nycsue George Harrison and David Bowie saw the every first concert at Madison square gardens . Just look it up on KZfaq mate, You're also correct all the Beatles wanted Elvis to be stuck in a time capsule. Not moving with the times, as they saw Elvis as a major hurdle to them becoming famous. That's why they were over the moon, that Elvis continued his terrible movies until 1968. But once they saw the 1968 come back special ( formally known as singer presents Elvis. @@nycsue The Beatles broke up in April 1970. George Harrison became bitter about how Lennon & McCarthy prioritized the songs they co- authored over songs he had written to record. Too many there is some belief in certain circles (depending on who it is you talk to) that Lennon's new wife Yoko Ono was part of the reason The Beatles broke up. As a matter of fact though, even after the official break up, Lennon & McCartney did still work together. As a matter of fact, in February 1970 the Beatles had a record label called Apple. It was on that record label that they signed on Jackie Lomax, the first guy to cut "How The Web Was Woven". What's unique about Jackie Lomax's first record was that every Beatle had a hand in its production. I'll get all that later when Seph does a reaction to Elvis's version of "How The Web Was Woven". Anyways Apple Ltd. is still in exiatence. As of 2007 management was taken over by Jeff Jones. Up until 1973 it was The Beatles's former manager Allan Klein who was manager of their record label. Also: If you want to learn about a real life rock 'n' roll love triangle look up Patty Boyd. George Harrison & Eric Clapton were both a- holes to her. I had no idea until a few weeks ago. I was a fan of Eric Clapton but I had no idea he was SUCH an a- hole to be honest. It's a really messed up true story. And George Harrison was just as much of an a- hole to Patty Boyd who was his wife let me add. Some find the story interesting. I just found it sad. I'm so glad Patty Boyd moved on from all that and is now living out her happily ever after. Sorry for digressing there. So in effort to try to answer your question: Elvis was his idol. He wanted Elvis to still be the Elvis of the 1950's. It was okay for George Harrison to want to grow and evolve as an artist but it wasn't okay for his idol to want to do the same. My humble opinion only. Also: Did you know that when Elvis was living at his home on Hillcrest Drive he was neighbors with BOTH Marilyn Monroe & Ringo? Overlapping times not at precisely at the same time but yeah. Elvis's property was above Marilyn's property and he had a partial view of Marilyn's backyard/ pool area. That was the house too where President John F. Kennedy would sometimes visit Marilyn. Hollywood & rock 'n' roll... The stories sometimes seem like they straight out of a fiction novel. Or a movie script 😉

@@sammy_the_uncool2702 Thank you for your detailed information on the Beatles, yes I knew about the record company Apple. About Elvis living near one of the Beatles, look it's just that it seemed like the Beatles wanted Elvis to be frozen in time? I read somewhere that Harrison was blown away by Elvis singing his song something unsure how true it is? John Lennon was supposed to be really angry and jealous of the fact Elvis covered Harrison song something? Even though Elvis did his version of Yesterday and other Beatles material. I of course could be just going off hearsay and there could be no truth to it? I know John Lennon was asked for his reaction to when Elvis died on August 16th 1977. John Lennon said he died when he went into the army, but if you saw John Lennon when he was told Elvis died , you could see he was very upset.

It is called "Prince from another planet" a title taken from a journalist who wrote an article about one of the shows and used this as a headline. Firstly thanks for the shiut out pal - much appreciated. Feel free to use as much from the channel as 'you see fit - thats what it's there for - and great reaction as per usual. A song that Elvis never recorded in the studio, the live RCA master was captured during his dinner show on 16 February 1970, by which time the arrangement had become a bit more polished. The song became an integral part of his set list throughout 1971 and 1972, increasing in tempo and havibg a further verse included. Changing from each engagement or tour, the song was ealways the second or third song on the set list throiughout these two years.
