Swing Low, Sweet Chariot is a negro spiritual type song from the United States. Swing Low, Sweet Chariot was composed before 1862 by Wallace Willis, a freed former Choctaw Indian slave living in the former Indian territories. He was inspired by the Red River (Mississippi), which reminded him of the Jordan, and the prophet Elijah who is said to have reached paradise in a chariot. It was at this time that Alexander Reid, a pastor at a school in Choctaw territory, heard Willis' song sung and transcribed the words and melody. He sent her to the Fisk Jubilee Singers (a group of black-American singers from the 1870s) at Fisk University in Nashville, Tennessee. The Fisk Jubilee Singers made this song popular during their tour of the United States and Europe. The oldest known recording of this song, by the Fisk Jubilee Singers, dates from 1909. Later, other artists would cover this song, sometimes adapting it, including Elvis Presley, Eric Clapton and Joan Baez. The pianist you hear is Floyd Cramer. If you feel like it you can watch Elvis sing this song in his film The Trouble With Girls. Thank you for your culture and sweet reactions.

Same. Not religious at all, but I’ll be damned if I don’t tear up every time I hear him sing it.

I don't know if Elvis was playing tge piano on this song, but I learned he could play classical music. His favorite piece was Beethoven's "Moonlight Sonata." This is told by Steve Binder in his new release '68 COMEBACK THE STORY BEHIND THE SPECIAL. Don't think most people knew how accomplished a musician this man was. Thank you for your input on the song. Elvis actually sang this song in one of his movies, "The Trouble With Girls". I love to watch him sing it. Cute movie.

Black spiritual. I liked the young El is, but loved the deeper Elvis too. In honor of his birthday and the anniversary of Daughter Lisa's death on the 10th would you please do their duet called "Where No One Stand Alone" she sang this and produced this in 2019. Thanks so much.

There's another great up-tempo gospel track from Elvis - off his second gospel album HOW GREAT THOU ART - called "If The Lord Wasn't Walking By My Side". It's quite short, only 2 minutes or so, but it's groove is so infectious it's a must listen. And as I've mentioned earlier, his live performance of "How Great Thou Art" from 1972 is one for the ages.

I love your reactions !😊 I have been an Elvis fan my whole life ,and it is such a joy to watch you react and comment . You are so genuinely interested and it’s plain as day that you’re enjoy listening to the music . And you are as taken in as we are .🥰 You’re right ,Elvis has such a big legacy of a treasure chest With beautiful songs in it ,yet to be discovered by you . 😍 Regarding that ,I have to mention ,that the song does not go With that album. The album shown has many great songs on there . But ”Swing down low sweet chariot is from another religious album ,I think it is ”He touched me”, which is also a song on that album. Lovely😍 Regarding the piano playing, Elvis could play piano too ,(please react to the interview With childhood friend Sam BellI Where he talks about that ) ,but I am pretty sure it was Floyd Cramer who was on many of the early recordings. Later on it was Glenn Hardin .

I think you're talking about Jerry Reed. Tom Parker demanded songwriters sign over one third (and later on, half) their publishing rights in order for Elvis to record their songs. (From what I've read on the subject, that was pretty common then and now - there's been a controversy going on the last few years, with songwriters saying, "No more.") According to Jerry Reed, EP wanted to record his song 'Guitar Man', but they couldn't get the guitar sound right (because no one plays guitar like Jerry Reed). So they hunted down Jerry Reed, who was on the water fishing, and he came to the studio and played guitar on the track. As he was leaving, Parker presented him with the paperwork signing over half the publishing rights. Jerry Reed said no. Parker said then Elvis wouldn't be doing the song. Jerry Reed said, "You look at Elvis over there," (who was happy and excited) "and you tell him he can't have the song," and walked out. Elvis did the song and Jerry Reed retained the publishing rights. I love Jerry Reed, and that's one of my favorite JR stories. 😊

He’s just telling stories from the Bible. Ezekiel had a vision of Gods Chariot Throne which is an amazing description if you read the book of Ezekiel. But there’s also the story of Elijah and Elisha who were traveling down the road together and a chariot of fire drawn by horses of fire were sent down from God and the Elijah was taken up in a whirlwind to Heaven without dying. ❤
