Elvis Presley - What Really Killed Him?
Warning: This video contains medical images and terminology.
Elvis Presley was the King of Rock and Roll - his music and attitude changed the world forever, but he was ruthlessly exploited by others to become a troubled, medication-addicted, bloated caricature of his former self and he died on the toilet, alone and without dignity at the age of 42.
So much has been written about his life and death that it is hard to make sense of it all. In this history of mental health documentary I will be focussing on his addiction to prescription drugs, the toll they took on his body, the doctors who fed his dependence and his final illness and death -critically evaluating the medical evidence to help you make up your own mind about what really killed Elvis Presley.
There are so many books on Elvis, it is hard to know where to start. Peter Guralnick’s two-volume biography provides the most detailed and authoritative account of his life. If you want more detail on his medical history Forrest Tennant’s book certainly provides this, although I do not agree with many of his conclusions. These are available through my Amazon Store: www.amazon.com/shop/professor...
Books:
Guralnick, P. (1994). Last train to Memphis: The Rise of Elvis Presley. Little, Brown.
Guralnick, P. (1999). Careless Love: The Unmaking of Elvis Presley. Back Bay Books.
Red West, Sonny West, and Dave Hebler as told to Steve Dunleavy (1977). Elvis: What
Happened? Bantam Books.
Tennant, F. (2021) The Strange Medical Saga of Elvis Presley. Tennant Foundation.

As Zeppelin said before, Elvis music was in black and white, like old t.v, after Elvis music was technicolor. Dylan said that without Elvis, there would be no Dylan. It is ashamed you discount the effect one single person had in pivoting music. He changed how it was performed, who could perform it, how it could be seen,the outfits and crazy hair that became acceptable, and broke segregation laws in the process! Just shame on you for not knowing music history, his part in it, and his effect on it before you call him a simple entertainer. As Pavarotti said, given Elvis"s 3 octave range, he would make a beautiful opra tenor if he had been trained at all. But, now, he does what he does, and Elvis does what he does. And I could NEVER do what Elvis does! In other words, Elvis was so good simply with his voice that he could be trained to be Pavarotti, but it could never be the other way around. Learn before you speak. And by the way, your title was misleading. It say ..what really killed Elvis. There was no ?at the end. You knew no more than than anyone else did. All you did was show the end of his life the way we try to forget. He was more than the last year of his life.

Elvis was found on the floor of his bathroom … to my knowledge, there is no evidence that he was ‘on the toilet’ when he died. You people need to stop saying he was ‘on the toilet’ … it’s not fair to him or his family to refer to his death that way. You all should be ashamed!

This is how I recall Elvis’s life. I remember how sad I was when I found out Elvis had died, I was heart broken. Later, I recall feeling so angry at him for taking drugs. This anger turned back into the joy I felt for this great entertainer, because Elvis had a way about him, that just melted your heart. Elvis will always stand out, as the greatest entertainer, a beautiful decent human being with a heart of gold who never forgot where he came from. Still, after all this time, miss you and can and will always remember the joy you brought into my life. Rest In Peace dear soul!

You'll be happy to know Elvis didn't die. He faked his death because the mob, black panthers & the weather underground put out a contract on his life. A triple threat, something he couldn't deal with. Why would they put out a contract on his life? Elvis was a DEA agent. I could go on forever about this but, you should check it out for yourself. You might have to pay for the interview if you try to see it on youtube but, it's free on the ROKU channel. There's NO DOUBT the person being interviewed in 2011 is Elvis. Is he still alive today I don`t know but, I think he is because the spelling on his grave hasn`t changed. When he dies, I think that will change. He`ll be 90 in January. The most fascinating story I`ve ever heard. The video is called, Elvis Found Alive.

I’ve read a few books on Elvis and recall him saying his greatest flaw was being self destructive, but that wasn’t all his own doing. He read countless books in his downtime and was a very learned person especially later in life, so it’s a shame things ended the way they did. The new movie does a good job of finally showing the codependency between him and his manager that prevented him from pursuing new challenges like classic movie roles and touring outside of the U.S.

No one could have "saved" Elvis. He had a strong family history of heart disease and substance abuse, both of which can be hereditary, and both of which contributed to his death. On top of that, he was arguably the most gifted and charismatic musical performer of all time, which came with a unique set of pressures that none of us can imagine. What really killed Elvis? I think it's reasonable to say that we as a society made a major, if unintended, contribution.

Elvis was a kind, loving and talented man. As Lisa Marie said none of us are perfect. One of the doctors at a nations top clinic where they tested Elvis's blood samples said it was the codeine in combination with depressants that where used to bring on sleep and surpress the central nervous system that caused Elvis's heart to stop. People of his inner circle said that Elvis had bad reactions to codeine in the past. Another doctor said that even if the medications hadn't of been in his system that Elvis still would have died. Either way we lost the best entertainer of all time and he is still loved and missed by millions of us the world over.

He was very immature. When you give the world to someone at 20 they do not grow up. They dont live in the real world. They live in a make believe world where you can have anything you wont. Moeny, cars, vacations, jewelry and sex with anyone you want. That will produce immaturity in anyone. Faith in the Lord in the Bible is defined by obedience. God calls out people that say they have faith but live a lifestyle of sin. Elvis was sexually immoral with hundreds of adulterous affairs. Thats not faith.

Years back I read a book written by Bernie Taupin, the guy who wrote the lyrics for all of the classic Elton John songs. Bernie and Elton were like brothers back in the day, they basically went everywhere together and did everything together and even though he was the behind the scenes lyricist of the two even toured with Elton back then. One of the tours they were on, might have actually been in 77 before Elvis died they had the chance to meet him, well of course they jumped on the chance to meet "The King", who in the music business wouldn't? All the biggest music stars over the years tripped over themselves to meet Elvis, The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, all of them. When they went and seen a show they got invited back stage, what they saw shocked them, here was this overweight guy who had all these hanger on yes men packing towels all over him to suck up all the sweat pouring out of him, black hair dye was running down his face mixed in with the sweat, and just as he rose to meet them he bent over and started stumbling around saying "I dropped my pill, does anyone see my pill". He said when they walked out of the place one of them looked at the other and said "He hasn't got long to live", they just knew he didn't. It wasn't long afterwards and he was dead, they were together when they heard the news and said to each other "Who didn't see that coming".

Additional health studies of Elvis and his mom have shown that they both suffered from alpha 1 antitrypsin deficiency which impacts lungs and liver. His swollen body was partly due to ascites from his liver dysfunction. Elvis also had toxic megacolon which explains his horrendous "constipation" issues. While his overuse of meds no doubt contributed to his early death, his health issues certainly had a tremendous impact.

There is no way he was anywhere near 350 lbs. and it's very very doubtful that he was anywhere near 230 lbs. even. All anyone needs to do is look at his last pictures and speak to those who actually was around him. Ginger said many times that he was NOT fat ! He had a blotted belly when he was backed up with chronic constipation. She said he was maybe 220-215 lbs at the very most but closer to 210-205. He looks like around maybe 210 lbs. for a 6 ft tall man in the Hawaii vacation pictures. Thin legs and arms, just a belly A bloated belly, not a blubber belly. At his very last concert he looks maybe 200 lbs. I personally am 6 ft tall and weighed 225 lbs. and have the same type of build that Elvis had. He was NEVER any bigger than I was at 225 lbs. as I can easily compare pictures. I work at a hospital and I can assure you that most doctors and mortician's don't take any pains to weigh the dead. A tiny man will over guess someone's weight. His medical records from when he joined the Army was around 180 lbs. He packed on maybe 35 more lbs. at his biggest. If he weighed 350 his arms, legs would be blubbery all over. He only had a blotted belly and that was NOT always. You can easily tell that his colon was twisted or out of sorts by the way his belly stuck out. That is all he had in way of extra weight. When he was able to get a proper crap out then he was a regular sized normal Elvis - around 200 lbs. Don't believe everything you read, just open your eyes and look. It's beyond obvious.
@ticcog

In fact look at the backstage videos with the other guys by him. Some of those guys are bigger than Elvis and they were not over 220 lbs. People like Joe. Joe's arms were much bigger than Elvis. His gut was also and he was a lot shorter than Elvis. Ed Parker was 210 lbs. and not as tall as Elvis, he was like 5'10. He was bigger than Elvis. Red West much bigger than Elvis. Sonny West bigger than Elvis. None of these guys were more than 220 lbs. Elvis was no where near 250 lbs. nor 240.The biggest that he ever got according to one of his band members was 230 and that was for a brief time in 1976.

Looking back It’s sad because We didn’t know the dangers of prescription drugs like we do now. So Elvis started with the uppers and the downers and as his tolerance built up he required more drugs. I think with that and Elvis overeating the combination slowly killed him losing his mom was a huge heartache but losing Priscilla and Lisa was too much I believe a year before Elvis died he begged Priscilla to come back I’m sure in Elvis’s mind he was searching for a reason to go on. After the divorce Elvis took more pills. He was getting older and lost everyone that he loved. Elvis’s life was bigger than he was and he couldn’t handle it. I wonder if the prescription drugs was not necessarily the things that killed him, his cholesterol, might have also played a part in his early demise. I remember seeing his cook on "Late Night With David Letterman" promoting her cook book and she fried up one of Elvis's favorites, a fried peanut butter and banana sandwich. She used a palm full of lard to coat the pan and then a stick of butter. She said Elvis would eat six of those sandwiches at a time, and other times he'd eat bacon. His cholesterol had to been through the roof. That southern cooking might have been a contributing factor.

I have always loved his music but I do think it’s also important not to romanticize his life. He had a family history of addiction, which means he was probably genetically susceptible to substance abuse. His talent and kindness as a person makes his death even sadder but shouldn’t be covered up - it’s a cautionary tale not a romantic one. Drugs of any kind, especially prescribed, can/will be addictive and harmful and will not enhance life. Being present in your own life without things to dull or numb pain is the only way to live fully. Not easy, but nothing worthwhile ever is.

I agree with you. I'm a medical professional and lifelong EP fan and over the years, I've thoroughly researched every aspect of his life. I see him as very human; not a god, not a king, but a supremely talented, deeply compassionate and caring man who lost his way. He deeply loved and cared for others but did not deeply love and care for himself. Elvis was very much a creature of habit who resisted change. He was in deep denial about his prescription drug use. In fairness, addiction medicine was in its infancy during the late '70s. Celebrities didn't openly/publicly discuss their health issues nor their addiction issues. Elvis was far too private and too proud to have ever openly discussed such topics as he thought doing so would have been a sign of weakness. He was somewhat fanatical about never appearing to be weak. Elvis was plagued with deep insecurity about his manhood. Some people don't believe this but it's absolutely true. In my view, Elvis's humanity was his most endearing quality, and it should be celebrated. He suffered from chronic, severe physical pain, poorly controlled type 2 diabetes, COPD, glaucoma, hepatitis, suspected/probable bipolar disorder, clinical depression, chronic insomnia, coronary artery disease, hypertension, rheumatoid arthritis, megacolon (and probable Hirschsprung's disease), among other ailments. Continuing to work while struggling with these serious conditions is certainly a testament to his strength of will. He was a seriously ill man. Dr Nick had called for a gastro consult by one of the leading gastroenterologists in the country at that time. The doctor recommended a colostomy, but Elvis refused. A colostomy may have saved his life but alas, it was not meant to be. At any rate, I will always love the man and his music. Rest in peace, Elvis Aaron Presley.

A very sad life indeed, as documented in this video, sure there were good times also, but being introduced to drugs in the army, is no great surprise (my son was in the UK army and was given stimulants to keep awake during nighttime guard duty) but my son was never addicted. Elvis for whatever reason got hooked on them, and I suspect took them in times of stressful situations, but I think on his divorce from Priscilla, he gave up on life and caring, and went on a self destruct, because around 4-5 years later he was dead. All very sad indeed, but what a life when it was great. 🎼🎶🎤👑

I don't think so, Yes he loved her till the end n wanted her back but I don't think that's what did it, he loved his mother much more than he loved Priscilla. It was Parker pushing him too far n Nick prescribing more than he should have, what Parker did on Elvis's funeral day was disgusting and Vernon allowed it, Elvis died of heartache from being used together with physical health problems and poor diet.

There are many reasons for the death of Elvis. The first reason is a heart disease that he inherited from his mother, which is coronary artery disease. The second reason is the grief over his mother's death, which stuck with him until 1977. It is a broken heart disease in psychology. The last reason is envy, which is a fatal disease. In the recent Elvis parties, we used to see his behavior abnormal and he seemed confused and had memory problems.Elvis' hypertrophy was not due to food and medication, but rather to problems with the heart muscle.His daughter's recent death was also due to heart problems, and his daughter died of a heart attack, the same death of her father, and her grandmother of elvis. I read a story told by Elvis's mother about strange things that happened when they were poor and lived in a modest house. They were seeing things related to the jinn. She also talked about the death of her relatives, one after the other. Even Elvis' twins died during childbirth. And also the grandson of Elvis recently committed suicide. All these events are not accidental.
@professorgraemeyorston

Indeed they are not - the factors that led to Elvis' death at the time it occurred are complex, but his diet, drug use and stress all contributed.

An alpha gene he inherited from his mother “why she died young to” and she inherited from her mother who inherited it from her father who had married his first cousin. When Elvis died the doc that did the autopsy said almost every one of Elvis’s organs were damaged by that alpha gene. Elvis took a lot of drugs because he has so many health problems including his lungs hence he retained a lot of fluid because his kidneys were failing just like his mother did. No one knew why they were all dying young until it was discovered in Elvis’s autopsy finally. I’m sure Pricilla knew after his autopsy and that’s why she feared Lisa would die young to and she did and her kids probably will to. It didn’t affect every family member but it did most of them. Read the book “ Elvis destined to die young”. The lady really did her homework! It’s not about Elvis’s fame but about his health and how hard he struggled to performed especially in his later years.

I've read this book and was fully persuaded by the CTCD & TBI explanation. He suffered from multiple system disorder and this is the only explanation linking all his complaints. He was often in agony and had recourse to drugs to alleviate his pain by which the medical profession at that time were baffled. The TBI can't be passed off simply as a bump on the head because he was out cold for some time afterwards and was confused and disorientated. This exacerbated his hereditary conditions ie CTCD and Alpha Antitrypsin Deficiency Disorder and his decline started around 1967. Joe Esposito told so many different stories I doubt that even he remembered which one was true! Priscilla equally has a vested interest in bringing in the dollars and her stories don't ring true either.
