Elvis is telling a story about a man who has nothing left after the love of his life left/died (I could never figure which). He starts out slowly and builds to the conclusion that "no one would care if I lived or died." He tells an entire narrative with one word at the end: "Nothing!" This is a song about a man contemplating suicide. An absolutely brilliant performance!

The origin of this song goes back to 1960; to Gilbert Bécaud, French singer who immortalized it under the French title """" Et maintenant """" as his other song ""Let it be me "" composed in 1955, by the same French singer Gilbert Bécaud! under the title """" Je t appartiens ""!! I had never believed it when my professor in college, both a musicologist and professional symphony musician, himself, told me that he viewed Elvis Presley to be the greatest overall singer of all time. "Why?," "What the hell?," so many of us said? With him first going on to ask what's Frank Sinatra's greatest and/or signature song? "My Way," someone eventually said and then the professor proceeded to show us various polls from over the years which listed Sinatra as the greatest singer ever. Ray Charles and Aretha Franklin were also on top of some, and Elvis, too, on a few. But the point of the exercise was to simply show us Sinatra was considered by many, though it's subjective, to be the greatest. The class then listened to Sinatra's "My Way," and then Elvis' version, back to back. With the room being roughly split as to whose version was better, "which proved what I thought?" But then the professor showed us Elvis rocking out to 'Trying to Get to You' from the Elvis 1968 Comeback Special. With the point ultimately being that regardless of whose version of 'My Way" you preferred, Elvis was right there, totally at home playing in Sinatra's backyard for lack of better parlance. But as to Sinatra playing in Elvis' backyard, he said, it couldn't be done, as he said "[i]magine Sinatra, (who he totally loved) trying to do that rock number?" Then going on to say that he had found no singer who had ever sang more genres, more majestically, than Elvis, & he challenged us to find out for ourselves by looking at his full catalogue of Rock, Pop, Soul, Country, Ballads, Gospel and more. And, when done, I admit I became a convert who was so, so doubtful, at first, I can't even begin to tell you. But from rocking out to 'Trying to Get to You' from that Elvis 1968 Comeback Special, to singing about the dream of humanity coming together with "If I Can Dream," from the same show, I believe you will see what I mean. Elvis even had a voice that could be operatic if you go and listen to 'Hurt' and his version of "You'll Never Walk Alone" will tell you why he has also sold more gospel records than anyone, as well as just tons more, overall. But, with pop and 'Such A Night' to a ballad such as 'They Remind Me Too Much of You,' he did it all, and so, so damn well. While for soul, check out 'Long Black Limousine' or 'You're Wearin' That Loved on Look' which is a bit of another number. Becausde as Elvis' one album cover says, there's 'Something for Everybody.' Also, and if ultimately you don't think Elvis is the best, that's totally cool as there really is something for everyone!;-) Great channel and I wish you the best!!! ~ Christopher Tyler P.S. Those recommendations are only, quite literally, the beginning!

My beloved ELVIS, is the most great star who walked the Earth. Unsurpassed, unequalled for centuries to come, God lent it to us for a few years, and took it back from us because he realized that he could not live on this planet, surrounded by "sharks" greedy for his money, his goodness, his kindness and his self-effacement! Almost 47 years after his cruel death, the world still mourns this man born in material misery and died in sickness, the misery of loneliness and malaise!! RIP with your darling daughter and your adored family, you deserve it so much/////

Not too sure whether you both liked this performance or not. It seems a sign of the times that as a generality listeners want slam bang thankyou ma'am from the start of a song. Anyway thanks for reacting to IMHO one of his greatest live ballad performances, no auto - tune etc. just pure all round talent.

Absolutely agree w-the "slam bang thankyou ma'am" comment. Things sure have changed & I guess you have to be older & go back aways to fully appreciate the music yrs. ago & how the singers had to truly have their own great talent because there was no auto-tuned or "messing" around w-"fixing" things up to make it sound good. Not to mention the amazing musical instruments which were normally used that we've lost -- the great saxophone, piano, flute, etc. Thanks.

That German Shepard sure can tell when greatness is about to happen. Dogs feel emotion and energies on a different level. Your initial emotional reaction to Elvis kicks of with the dog (walking away when it feels harmony is settled in). Extra great reaction because of that.

THAT RAMP from the STAGE: Producer/director Marty Pasetta told Parker he wanted to build a ramp for Elvis to walk out onto & Parker said no. Even though Pasetta explained that it would be 8 ft. wide & Elvis could stay in the middle or go to the left or to the right if he wanted to because Pasetta knew how important the audience was to Elvis, Parker stll said no. Fortunately, Pasetta was able to meet w-Elvis & he explained exactly what he told Parker. Fortunately again, Elvis overrode Parker & told Pasetta to build the ramp. Paseta told Elvis he wanted him to lose 25 lbs., which Elvis did. Elvis then hugged Pasetta & said you are one of the few people who has been totally honest w-me. Without that ramp the concert would have been very different if Elvis did not have the option to get in close touch w-the audience. There are 2 that are from '68 stand-up segment that are short enough so you could do one then follow it w-the other -- they total only 4 min. This particular version of "Blue Suede Shoes" from sitting to center stage w-a cute finish kzfaq.info/get/bejne/d9FlfqiTzp6ykZc.html (2:50 min.) & "Jailhouse Rock" (very different than the rehearsed choreographed film version) kzfaq.info/get/bejne/bp1-abSSlaqbe40.html (1:50 min.) - 2 rousing center stage performances w-Elvis doing what he did best. The water throwing incident rarely requested but a powerful, energetic & fun 1972 performance at Hampton Roads, Virginia -- should not be overlooked -- at the very, very start of the video Elvis called out “Please Release Me” but the band began playing “I Can’t Stop Loving You” - he didn’t stop them, he went right into the song, then walked over to his glass of water, picked it up & playfully threw it at Glen @ piano -- just make sure you hear him say Please Release Me, then then it will make sense; also note his little irritated look @ beginning -- kzfaq.info/get/bejne/grSkg5h4yZ61d3k.html.

@@InfectiousGroovePodcast Certainly! But I do have a suggestion regards the "water throwing incident" I suggested, if you ever play it: it's best if you didn't speak or stop because, due to this performance in particular, to appreciate the little things that went on, it really needs to run straight through silently. This is something I mention to everyone. Thx so much.

I think the song is great. If you listen to the lyrics, it’s a suicide song. Elvis puts his emotions into it as always… when a person is depressed and contemplating suicide, they’re not going to be hyped up. And then at the end … the “last goodbye” he ends the song with a bang. Brilliant.
