In the second episode of our eMac adventure, we investigate why it stopped working, and make sure its ready for whatever the future will throw at it!
Warning: Contains boring Open Firmware commands. But certainly useful if you want to boot a G4 PowerPC iMac, eMac, or Powerbook from a USB drive.

What’s funny is that needing to drop into Open Firmware to boot from USB isn’t a firmware limitation, it’s an OS limitation. Any Mac OS 9 capable Mac with AGP graphics or later (1999 onwards, so starting with the iBook, slot-loading iMacs, PowerBook G3 Pismo, and AGP Power Mac G4), with a firmware update that came around early 2000, could boot Mac OS 9 from USB without a problem. It is the Mac OS X bootloader for those machines that doesn’t know how to boot from USB. I worked as a Mac technician in those days, and we just used FireWire for any Mac that had it, since the USB 1.1 ports of those models are slow. That and a binder of install discs for every imaginable OS version. :)

These 2 videos are AWESOME. It's so valuable to record and provide commentary on everything you do to refurbish and rebuild these machines. I know I gave you a hard time on the previous video regarding how much thermal compound you used… but you asked for it! Anyways, I recently rescued an Apple eMac with 1.25 GHz processor, 40 GB hard drive, amd 2 GB of RAM, and had it professionally recapped. Taking it apart was somewhat easy. Putting it back together was another story. I attempted to use a USB stick to install the OS but couldn't figure it out. I happened to have a factory disk for 10.5.8 so that's what I used. I'm starting to see why I should have used a previous operating system because I wanted to run a lot of classic apps and the architecture just doesn't support it on my version. 😢 Anyways, lovely videos, glad I found your channel. TYSM! I needed to know how to boot from a USB on one of these old machines as the install of Tiger was corrupt. I'm not really sure why Apple made is such a pain in the backside to boot from external USB's on these things and then decided to make it 10x easier on Snow Leopard... Annoying.

As a suggestion, if you get a FireWire enclosure and put an SSD in it, you can put the Mac OS installers on that. While Mac's of this era did not boot to USB, at least without the Open Firmware rigamarole, they happily boot up to FireWire external drives. Cool stuff here, you deserve a lot more than 128 subscribers.

Great comment! Yes I am aware of the FireWire drive option, but the only FireWire drives I have require external power and are quite bulky, which makes them a bit of a hassle to move around and hook up to different machines. I’m keeping my eyes open to find a small enclosure 👍👍

Should I also change the HHD with an ssd ? Or is it Just due to the processor ?
@TheBasementChannel

I suspect the issue is probably to do with the processor and codec. More modern h.264 codecs are very taxing on these older processors, especially if they lack the hardware accelerators to decode. Upgrading the RAM or installing a SSD would probably not make any appreciable difference. Using older DivX or Xvid codecs will work better. Great stuff with the eMac. Just one question, I have one also but keeps freezing a minute after the apple logo and screen is white with 2 thick vertical black lines. When I checked hardware test it came back with bad video ram however sometimes it passes also. I think the ATI 9200 Radeon is soldered onto Mainboard which would mean a hard fix. Just checking that there is no easy option to swap out video cards for an eMac. Was hoping to see on your video where the ATI 9200 Radeon was on the eMac and what options if you get Hardware Test failures. Cheers
