The thing about picking a major you hate is so darn relatable. I'm a Chemical Engineering student in her first year right now, and I need to have an uncomfortable conversation with my parents about how I want to study teaching instead.

I tutor year round and my student today told me he didn’t feel like he was getting any better, and then I showed him his past work and he was able to see that he actually got so much better. Both of our confidence was boosted! This is why we educators do what we do! Have that conversation with your parents, and best of luck on your journey to becoming a great teacher!!

Work your way up and pay for your college. If your parents can’t support your dreams and cut you off then they don’t truly love you and it’s better that they are out of your life. You’re an adult now, you make your own decisions. I did this by working 80 hours a week for a full year to save up for community college, it’s possible.

Writing could, aside from your dream job which i assume is along the lines of author or screenwriter, get you into a few "safer" careers like public relations, journalism, editing/copywriting, librarian, technical writer or even teaching. I would just make sure your major is not to specialized on one thing. Music is less open in that way, but even there you'd have alternative fields like different forms of teaching or sound editing or event management. There is no need to sacrifice studying and working in a field you love for job security. But you gotta think outside the box sometimes and go in with realistic expectations that it might not be the absolute dream job in the end.

When my mother went to college, the first day, they had a freshman orientation assembly (it was a small college, and the entire freshman class easily fit into one assembly hall). The Dean of Students stood up, and said a bunch of stuff about life, learning, and all that jazz. Then, he got down to rules. First, he said, "Cooking in your dorm room is NOT ALLOWED." Next, he said, "So, when you're going to cook in your dorm room, this is how you do it..." He gave tips, like, "Turn your electric iron upside down, prop it up with books on either side, making sure they don't touch the iron plate. Then, you can heat up your canned soup, or grill your cheese sandwich." Really, the DEAN told them how to break the rules, effectively. I think the idea was, "They're going to break the rules, anyway. Might as well tell them how to do it without setting off the fire alarm, or injuring themselves."

on bringing forbidden items, it all depends on your RA and how much res services checks your room. i’ve never had an RA check my room and res services only checks rooms over christmas break. we had a toaster my first year, i’ve also had dorm pets and plenty of substances. you really just have to know how to cheat the system🤷‍♂️

im doing something called "interactive arts and technology" which pretty much gives u an opportunity to study anything related to media, design, art, or communications, like game design, virtual reality, graphic design, basic coding, sculpting, social media and so on. but i applied for this program before i knew what i truly wanted to do, which i know now. i want to become an environmental engineer but i cant change now. i guess i will change in second year because im literally not interested in this program at all.

My college didnt have friday classes. Considered creative days. It was Art school. But those days were also for make ups if professors had to cancel. And I was a senior when they let us back on campus after a year and a half of zoom. I had sophomore roommates first time on campus. I preferred dorming on campus and it was close to my majors building. They didn't know any of the dorm rules/didn't read them and whats not allowed. I would explain, did not listen. I didn't care half the time. But just saying listen to the senior thats been on campus before, and get mad when the RAs get onto for having stuff not allowed. My last 2 quarters as a senior was some of the most stressful and not a lot of free time. A ITGM game major where that last two quarters your in a team making a game, also in a post production zbrush class creating a character in the style of the company you want to work for.

@@Theworldisbeautiful9 for easy degrees you are competing with everyone else that took the easy way out for the rest of your life. not saying its not important but there are way to many art history majors then art history jobs. same with 90% of the degrees that are offered. get the hard degree with a stamp and you have the certification for a fulfilling well-paid career. what college is suposted to do.

the only thing is that you have to balance “something that you love enough to study THAT in-depth” and “something that gets you a job to start”. like i love history and especially when it comes to niche shit but you have to get an advanced degree and luck to get a good-paying job there 🙁

Ask people in your residence hall (specifically upperclassman) if they have toasters, warmers etc. Me and the girls in my hall almost all have wax warmers and toasters, mini ovens , air fryers that aren’t usually allowed. We just put them away when it’s time for room checks
