How different is washing your E-Bike to washing an analogue bike? After all electric mountain bikes are.. ELECTRIC, and surely you don't want to be getting it wet! To be clear though, it is perfectly safe to get your eMTBs wet after all manufacturers expect their bikes to be ridden in all types of weather. But you do have to be slightly more careful when washing your eBikes with things like pressure washers. Owen Coutts is here to clear a few things up when it comes to washing your electrifying steeds!

Muc Off do a great chain cleaning device. The degreaser reservoir operates with a button and the bottom is closed so it can just sit on a shelf between uses.

Always amazing, how these kind of cleaning-recommendations keep us mechanics selling new bearings for headset, hubs, bottom brackets and time intensive search for creaking parts, in the shortest possible time after purchase of the bike. Good job with the hose, keep this information up and running, so us mechanics will never get unemployed! Thanks for the support! 😁

What would you, as a mechanic, do differently?
@Jester5110
@Jester5110 Ай бұрын
@@Quefelsees I'd keep those hose (and any pressured water) as far away from my bike as possible and so I do for 24 years now. A 10l bucket hot water with some dishwashing liquid and a big sponge is all my bike gets. Sure: This means more work, but it saves your bearings. I'm proud to say, that my hubs, bottom braket and headset still contain 24 year old bearings on my road bike. They've seen around 75.000 km now and run like a charm. A good friend of mine owns a 2014 Scott Genius and is doing the same to his bike. He only needed to replace his headset, bottom bracket and hub bearings three times now, only due to the fact, that a MTB is running in a more harsh environment. I see a ton of customers, wrecking their bearings in about half a year, some need only a few months. Each one of these bearings were soaking wet and rusted to the extreme behind those seals. The problem are the seals lips. They easily let water from a hose inside, due to the even light pressure, but after that, the water ist trapped inside, with no way of getting out again. The rest is a matter of time, chemics and phyics. I certainly hope, I could provide you with knowledge and I haven't been too nosy. :o)

@@Jester5110 Thanks for the elaborate answer! I appreciate it! Not every day these days that you get a well written and informative answer in a KZfaq comment… I have one question left though: what do you say to people who say something along the lines of “As long as I keep the pressure water jet away from the bearings, I don’t see a problem with pressure washing my bike”?
@Jester5110
@Jester5110 Ай бұрын
@@Quefelsees If you keep a distance, long enough tho keep your bearings save, the cleaning-effect of that hose would presumably go down to barely non-existence. That is only my opinion and not written into stone. Maybe I should be going to test this out some day...just out of curiosity. I think, for those who can afford bearings every few months: Do so. But: With all those fancy new road bikes (and even some MTB, nowadays), were each single cable is hidden today starting inside the stem, throug the steering tube, in the upper and lower tubes, a headset-bearing-change can cost half a fortune. Each single one of those cables needs to be removed, to gain access to those bearings. Your hydraulic disc brake needs to be bleeded afterwars. That can take up to a little more than a hour of mechanics time, wich leads to an stunning invoice afterwards. People think we are crazy, when we explain them what amount of an invoice the can expect and a lot of them reject the repair, especialy those with bikes on the lower price-edge.
@Quefelsees

@@Jester5110 Thank you for the insight! It’s true: I had friends experience very high invoices with seemingly little things to repair. I can understand both sides though. However, I still want to pay as little as possible for repairs. I will keep your advice in mind. Thanks again! Have a nice day!

Good idea. I tried the allen key in the spider tip from EMBN, but it was a bugger to remove afterwards. Also worth adding that some bikes (e.g. Specialized) turn on if you rotate the cranks backwards, so watch the fingers!

Juicy lubes concentrate bike wash is great. I've also used a little car snow foam in a spray bottle, does the job..if its good enough for the car, its good enough for a MTB. They're designed to ride down mountains, snow foam won't harm them. Just one big peatys sales vid. .

I now use a front fender on my Canyon E bike, I ran it some last year in light mud with no fender. The very lowest part of the headset area, the turn limiter plastic piece was all but packed with grit and mud, made horrible noises till I took the fork off and cleaned it all out. Simple Green works great and is cheap. I would not spray de-greaser on a chain on bike. Any brush will work for cleaning, some old paint brushes work great for a lot of bike cleaning. Tires need stiff brush. Ebay has stiff brushes that are super cheap, brass bristles work well.

Great tips! Sometimes you need degreaser to shift the more stubborn grit. The best way to clean a chain is in a parts washer and then drying it with a compressor. I have found chains last 2x as long that way.

This is how I do it. Clean chain set with chosen degreaser, I use bilt hamber surfex hd as it doesn't flash rust. Then spray the bike with snow foam, I use ultimate finish or bilt hamber auto foam, then rinse. 99% clean at this point but then I use Green MX bike cleaner to get the bits that arent clean done. Dry bike with bike dryer. Then I will agree, Peatys lube is top draw. I use wet lube this time of year and I do notice the difference from any other lube, even peatys other lubes including mixed lube.

I was curious about the motor and battery as I've recently purchased a Canyon Strive On ebike. I take the battery out and put the skid plate back on when washing down. I don't use a jet wash but a garden hose. Is it OK if some water gets inside where the motor is as I noticed there are drain holes. Great vid btw.

I like damp "hero" dirt but that is as far as I go. I detest muddy conditions because of the damage gritty mud can do to your bike! I do use Muc Off for my cassette and chain. But I do clean my eBike after every ride. You take care of your bike and it will take care of you! This video does seem like a Peaty's commercial a bit...

I use finishline showroom bike polish for my shines been using them since 1998 never looked back. It protects and keep my bike looking like new always, as for peaty's never heard of them any maybe that's why. the tools for cleaning do look good however, I also use park tools brushes for cleaning. 1 soften the mud, I usually use a wet rag, I never use hoses because of flooding my channels such as runways that leads to inside the frame, water leads to lose bearings because the water will settle in the head tube as well where your headset sleeps. stop creeks and squeaking before they get a chance to get off the ground, stop being lazy, take of the wheels and wash them separately, same for the chain, wet rag wipe does it most of the time, or take them off, its easy with a chain took and Wala done. all is left is to lube back your chain and done. no future rust marks or stains

it may well be a bit more messy but a better way to clean the bike is to use a soft brush and some rag to remove a lot of the dirt first. Then use a damp cloth ( just water or a cloth wetted with a bike cleaner) to get rid of what remains. Any spray you use will merely turn mud into a watery silt and then that goes into all the pivot bearings etc. the wheels can be removed to give the tyres and rims a clean with bike cleaner and then water but personally I avoid using water on the rest of the bike apart from a damp cloth. One thing that can happen using a hose/spray is condensation inside the frame.........which often houses the controller and of course all the cables and connections.
