**ATTENTION RAY** - This is a known issue with many Honda V-6 models where the front VTEC spool valve leaks oil down onto the alternator below. Honda TSB 20-023 has been issued with the technical repair procedure to address this issue. I had this same problem on my in-laws 2016 Honda Odyssey. Replacing the gasket on the front VTEC spool valve resolves the issue. DO NOT replace the front valve cover gasket. It will not resolve the oil leaking issue and you will end up frying your new alternator eventually again. Once again, Honda TSB 20-023 has the repair procedure for a proper fix for this. Hope this helps others on here as well!

for the record, did this same job on my odyssey. very funny to watch you go through the same struggles and thought processes I did! I'd highly recommend the VCM delete others are recommending. also, the oil spillage above the alternator is probably coming from the rocker spool valve (VCM solenoid) gasket. I haven't finished the video yet, but if you didn't, you seriously need to replace that or you're gonna be frying the alternator again

Hey Ray, I know a guy that runs a coach / bus company andhe was telling me once that he was finding it harder and harder to find vehicles with manual box and he wanted manual gears because the auto boxs were a pain in the backside. I advised him to check the voltage on the battery because the electronics required the 24v and lots of current before it would work properly. He changed battery for a new one in the bus that had gearing issues and low and behold the gearing isses disappeared. As if by magic :)

Not class-leading gas mileage, but gobs of easy to access power and great reliability as long as you stay on top of standard maintenance (oil, timing belt changes, and valve lash). Responds well to upper-intake cleaning, also.

My sons VW Jetta had a bad alternator and while taking it to the dealer to verify, it started shutting down all the computer controlled systems. We had to charge the battery 3 times on the 10 mile drive. After the dealer said it would be $780 for the alternator and another $760 to install it, I chose to do it myself. Very cramped working on it, but after removing the AC compressor and tensioners and rollers and belts, I got the alternator removed. $280 for a newer one and a total of about 5 hours later his car was back in good health without any warning lights. I attempted this repair because of your channel. I watched a few other videos about the repair and referred back to them when I was unsure about something. But, I got it done and saved $1200. Thanks Ray.

The old ones had some wear and after replacing them I had noticeably better acceleration. More than I expected. Hopefully that equates to better gas mileage.

I think the alternator is a weak point in the Honda Pilot we have, same engine though. The original one failed a long while ago, around 175K miles or so. I didn't know there was a red battery light to indicate the problem until it was too late, the battery was running the vehicle until it ran out of power. I replaced the alternator with a unit from AutoZone. That seemed to work fine for almost one year, and that dreaded red battery light on the dash showed up again. Had a second unit installed, a way more expensive OEM type, which has been fine since. The vehicle's engine has been VERY forgiving, otherwise, for other repair and neglect. Noticed a ticking sound coming from inside the engine compartment, passenger side. Ignored it, thinking it was just a tensioner going bad. It was not that. The timing belt (original) lasted way past the interval time of when it was to be changed. It finally gave way, the tensioner for it, and not the tensioner for the serpentine belt. Had it towed to the mechanic this time, as I didn't have a place to do the repair, and it would have taken too long and cost too much in down time. Got one of those kits for belt, water pump, and tensioner (seals and all the necessary hardware), to bring to the their repair shop. They said it had a 50/50 chance of not running if the valves and pistons got misaligned. Very thankfully, they got it repaired with the parts, and it is running as good as new, to this day. I'd say the only nuisance the vehicle has now is the A/C control. The different modes to use defrost on windshield, floor, or vents in the dash does not seem to change where the actual air flows. It will let you select the different options, but the air always is coming from just the dashboard vents. Other than that, our 2011 Honda Pilot has given us very little grief since we bought it brand new.

My mustang does that with the H/VAC. Does it make an annoying hissing noise all the time when running? If so you have a vacuum hose that got disconnected. I HOPE that is all that is wrong. Just saying what I have experienced. Good luck man.
@tallpaul9475
@tallpaul9475 Жыл бұрын
@@marclytle644 it does not make any vacuum leak type of sounds, but that would be where I would look into if it did that. Doesn't seem to be a hindrance, just a little annoying that it doesn't work correctly. It still allows to change from recirculation to fresh air and back.

The reason why it wouldn't shift into reverse is because every gear is controlled by the transmission computer and without enough power the dampers to give the transmission soft shifts does work and the pcm doesn't know what gear the your shifting the transmission into so that is probably why reverse didn't work.
@ryans413
@ryans413 Жыл бұрын
My car uses the Mass Air Flow sensor to determine soft shifts I know this because my MAF died once and my car went into gear so rough it shook the entire car and scarred the hell out of me. I plugged in my scan tool and the MAF was giving no readings. I replaced the MAF and the car shifted nice and easy again.
@KenSch2020
@KenSch2020 Жыл бұрын
@@ryans413 Yeah they put parts that shouldn't be attached to the transmission and make it part of transmission circuits so if a part fails it goes into a manual mode which makes the shift dampers not work years ago they had vacuum dampers which should be installed on newer cars in case the transmission has to go in manual mode without all the computer stuff.

At 1:28 you mention not having seen "not having the power to go into gear" before. I've done roadside assistance for a number of family, friends, and neighbors with Odysseys, and it's actually quite common for them to do that when the battery is dead. I've sometimes had to wait up to 20 minutes of charging to get proper shifting to return.

After your repair, the charging voltage should have been over 14V, shouldn't it?
@ryans413
@ryans413 Жыл бұрын
13 to 14 yes when the cars running and a fully charged battery should read 12.5
@itsadogslife...8825
@itsadogslife...8825 Жыл бұрын
14.2 volts is the perfect number, however this depends on the state of charge / condition of battery. items that are "in use" at the time of the testing. therefore everything off, lights, ac, radio, then test for acurate numbers. test two; everything on, engine just above idle, say 800~1000 RPM voltage should not be lower than 13.0 Vdc. If at any time the charging voltage rises above 14.8 Vdc then the battery will suffer and probably "boil dry" also high risk of TCU's, ECU's etc overheating and or being damaged. bulbs can even start to fail prematurely. Have fun everyone.

WOW didn't know Honda Odyssey's would not go into reverse if the battery is dying and hmm the Ghost Who Walk's around your shop now carries stuff around with her. Well the total rebuild of the Honda continues soon it will be a wiring rebuild as the electrons will freak out all the wiring with the new power it is getting. Also brave man handing over your beast to the Wife Unit, after seeing her video she has never felt all that power before and was scarily enjoying it so prepare for the "I want a truck" conversation too come mate 😱😱😱😱😵😵😱😱😱😱 Keep Safe Keep Strong 🦘🦘🦘🦘💖💖

17:56 glad to see you mentioned the oil saturation. That's probably what killed it before it got closer to 200k. I had oil start leaking on my alternator and it killed it in a few thousand miles. (Highway miles, so that took like 2 months) I was surprised how quickly it happened. The car only had like 40k miles on it too.

That looked to be a pain in the ass to deal with, but as always, Ray saves the day! 👌👏👍 You sir, have a priceless gem of a wife and family, protect them at all costs! I've never checked to see how far away I live from you (I'm in Lakeland), but one of these days I'd love to meet you and shake your hand and tell you directly how much I appreciate your work skills and knowledge. I would also like to pick your brain on a couple things I have going on with my 97 1500 4.3L and possibly a couple things with my 2005 Altima. Would like to just hangout, help you with anything I could in fixing up the shop, I'm not looking for money or trade work. I like helping people, especially people that help others and don't expect anything in return. I don't get to get out away from home much do to the fact, not only do I take care of my two x-files and home but I also take care of my soon to be 89 year old grandmother and her 80 year old friend that lives with us. My lovely wife works her butt off to support us (kids and myself) and so I'm able to be home to help my grandma. I also help and keep my eyes on my neighbor who now lives alone do to the fact that her abusive boyfriend who the cops had to remove from the home a month in a half ago, he likes to show up at odd times and knowing he's not allowed to be around her or the home. Enough with my rambling about me. From one father to another, thank you for all your hard work, dedication, humor, knowledge and honesty!! Ray, have yourself a great day!!!

I'm impressed she got anywhere. When the alternator on my 2012 Acura RL was on the way out, it would intermittently stop or dip below the voltage and/or current needed, shut off, and I'd have seconds to get off the road before the SH-AWD would have no power whatsoever. Happened on the freeway the first time, as I was passing a semi. Lost power as I was approaching the front with someone behind me, the charging system light turned on, and no shoulder on the left. Just had to turn on flashers, slow down, get off the road and restart it before the battery got too low to start it again.

My wife unit did exactly the same with her Honda CRV! The difference is I managed to get it in reverse but then the engine died and I couldn’t get it out of gear! This was on the road at the time. I had to put jump leads on it from my BMW ( battery in boot) and let it run for 20 mins to try and transfer enough electrons to get it back home. It was a complete success!
