If the power goes out, a long burning candle is essential. Making a crisco candle is a simple and budget friendly emergency candle. I took a 5 hour candle and show you how to turn it into a candle that will burn for 192 hours. We could lose power at any time. Knowing this simple survival skill will help prepare your home.

You have to try this! I am amazed at how well it works. After burning the candle 5 hours, the Crisco candle did not even hardly go down. If I was only using the taper candle, it would have burnt clear the the bottom.

@@sandysteinbrook They say if you have to sleep in your car, say if your stranded in a blizzard, that burning one of those tiny tealight candles can keep you from freezing to death. So I imagine a large 4 wick candle can provide a good bit of heat for a house.

I noticed Crisco has palm oil in it, which I shun. I bought some lard to bake cookies and compared it side by side to Crisco. The lard had one ingredient - lard. (correction it also has BHA hydrogenated lard, propyll gallate and ctric acid.) The Crisco is loaded with stuff they're not sure if it's in there or not. (May contain:. . .) The lard looks clear and smooth. The Crisco is cloudy and chunky. I feel like the body can digest lard better than Crisco. I am certain it is healthier than Crisco. And the cookies. . . They taste better. I know some doctors said don't use lard, but I think someone paid them to say it.

I agree. We have been told for decades that things like lard & butter are bad for us. Pushing the less healthy alternatives is good for the "healthcare" industrial complex but not so good for us. You are not the first person I've heard speak of how healthy it is to use lard, and the results are also better tasting. Examples are biscuits & pie crust.

@@lauriemclean1131. Actually, hydrogenated lard is not so good. If you can’t render it yourself, try to find a butcher who sells it already rendered……just pig fat, nothing else! If they butcher, but don’t render the pig fat, ask if they’ll keep it for you and watch videos on how to render it. The fat can be frozen till you render it then you can jar it up and keep in the refrigerator or pantry. Hydrogenated anything isn’t all that good. Look for pure lard if you can.

I'm going to be making my crisco candles within the next few weeks. I liked the mote for the purpose it served. My first choice would to be able to use the heat source I have in my home, but if there's a power outage, I'd prefer to have an option if you don't have a fireplace or a wood burning stove, or protect your home, do nothing, and risk freezing to death. I'd choose a small but comfortable size room to heat. I might even put a small flower pot burner in the bath tub, where it's safe from burning anything down (like what could catch fire in the bath tub?).

So what scares me personally about that is, the can of shortening is plastic. When I buy candles they're always in a glass jar. That is why I chose a sturdy glass jar. I have heard terrible stories of house fires because of candles, so I wanted to make sure I was choosing a safe option.

This is a great idea, but I have a couple tweaks, mostly because I've got some stuff laying around to use. First bacon grease, I love bacon and I hate wasting stuff, so there are several or maybe a dozen half liter (16.9oz) bottles around full of clean bacon grease. Yes, I know it is not nearly as firm as vegetable shortening, which brings me to ... Second I like those little baby bell cheese snacks, the ones wrapped in red wax. Again, I don't like throwing things away so there is a *large* and growing chunk of the stuff on a shelf. I've been thinking about making a candle or something out of it. Your video today inspired me. I melted a bit over a cup of that wax and poured it into a preheated canning jar like you've got, then I poured in about 3/4 a liter or 1 and a half of those bottles of reheated bacon grease and mixed it well. It is still a bright red BTW so it looks nice. This is about an 7 to 1 ratio, give or take. Its been cooling for a bit more than an hour and its a bit warmer than body temperature and about like a thick gravy, I stuck a taper candle in it and it stands up just fine. I'll reply to my own comment later with details about how well it burns.

I never understood why everyone doing the Crisco Candles scoop it out of the tub and put it straight into the jar. Get a three quart pot, rake all of the shortening into the pot, put it on low heat to slowly melt. While that is happening, get your two jars ready with the candles inside, cut to the right height and a large paperclip straightened out, then bent into a hook that goes around the top of the candle in the jar and the other end bent over the edge of the jar to hold its position in the center. Pour the melted shortening into the jars, place in the refrigerator till they set up. A squirt of Dawn Dish Soap in the pot, a good wash and rinse, pots clean, easy peezy.

for green house heaters, that is about 8 days of heat using a modification to increase the amount of surface area heated. as for fires, NFPA states that 20 houses burn each day due to candles, or about 8700 per year. this may or may not result in total loss, just the reporting using the fire cause system.

Agree. That is why I said in the video that I burn the candle for 8 hours a day because I won't burn a candle at night and usually there is enough light in the daytime that a candle isn't needed. Many people said in the comments, they would just put the candle in the plastic can. I tried to reiterate safety first and putting it in a glass container.

Hello! When I say 24 days that is burning it 8 hours a day. I never burn a candle while sleeping and there is no need in the daylight hours. But yes, if you burn it everyday it will last 24 days. I have made up several of these candles now to keep in case of emergency.

Do you think it would be safe to use essential oils, & food coloring on these candles? I would LOVE to have pink, purple, & white prayer candles going for 7 to 9 days straight with a little sweet smell
@sandysteinbrook
@sandysteinbrook 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, you can use essential oils. Put them in when the shortening is cooling, but not solid yet. As far as coloring...food coloring may work great, but someone told me that they used to make these candles when she was a child and her mom would use crayon shavings and it would tint the candles to different colors.

For emergencies I bought an oil lamp that burns paraffin oil that is formulated to eliminate smoke and shut. The reason I bought the oil lamp was that it was safer had a broader base and in an emergency air provided over 40 Watts of power. I bought several of them one for the kitchen and one for the bathroom and one for the living room. They are great for when power goes out and they are also very good for the core. A quart of oil was about $2.50. How much safer artificial light.

What is the reason for melting and re-solidifying ? Does it become more stable /hardened like the candle itself helping it to burn slow? Our power is shut off and I just seen this trick, I can't believe I never seen this before or anyone talking about it. Living in Florida I've been thru many hurricanes, and lots of power outs lol I'm def going to make several to prepare for upcoming storms but also my current situation. Do you need to melt it in order for it to work the same? I can't use a microwave or a fridge 😔
@sandysteinbrook
@sandysteinbrook 4 ай бұрын
Hi! Melting it just helps it to fit in to the jar better. If I just took a spoon and pushed it into the jar it would have a lot of gaps and not be solid. I dont know that it would affect the way the candle burns at all though. And the reason I would not just put a candle in the can of Crisco, as some people have asked in the comments, is safety first. I do not want to burn a candle in a plastic can. A glass jar and the candle which down inside the jar is what is safe...not a candle sticking out of a plastic can of crisco

If burning all the time, yes. But as I stated in the video, I don't burn candles at night for safety reasons, and during the day when the sun is out, I don't need candles for light. But in an emergency, this will burn for a very long time whether being a person that burns it continuously, or with more caution as I do.

In an emergency situation this would not matter but what does concern me about this is since it is the oil that is burning there is a possibility that burning this for a long time would leave a greasy residue on everything in the room.
