The number 1 rule for any candle/fire application is to USE CAUTION. We are talking mostly about this being an emergency situation where heat and light is needed. Especially thinking about those victims who had succumb to being frozen to death that was caught in a storm.
Using shortening as a candle can be a convenient and cost-effective solution in certain situations, but it also comes with some drawbacks. Here are the pros and cons of using shortening as a candle:
Pros:
Readily Available: Shortening is a common kitchen ingredient, readily available in most households, making it a convenient makeshift candle option when you need light in a pinch.
Cost-Effective: Shortening is generally inexpensive, making it a cost-effective choice for emergency lighting.
Long Burn Time: Shortening candles can burn for an extended period, providing you with a sustainable light source, especially when using a deep container and a suitable wick.
Sustained Flame: Shortening-based candles tend to have a stable, low-temperature flame that is less prone to flickering or being extinguished by gentle breezes, providing reliable illumination.
Recyclable Containers: You can utilize various containers, such as jars or cans, to hold the shortening, allowing you to recycle and repurpose items for your lighting needs.
Heat Source: Shortening candles not only provide light but also produce a modest amount of heat, which can be beneficial in cold or emergency situations.
Emergency Lighting: Shortening candles can be a valuable option during power outages and emergencies when traditional lighting sources are unavailable.
Homemade Solution: Making shortening candles can be a fun DIY project, especially for those interested in experimenting with alternative lighting methods.
Limited Environmental Impact: Using shortening from your kitchen might be considered more environmentally friendly than purchasing new candles, as you're repurposing an existing resource.
No Special Equipment Needed: Shortening candles can be created without the need for specialized equipment or materials, making them accessible to almost anyone.
No Power Required: Shortening candles work without the need for electricity or batteries, making them an excellent off-grid lighting solution.
Minimal Smoke and Odor: While shortening candles may produce some smoke and odor, they generally have less of these issues compared to other improvised candle options like oil lamps.
Cons:
Safety Concerns: One of the most significant drawbacks is the potential fire hazard. Shortening candles involve an open flame, which can be dangerous if not handled carefully. They should never be left unattended.
Messiness: As shortening melts, it can create a mess, potentially leaving behind stains or causing damage to surfaces. This can make cleanup challenging.
Limited Light Quality: The light produced by shortening candles is not as bright or consistent as that of traditional candles, making them less suitable for situations where a bright and steady light source is needed.
Quality of Shortening: The quality of the shortening used can affect the performance of the candle. Old or rancid shortening may not burn as well or produce as much light and heat.
Limited Applications: Shortening candles are best suited for emergency lighting and may not be ideal for creating a romantic ambiance or decorative purposes.
While shortening candles have their advantages, it's essential to be aware of these potential drawbacks and exercise caution when using them.

Candles are so expensive nowadays, I’m glad there there is an inexpensive option. This method also looks fun to do with my kids and value information to know in case of an emergency. ❤

id like to see a comparison burn of between these 4; a jar with shortening with a plain wick in it, a jar with a bottom of the barrel cheap candle as a wick, a jar with a "long burning" survival candle, and lastly a jar with a long burning bees wax candle. would be interesting to compare those times to see which is the BEST candle/ method to make the most of this prep. additionally, you could measure heat output on the pot to see if there are any differences. i saw on one of your other vids about the large terracotta pot and your jar maybe not producing enough heat? i was thinking you could do this same method with a coffee can and maybe multiple candles in one if it would fit in the pot. triple wick candles burn more evenly so i am told so you could do a coffee can with a triple wick.

Why not pack in mason jar and melt in the jar and top off from measuring cup?

Mine burn real good for about an hour but then they start putting themselves out. Do you have any suggestions to prevent this?

Why not set he can of shortening in a pot to prevent a disaster instead of going through all this with the jars? Just wondering.
