Fun fact, freight train brakes are controlled by air pressure in the brake line, which runs the entire length of the train. Lowering the pressure in the brake line increases the braking power. If any car separates, it will sever the brake hose, which will cause an immediate loss of pressure and make the brakes fully engage, preventing any part of the train from becoming a runaway. It's a simple and fail safe solution, much better than the old system used in the 1800s where a brakeman would have to literally have to jump between the tops of the cars and turn a wheel. At 1:13 you can hear the train "dump the air", which is when the failure began.

It is far from fail safe. Once the air that is applying the brakes bleeds off so do the brakes. Spring brakes would be much closer to a failsafe method.
@cryptearth3 жыл бұрын
@@madflyer1093 that's actually a very great comment - kudos as far as I know air pressure breaks in the way they'Re currently installed world wide operate simplyfied about this: - the physical break - often a disc break, but other types are also possible - one main air pressure line from loco to all cars - a reservoir on each car wich is require for the breaks to actually operate when you have a regular car without any air supply and let it bleed all off then the breaks are normaly free and the car can move - hence most cars, or at least one in a fixed set, has an additional handbreak operated by a wheel and is usually a drum break to make the air pressured breaks able to operate air has to be supplied to fill the per-car reservoir which is require to operate the main breaking cylinder when pressure is lost in the main line a valve opens that uses the stored air in the reservoir to initially apply the breaks - and to losen them again air pressure has to be supplied the rather fatal flaw you describe can be observed after rapid successions of applying and releasing the breaks - this empties the per-car reservoirs making the breaks inoperable - so trains have to stop completely after a certain number of breaks to refill all the air that was bled off by reapply the breaks after release - failing to do so can result in a train losing all its breaking power another additional flaw with this system: due to how this system works refilling the air will apply the breaks before enough pressure is built up to release them - so a train in motion would break when you try to refill empty reservoirs while moving - something this system is not designed for I fully agree with your very important comment about that this system is flawed when viewed from a wider angle - but, at least as far as I understand it, the main reason why this is system is used is due to its low rate of failure in comparisson with other solutions - also like the type of spring loaded breaks as you mentioned I guess it's a tradeoff between the rather expensive spring system - which would operate even if all air was bled off and the fact that only rarely the required air refill stop isn't done correctly / long enough / at all - and summed up the cost due to human error not following guidelines is just simply less than what it would require if most cars had spring type breaks which fail more often I'm sure that a lot of people already had this argue and hence someone already did the math about combinations like most of the cars with regular air breaks and in addition some cars with spring breaks - and, although a human life is invaluable, I guess it's just to expensive - which, although it's sad, death is a calculated risk to maximize profit
@TheSonic101603 жыл бұрын
@@madflyer1093 It's nothing to do with calculated risk. The emergency nature of air-operated brakes in a situation like this is invaluable, and in the immediate aftermath of the situation, the train crew needs to pin down the detached section of the train with handbrakes and, if they have them, wheel chocks. If brakes were held on by springs and held off by air pressure that would mean the springs are under constant pressure and tension, and would quickly wear out and lose their tensile capabilities, both reducing their effective braking capability by steadily reducing the amount of force they can apply in regular application and in emergencies.

Isn't there a brake supply in the back?
@turnerdeedo46333 жыл бұрын
@@jbreezy101 Train brakes apply when the air pressure in the brake line drops, and because the train broke in half, it separated the air hose between the cars, releasing the pressure, causing the brakes to apply. The locomotives have air compressors to keep the lines pressurized as the train rolls along, and the valve for the brake hose on the last car is closed so air will not escape out the back. What you might be thinking of is an E.O.T. (end of train) device. That is placed there so the driver can monitor things like the last car's air pressure and speed, and also acts like a brake light, making the back of the train visible to other trains.

The thing with rail car cracked knuckles is that you can almost only catch them when a coupler isn't coupled to another car. You can see a crack inside a coupled knuckle but almost only when the cars are not stretched. That stuff will keep happening for as long as loco engineers are too harsh on the throttle.
