I don’t bushcraft, but I watch your videos to help me prepare for my car and bike camping trips. Mostly for my bike camping trips, but for car camping it helps me prepare for the unexpected. Served me well over the years.

Nice kit! Interestingly the whole year of 1968 in Nam I never saw the US 66 Hammock. Could be cause I was USMC. BUT... I did have a captured NVA hammock and made rope by braiding supply pallet twine (paracord was nonexistent also) paired with my poncho, the old rubberized kind. Slept many a night out of the mud and loved it!!!

Good to let taller people know that about the military issue hammock. I've unluckily know that being I was issued one back in 80s. It worked somewhat for me then, being I had not finished "growing" yet. Now at 6'1 not quite comfortable enough now. Good video still, for over a month I've been using a hammock, though. A under quilt and over quilt made it quite comfortable in last weeks of winter in N. AL.

I have used that same setup on both multi day backpacking trips and month long canoe trips...I run my m66 through a snugpac jungle sleeping bag...if its very buggy i use a head net

I feel so validated! Back in the day when you did a video on making a hammock from a tarp, and then showed how the same tarp could make a ground shelter that convinced me to assemble a kit just as you have shown, with a surplus backpack, and military poncho with liner. I since added a blow up cheapie ground pad that I use instead of a quilt for winter shelter, either on the ground or aloft in the hammock. I added a bigger tarp to make more options for heavy wind and rain as either a fly, a wind break, or a ground shelter. The fly that came with my hammock, I keep as an additional precaution in heavy wind and cold. Bit could also protect my wood for fire, or someone else who needed it. Loaded with a camel back, a wine box liner and my sawyer filter I would have nearly a gallon of water I could carry, plus clothes, firekit and first aid. I bought a belly pack to use for EDC that straps under the pack in the back and gives me quick access to knife, phone, navigation, notebook pencil and some simple field first aid items. I have yet to trick out my tie kit like you have , but i have some bones I will use for toggles reserved. Thank you for your wisdom and ability to flex with a less expensive experience for us newbees!

I used a jungle hammock and poncho (with a bug net) for a long time quite successfully. The climate didn't need insulation for the hammock so it packed down to a compact size. Also used it as a hoochie set up when needed and joined muliple poncos together on bivouacs. Easy, sensible system. Cheers Dave.

Is South Georgia, the ground tends to be damp near any body of water. Used this a lot. Gets you off the ground. And then there are the water moccasins. A little bit of mosquito netting, and you are good to go.

Hey Dave started watching this video yesterday and my Internet went down. First world problems 😂. You are a real problem solver, i appreciate that. I suspect tent poles in the black bag. I wish someone would make some to erect an alpha tent from a poncho. Titanium and 12-14" segments would be super sexy.

Good system. I opted for a similar emergency shelter, except mine has a bugnet and is a tent and / or hammock. The rainfly I opted for a large, enough to actually cover the hammock. I opted for this system instead of my instatent tent. I found it more comfortable carrying this system.

Its interesting to see that the average height of a N. Vietnamese soldier translated into the dimensions of their gear. Would love to see this recreated in a size comfortable enough to sleep somebody like myself. I'm 6 ft tall and always preferred tarps and hammocks to tents.

Are you kidding that's my sleep system every time I go camping, except I don't have the Swagman roll and I really do wish I could afford it that would cut down on some of the other stuff that I carry but I'm still going to carry my wool blanket. You got some excellent equipment for sale that I really just wish that I could afford to get that compact equipment that you have but I'll have to do with what I've got that I put together over the years. Looks effective. I don't care for hammocks and in my mind they are more of a luxury for people who think they are comfortable. I don't. I also can't imagine sleeping in a hammock in a combat zone. Talk about a sitting duck.

Hammocking is an essential option to have in hand for getting off the ground (how high can an sleepy Airborne Ranger fall out of a hammock and still operate?). What about good ways to comfortably TIE YOUSELF 20 feet above the ground TO ABIG TREE, out of reach long term of mad moose and most grizzlies? I have some ideas using nylon GI belts. What have we learned from how snipers, especially enemies, have traditionally secured themselves up in trees? I am sure I should have researched KZfaq on the subject, and shall proceed thusly forthwith. Is that a Black Lab mix on scene? Is it hammock-buddy trained? Might be possible..

This would be great if caught in a rainstorm and you wanted to wait it out. I think as a shelter i would use it as a ground sheet over a debris bed, cause as a hammock you'll freeze your tush off.

I had a hammock with bug fly and a matching tarp. I have rls (restless leg syndrome) so I can’t get a relaxing sleep in a hammock. Sucks because they take no space compared to a tent

I envy folks who have the capability for hammock camping. If I'm out and about in the backcountry locally, chances are that there is *one* big tree, two trees not within ridgeline range of each other, or else trees so big around that the amount of cordage required is impractical. All smaller trees are in and around creeks, and ephemeral streams are not safe for use for that for SO many reasons. We're bound to what can be rigged with cordage and trekking poles around here.
