Montserrat the great teacher. Interesting to know that whilst other stars charge astronomical prices for their expertise Montserrat's classes are free. It's evidence of her commitment to the future of opera. She thinks to the future!

BREATH BEFORE SOUND. Brava Montserrat! Caballe stated in an interview that her first vocal instructor made her students do breathing exercises only for 8 months. No singing. Most parents pulled their children out of the class. Caballe said after 8 months she could sing anything.

She obviously had a great teacher. And she became one herself - in addition to being one of the best sopranos we have ever had. I feel sorry for the young woman, though…it’s a unpleasant feeling when you cannot do what your own teacher says but one of the most famous, respected and beloved maestras of all time? I would have died of shame.

Falsch verstanden.

It is amazing the number of singers you see in conservatories and in master classes that have good voices, but they cannot breathe and have not been taught or mastered proper breath support. The tone is always under supported. This is what Caballe is trying to get across. A good voice is nothing and will have no longevity if breath support is not truly mastered. Teachers and singers pay lip service to the concept, but oftentimes that is where it ends.

Preparing with the diaphragm beFORE to go to the high note. Great advice. As a cellist I was taught the same thing about very large shifts. Prepare your left arm/hand up to the new higher position placement just before you shift upwards. It makes a huge difference and shifts are so much easier that way also so much more reliable than trying to move everything at the same time

Oh come on...that’s a bit harsh. I agree with you partly - she was very lucky to have that chance with the great Caballé. But you cannot fix habits you have learned and continued having for ages, in five minutes. She had probably been singing like that for years. It’s a long process to change that - technique is a tricky thing. Could be impossible even if that’s gone for too long - if you are not young anymore and/or you don’t have the right and patient teacher and a lot of time yourself.

Well, "singing from the diaphragm" doesn't actually happen. It's an autonomic muscle. What she is trying to get her to do is keep her airflow stable, preemptive and constant. When that airflow is moving correctly and properly supposed (using the muscles she keeps pointing to), it will remove tension from the neck and larynx. The support precedes the breath with precedes the sound.

When you have this big resonance like this young girl, you tend to relay on that rather than support. In my opinion it'd have been better to start from the first low note and try to make her feel what support is by singing very small intervals. Screaming high notes is very instinctual and opera is obsessed by high notes, but singing is a legato line and it seems to be forgot nowadays

Hi ...I will explain as someone who is a classical singer ..to reach that note with that jump and project ...when you are learning the voice tends to scream as the muscles are not strong enough to hold it yet gently ...its not that she can't hear herself ...its like saying to YOU lift 500lbs ..but don't heave it or jerk it ...just lift 500lbs lightly ...it takes a lot of physical development and she is only a teen ...and tbh the aria might be too big for her voice ..but singing this stuff ..its the only way to make the voice bigger ..like doing heavier weights ...but ALL sopranos go through a screaming stage ....i went through it ...the exercise of throwing out bombas or a swell helps ...anyway i would be more worried that she is slightly flat

FIATO-SINGING ON THE BREATH-NOT WITH THE BREATH. Monserrat CABALLE HAD A SUPREME CONTROL/COMMAND OF FIATO...EVERYONE TALKED OF THIS IN ESPECIALLY HER PIANISSIMO AND FLOATING HIGH NOTES THAT WOULD NOT END. 1950s-60s IN AMERICA, DID NOT HAVE many AVAILABLE ITALIAN MASTERS WHO SCHOOLED THE FIATO. I know a tenor who was in master classes with Pavarotti and Domingo. The very first sound is how the breath supports to cover at the passagio-FIATO IS THE TECHNIQUE that determines a career short or long. With that understood, a singer becomes well mastered to address any composer style. How Caballe could knock many performances out of the park with repertoire of over 100! RIP, La Divina🌹♥️

I really love Montserrat Caballe, her voice, technique, talent, humor and personality, but in this video I’ m not sure if I undestood completely what she pretends. I understood the low inhalation, and then I’ m not sure if she pretends the singer pull in her belly to give an extra boost of air to the high note. Most of the teachers speak only about supporting down the air while singing, not quicking it before difficult notes, but that’s what I understood she is trying to explain when she pushes the singer belly in and says “first the air, than the note”. But as I said I’ m not sure if I got it right. I tried that in my voice, and in fact if not done at the same time( the pulling in of the belly and the singing of the note),but pulling first than singing the note, it seems to me the note comes out rounder and easier, but as far as I’ve tried it you only can do that sometimes, with the difficult notes, otherwise you loose your air much quicker.

@joaopedro12 - practice hissing air like a leaking tire. Hiss air out your front teeth slowly than swell to a louder hiss and feel the process of what is happening in your body. You should feel a tightening of the abdomen first then air comes out through your teeth. That is the proper breath cycle of exhaling for singing. Pressing down of the diaphragm first then air goes up through the body, through the vocal folds and out your mouth.

@Serinia4melodic - pure appoggio dictates a pulled in stomach for the whole phrase but I have found you can achieve to the same solidness of support without pulling in the stomach so harshly. Unless you are singing very long phrases on one breath you don't need to pull it up at all. The power comes from the rectus abdominus muscles, obliques and pelvic diaphragm area. In simpler terms, the muscles to your sides and in the mid and small of your back.

Ms. Caballe is trying to get the young lady to have more breath support in her singing. Ms. C is pressing on her stomach because that is where the muscle you need to use to support your breathing are. a good way to find this is to "suck in your gut". lol those are the muscles you need to SUPPORT your breathing. To exercise these muscles you could lay on your bck with some sort of weight on ur lower stomach and try to lift the weight up, and slowly let ur breath out to work on your BreathControl
@ReGremlin
@ReGremlin 3 жыл бұрын
I don't think she's making her suck her gut in, she's making her stick it out to counteract her pushing. How could anyone stop the diaphragm from raising up sucking their gut in? That sounds like the opposite you should do and funny enough the book exercise is very exemplary of this. Appoggio is about trusting that never ending pressure in the epigastric region to essentially do the work for you.

singing opera is very physical and if you are trying to teach support and breath control and can't give and example to a young singer because you can not longer do it is really hard.

You're an idiot. Caballe should not have to teaching breath support here...this is a basic tenet of singing that should have been taught by her teacher. She has the potential to have a very good voice but it's merely screaming because she doesn't support. Her teacher needs a good slapping.

Flyinghow not an idiot... breath support taught by her compared to any other random teacher may be very different. Learning the basics from the best means learning the best basics which is valuable.

Montserrat Caballe is considered to be one of the greatest sopranos of our time. However, in this masterclass scenario with a young student, I would have suggested that she have her to first inhale slowly through the mouth (take the breath as if reacting to a happy surprise), this should give the singer expansion all the way around at the bottom of the ribcage, and then MAINTAIN that ribcage/abdominal expansion WHILE she sings. This can also be felt or demonstrated by doing lip trills, voiced "V" or making a hiss or "snake sounds.

@Cricriiii 8 жыл бұрын
+Charles Dotson How do you maintain that ribcage without collapsing as soon as you start losing air to phonate ? Where to you find the "cap" that prevents you from losing it all but control it instead ? I just started opera lessons and this is something I don't have figured out yet... I'm trying to gather as much material as I can because I might eventually end up with an explanation that lights a light in my brain :)

It's not something you need to understand intellectually. You have to FEEL it. It's normal for beginners' ribcages to collapse once they begin singing so you have to practice, practice, practice until your intercostal muscles become strong enough to support the expansion of the ribcage. Then, you can fully support the sound. Caballe is the MASTER of the pianissimo and that only happens with exceptional support. The problem with most new singers is that they press on the vocal cords ("pushing" the sound) to get a loud operatic sound. A sound that carries in a concert hall is one that is fully supported with breath. The resonance is what carries, not volume. Keep at it... do regular breathing exercises and just sing one note "ah" whilst keeping the diaphragm (ribcage) expanded. Eventually it will get smaller as you run out of air but that's OK. Just keep practicing until you can hold the note longer and longer. Sing mezzo-piano to not strain the voice. Good luck!

Luv Peonies Oh thanks ! I've heard this plenty of times, but somehow it meant something to me now, after all the work I have done. I finally got a mental image of what I should feel, since I've improved a lot my belly and ribs expansion. Thanks :)

@Remalia19 She means that the breath has to come before the sound. The note must be supported by the air to give it resonance. Unsupported notes sound "screamy" and do not project. If you are singing in a huge theatre you have to ensure that you are audible and this is how she is explaining to do it. You have to use the diaphragm to support the sound xx hope that helps

How do we support the very first note in the phrase? Does the breath begin to move just before the initial onset?

@Remalia19 It is clearer in some of the other videos what she is trying to achieve. The pushing is to remind them which muscles support the breath and thus the sound. This girl did not fully grasp the concept.

the two best teachers i studied with were from the juilliard school. why? because they know how to teach without pushing the the sound out of a student or correcting by touching. the student must intellectually understand the correction, then synthesize it through her body without being touched. this student sang under the pitch not only because she wasnt breathing, but because she wasnt lifting her soft palate on the inhalation of the breath. instead cabelle's pushed on the students diaphragm .

It is sad that she is not explaining this well. She is talking about the AIR going up. She said first the breath then the sound. It has nothing to do with pulling the abdomen up, but rather releasing the air up. The singer's job in proper appoggiare is to hold out against the pull in and that balance is appoggiare. But the air should always lead the sound.

I feel so bad for this girl. 120,000 plus views of her getting told that basically she's spent eight years learning bad technique. I wouldn't wish that experience on anybody. At least it happened in her early twenties and not her thirties; hopefully she was able to work things out. It's a nice voice

I don't disagree with anything all of you said except that for me Support is keeping the diaphragm lowered for as long as possible ( softly)...(though of course it goes upwards as soon as you "loose" Air through talking or singing f.e.). Anatomically that is definitely up to the newest medical knowledge...but I suppose the "Bauchpresse" that was used a lot by classical singers quite a while ago...must have worked for them. It's also all a question of 'how does what is happening in my body feel to me' since everybody is not only build slightly differently but also experiences senso-motoric Sensation quite uniquely. Thank you for the wishes. In our field of work one can really cherish them... Luck is so detrimental!
