Not the most virtuostic piano concerto but the adagio is heavenly one of my all time favorites. Giels doesn't play down to it He gives it its due A LION of the keyboard

The St. Botolph's symphony orchestra and Colchester Philharmonic. I know these aren't notable orchestras but they were pretty good. The philharmonic was an all professional one. I never played the Grieg though but works such as Beethoven Choral Fantasy, and four of the Mozarts. Have you heard of Alexander Ardakov? He was my scales teacher at Trinity College London and always spoke enthusiastically about Gilels saying he was his favourite interpreter!

Met him that year at Carnegie Hall. His performances of Beethoven Op.27 no.2 and Chopin Op. 53 re-defined these pieces for me.

Steven Yourke He was. I did hear him in concert once, when he was ill, and he still gave a bravura performance. I was so lucky to have been here at that time and to have heard some of our greatest pianists - Gilels, Richter, and Rubinstein. Very young then but I vividly remember them all and thank God for the privilege!

Уважаемый Дмитрий! Прошу прощенья ,Бога ради, что не знала Ваших исполнительских программ! Потому, как я нахожусь очень далеко от СПб...Но в СМИ - вчастности - радио,ТВ - давно не слышала Грига. Даже так популярной сюиты к Пер Гюнт... Когда-то по радио даже передавали рассказ К. Паустовского «Корзина с еловыми шишками» ,посвящённый Э.Григу, как и музыку... Но сегодня мало, кто знает и Паустовского... Всё уходит в небытие А ещё когда-то в молодости помню зарубежный очень красивый, лиричный фильм о девочке - пианистке, исполняющей концерт Грига. Вот почему у меня грусть, простите!

Great concerto that was Rachmaninoff's favorite BTW. Grieg was a very underrated composer and IMO best one in the Northern Europe Emil Gilels was great in it, that goes without saying

Согласен, Гилельс один из великих. Но есть ещё достойное исполнение этого концерта - с Дьердем Цифрой, где дирижирует его сын. Редкая запись. На ютубе не нашёл.

Fabulous virtuoso playing from the the great Gilels, a true titan, a much better pianist than Richter overall IMO. There is only one other version to compare with this, again live in London, and that is Michelangeli, where the sheer elan and virtuosity is breathtaking. OK , it's not such a difficult work and so those masters can just toss it off as if it were child's play, but it is a supremely effective work, guaranteed in great hands to bring the house down, as it did here.

Actually having just listened to ABM's live Festival Hall recording with de Burgos, it is white hot and 5 minutes shorter, ABM was on fire and the audience explodes at the end, which was very rare in London in those days.

This is ,for me, is much more better than Gilels, Jochaum with Amsterdam (present here), However the great Great German conductor gave an extraordinary conducting at the atmosphere of german music, Gilels kept his poetry and the result is brilliant. I advice the Gilels lover to listen too to it

He was being modest :P, his 2nd and 3rd to me are the top of piano concerto's with those of Chopin after that, of course that is also just my opinion but this one does indeed rank amongst the top as well. Hard to actually give them a actual position, to me it differs depending on mood.

So there's this anecdote about Gilels. He's passing by a mother and her little daughter in a corridor of the Moscow conservatory. The mother, whispering: "Look, the greatest pianist in the world." Gilels, who has good ears, is very pleased. Says the daughter, with her eyes wide open in awe: "SVIATOSLAV RICHTER!!!" 😁😁😁

@@petermerelis Popular taste but also critical taste change or fluctuate over the years. When works endure through these changes and continue to be appreciated by wide audiences and performed by great artists, I think that says something about the quality of these works, beyond that they are just "easy listening".
