It’s not like the 8-mile movies - which in the real world took place in a time where it was somewhat unlikely to even have a vhs cam-corder present to film these types of things as they occurred- It’s not like that movie was just made up. Sure the lyrics are not entirely on point with reality. But it’s not hard to find anecdotes with people who were actually there, about how hard Eminem was ripping other emcees up. And in a way that was markedly unique in the culture at the time (and not just on the level of being a white emcee). Now Eminem has a number of freestyles you can find videos of if you search for them. The older ones. And while yes there is the typical freestyle that…. Is preconceived lines, over what is supposed to be a beat that the artist wasn’t pre informed about If you are a good listener and know the culture and the artist. You can pull out some times where it’s far more likely than not that Em was more or less going off the top, with the few pre written that come out of the back pocket to tie it all in together. So we are talking raps that are very much of the true ‘battle-style’. Off the top. Which isnt at all like the majority of this shit that goes on with ALLLLLL of these morning radio show interview freestyles every rapper is lining up to try and do - Where literally 90% of these artists are pre selecting beats or being pre informed of the beat even. And coming in with a show. Fully pre formed and set up to look like it’s not. [ highly recommend looking up the riff raff feeestyle with sway, and listen to what sway says at the end. Because despite what Ye, bless his heart, ‘might say…. In this case. Sway DOES know..😝🤫😏] However. All. That aside. If you want a REAL in the flesh example. Just look up what you are able to find if eminmens battles with MC JUICE. Who is one of the most respected battle rappers to ever grace the stages. Eminem at the least held it against him and at times arguably may have beat him. And those videos are out there to some degree- their shitty vhs quality aside. See the problem is that Em had that fire for battling back in the day. And he has since given that up more and more over time to develop a different kind of career. It’s EXYREMELY rare you ever find a an emcee who is legit holding it down in both battles and as a recording artist. Most of the biggest battle names over the years don’t have a single song that has got better than mid level views/listens. And that’s facts. Just because Eminem isn’t still battling today. Doesn’t mean that he wasn’t doing it at near 🐐 level in the past. And nor does he owe it to random parts of his fandom to suddenly re pick up that part of his life. He did it. He moved on. And we should respect artists for wanting to grow and change - rather than appeal to our nostalgia and shit like that- even if it is bitter sweet many times and we wish for more of the periods we most loved….
