Eminem was absolutely about that life back when this was released. He was known for carrying multiple guns around with him because of multiple death threats he was getting. He did a lot of his shows with bullet proof vests under his shirts. This was also around the time he started riding with 50 Cent, and you know 50 was definitely about that life. Em famously caught a case for running up on a bouncer at a club when he caught Kim kissing the dude. The bouncer says Eminem pistol whipped him, but Em said that he punched him and the gun never hit the guy. Either way, he had multiple assault charges, was on probation for a good long time. There are also interviews with people Eminem knew growing up, and he was known for having hands. He grew up as one of the few kids in a mostly all-black area. He got in a lot of fights, and by the time he was in his late teens he had enough respect from people to stop getting beat up just for trying to walk home. As an adult, Em trained in boxing with the same guy who trained Mike Tyson. Eminem knows how to fight.

I remember that on the album, this song is being introduced with an interlude of em sitting in a car with his friend and then catching his gf kissing another dude. He them grabs his gun and runs up on them yelling motherfuckerrr! And then the tunes of the song kick in. I even remember the # on the album. Interlude was on #5 and #6 was soldier. Back in the days, the albums you had was the only music you had. Must've listened to that album legit a 1000 times as a kid. Good memories, good music.

Yup, Proof was in my opinion the second best rapper in D12. After he’s death he pulled away from that hardcore gangster, thug, come get me type of life but Eminem was about it. He just didn’t want more of his people dying “when the music stops”.

think Genius explained Soldier pretty well: "Despite his bizarrely violent lyrics, Em never once labeled himself as a “thug” or a “gangsta.” He just had a thing for guns. It was only when his gun altercations of 2000 arose that the media began to apply those stigmas to his reputation." He just accepted that the media would always give him that image. He had always been getting in fistfights & carrying guns, but never claimed to be a gangster. But when he got famous, some ppl took the "slim shady" lyrics too literally & expected him to rly be a murderer Then he was arrested twice & convicted on weapons & assault charges twice in 3 months & the media ran w/ it. Always getting sued or arrested, the police trying to stop his shows, & probably the constant beef w/ other rappers, reached a boiling point. So he's like, I never pretended to be a gangster, but here's how I feel rn. bc u don't have to literally be a gangster to have a "kill or be killed" mentality or to not back down from a fight

Yes, that was Eminem. He was about that shit. That's why they took away his rights to bare arms. He was wildin out in his youth but that same energy is what made the youth of that time and to this day gravitate towards him. As he grew older he matured, that maturity you can see reflected in his albums. Plus loosing Proof and nearly dying of a drug over dose pushed him to change. To never be that person again a person who was toxic and he himself hated being. Which is part of the reasons he took what critics did to revival so personally because he had really open himself up and put himself out there on that album. But neither Fans nor the mainstream media gave it a chance they spit on it before listening to it or listen to a few songs and called it garbage. I listened to it and iit wasnt bad but it wasnt his best body of work either it was an okay album. But it also contain two songs which I believe are the crown jewels of his entire career on that album. Castle and Arose are two songs that can't be listen to just by themselves they must be listened to together and you will see what I'm talking about. Anyways yeah that was what young Eminem was about.

And Em comes from the hood, like for real, I wish people didn't forget that so much (that's not directed at Stevie, just in general outside of fans and stans). I just listened to the LL Cool J interview, from Kamikaze, and he said that he would answer the door with a gun pointed in the face of whoever was on the other side. Sorry for the semi-rant :)

I’ll start by saying that I admit I get incredibly annoyed by all the Eminem stans and the over-the-top circlejerk about how great of a rapper he is - don’t get me wrong, he is absolutely among the top-10, maybe top-5, most technically skilled emcees to ever do it, but he’s not on some godlike level that no one else has ever reached (speaking of others on that same level, I’d start by mentioning Royce - who I would say is the best to ever do it - as well as Black Thought, Aesop Rock, Elzhi, King Los, Andre 3000, Canibus, and Rakim, just to name a few). Having said all that, Em’s performance on Soldier is quite possibly the single-best and most comprehensively flawless of all-time. From the rhyme schemes, syllable placement, and meter to the flow and overall vocal performance, every single aspect could be cited as a textbook example of that technique or skill. The thing I’ve always found most enjoyable and impressive is something he does with the flow, which is how at numerous points throughout the song he uses this alternating dactylic, reverse-dactylic (which has a name of its own but I can’t think of it) meter while rapping in triplets (i.e. each syllable comes as a 1/4-note triplet), which has this really amazing effect of reinforcing both the power and rhythm of the vocals. What I’m referring to can be heard in instances like when he says “got the rep of a villain, for weapon concealing / took the image of a thug, kept shit appealing.”

I've been a fan of Eminem since 1998/1999..I was like 13/14 years old. Still a fan. So being a fan since the beginning, I've lived through his wild years, arrest, beefs, growth, etc...just about all of it as it was going on at the time. I know his discography, and I'm glad you're getting to know it too. The different types of songs he has. Did you hear all of the songs for his daughters?. Ems softer side as a father who loves his daughter Hailie is one of the reasons I love Eminem. It got better when he included her cousin Alaina (who is Kim's sisters child) and Whitney (who is Kim's from a relationship after him). Has custody of them. He's a father to all 3. I just love that. And his songs for them are some of my favorite..gets me emotional. He also had legal custody of his younger half brother Nathan.
