When Eminem came to England I think in 2002 I seen him in concert - he had a protest outside from people wanting him banned then also. Of course he wasn’t, came on stage with a mask and chainsaw and the rest is history

Come on. Dre knew exactly what he was doing. He was one of the architects of NWA and Gangster Rap. When he found Em he knew exactly what he had. And I thank him for it.

I don't think even Dre knew how fire Em would be. He knew there was something there, ofc, but there is no way he could see what Em is today. He produced Mary J. Blige, Eve, Ice Cube etc. That's a decent catalog already and he was obviously able to recognize talent when he saw it. But I don't Dre ever imaged that Em would blow up like he did from the first single and everything that came after that.

Ever heard the demo tape he sent to Dre (u can find it on YT if not - recommend it!)? To sign him was a null-brainer. Like, realy, the credit Dre gets is way overblown. Dre is one of the greatest, no question. But Eminem even at that time was already a polished diamond.

This was the time when Tipper Gore, our vice presidential first lady and US Congress were trying to find anything to blame for the violence in America at the time. This happened around the time of Columbine massacre. They tried to blame rap music heavy metal and video games and violence in movies. They never thought to question mental health, or bullying. They still don't bother to question it as much as they should. Em stood tall through all that and came out even better than the government. He's one of the loudest voices of my generation, and yet his words reverberate through all generations.

PMRC created by Tipper Gore started in 1985 when they started blaming violence and sex in music for bad behavior from kids. Before gangster rap and Em. Congress did of course harass Them later around the Columbine shooting though. Funny how the PMRC got the parental advisory label put on the albums but it only boosted sales lol.

The Eminem Show album was my birthday present from my mother when I was 15, my father was not a fan initially and my mother said "just wait" & sing for the moment was on every radio station and literally remember my father coming home from work & saying "I get it now, he has something to say". I'm from nsw australia, and I was Nine inch nail's(Trent Reznor is god) & LINKIN PARK....so the volatility of this song always kept with me, my mother and I literally spent every lockdown breaking down Eminem's albums I probably ruined my point there, but he's one of the reason's I'm still alive xx

The problem they really had with em was his influence on the White kids , its cool as long as rap stays in the hood but when it came to white suburbs thru em it became a ”problem”
@MrDMC11889

It was his influence on the white suburbs that did it. Em in the trailer park wasn't that big a deal for the powers that be. It wasn't just the fact that white kids listened to his music but the particular white kids. Poor white kids loved Em from the jump.

Facts, he exposed the hypocrisy of white America and white privilege and the government got involved. He was protested by Tipper Gore, Al Gore’s wife and Liz Chaney the BP’s fam. He was expressing his anger towards white privilege and hypocrisy.
@ashleyprince922
@ashleyprince922 2 жыл бұрын
Wasn’t even really that so much as him pointing out inequality to the white kids. Showing them that the country isn’t standing by its own constitution. When they can’t pin us against each other they fall because we notice their flaws. Ignorance is only bliss when you’re the one inducing the ignorance. The government hates that he is helping people see the problems with our government. And that’s also the reason this song is called “white america” because it’s actually a government built for white people, to aid the white people and keep the African American community oppressed and pinned against the white community. And the reason they are systematically doing that to Americans is because if we are fighting with each other we don’t notice how they’re fucking up the country. And that’s the problem.
@unclebounce1495

Of course. Whyts have standards. Listen to what he's actually saying. "whyts don't like it when artists glorify and teach their children to like crime, hurting woe-meyn and children, gang-lifestyles, and drugs. But the blayk community loves it and has no problems with it." It's not an indictment on whyt culture for him to say this. It's not "whyt america's" fault that blayk parent[s] tend to be absolute crap. Funny, though, he's trying to say the whyts are bad and the ghetto blayks are good for being shyt parents and having no expectations/standards/restrictions/limits. Riiiight. I like Eminem, but this message was just retarded childish angst crap that aged about as well as milk in the sun. Still has a great beat.

7:10 Em is just acknowledging that Dre gave him the credibility he needed to crack open the black rap fanbase. In return, Em introduced the white rap fanbase to Dre. The symbiosis between the two of them 100% both made Em who he is today and brought Dre back into the spotlight as a producer after he split from Death Row and started Aftermath.

I grew up in south Chicago heights as a white boy in the ghetto. I knew what hip-hop / rap was from listening with all my childhood buddies. Then we moved to rensselaer indiana and nobody listened to rap. Within 2 years of living there everybody listened to rap because the emergence of Eminem. He made white people feel like they could now be part off hip hip culture. He really did open a whole new world and he knew it. Thats why 9 times out of ten a white person will say Eminem is their favorite rapper cause the impact he had for us. He broke the wall that had been there forever and now white people could be part of something special. He even referenced how his skin was working to his benifit because before he blew up he was judged and outed simply for being white "rap culture was a little racist to white folks" so thanks also to Dr dre for actually looking past his skin tone. Breaking walls shattering boundaries and bringing people together.

They "hated" Eminem because he was the first Major white rapper to reach such a wide audience, especially youth (8 to 18) and I literally remember being 10 to 11 years old, and having to go to a school meeting several times in the Auditorium, for a PSA to students about his music and I quote "It's repulsive, and obscene nature" and they would suspend any of us found with his CD's in School. So your husband is definitely right! They tried to prevent him from hitting his own demographic.

I think that's 50% of the song's message, the self awareness about why he's got the reach that he has. The other 50% is about the double standards of white picked fence society critizising him more even though there is other rappers out there with just as "strong" lyrics. After no one literally gave a fuck about him in the past because he was a white dude in the game. Just my 2 cents though.

Oh man y'all! If my mom knew that I was listening to Eminem in elementary school and at my friend's house, she would have grounded me for listening to "Inappropriate" rap. Obviously, I was a rebel and didn't really tap in to the lyrics because I didn't really understand them. Perhaps that's what my mom was trying to protect me from. Til this day she still doesn't know. Am I going to bring it up? Hell no! Haha! Anyways, love that y'all reacted to and analyzed this song because listening to these lyrics, I understand. It brings a whole new perspective as an adult. So I got this CD uncensored for my 12th or 14th bday (I swear it was right when it came out, but I would've only been 12). I am white Hispanic, but I don't look Hispanic at all. From this perspective, I 100% jammed to this song. Em was my introduction to rap. I went and sought NWA and 50 and Pac and everybody because i saw Em on TRL. I was little Erica, a young white suburban kid who saw a cute guy and begged her parents for the CD and got it. My dad knew who Em was and grew up on rap. He got it because he wanted to listen to it too and could pass it off like a gift lol. I raided his CDs to listen to more rap ETA - he is also speaking to the fear white America had of him. He was corrupting their children. He was introducing them to rap and hip hop. He was infiltrating the airwaves to pollute their children's minds. He looked like them, so they related to him and bought his music.

Eminem references the parallel to Elvis and converting something that was initially Black music to music for everyone. But the same happened with Jazz about 20 years before that. Which makes it a pattern. Black Culture originates, some white kids, especially poor white kids growing up in proximity to Black communities get exposed to it and one with talent helps it break big to white audiences. Now both Jazz and Rock are seen as music for old white people.

Great line regarding the history of em at the time is the "fuck you Ms. Cheeny" the wife of Dick Cheeny, held a full press conference for the sole purpose of telling Eminem what he can't say. All while her husband was holding a hearing in congress for the same reason. Like "who the hell are you Ms. Cheeny? You don't like my music to the point of holding a press conference? Fuck you"

Eminem is not referring himself to b privileged but rather unwanted in this hiphop scene coz of his color.... but coz of his talent and dr dre's acceptance of his talent beyond his skin, he got a chance... and he is very self awarethat heconnected with the audience immediately coz he was like one of them... white with blue eyes so it somehow helped him in this success... thats y he says if he was black he would have sold half coz he knows he might had been lost jn all d other greats but his skin color has started to work to his advantage...

A bit of the first verse is that he was considered “trailer trash” for the first 20 years of his life. Why even after he got a record deal, he still felt like an outsider with mainstream White America.

I was in the 8th-grade grade going to be a freshman in high school when Eminem first came into the scene. People have been trying to cancel Eminem for the last 21 years. From politicians, GLAD(Gay, lesbian, and I forgot what the last letter stood for) to a bunch of different groups of people trying to stop Eminem's career, but Marshall is still here. Most rappers at the age of almost 50 would have retired by now, but not Eminem, he is still at the top of his game. Eminem not only keeps up with these up-and-coming artists, and in most cases can smoke these new school"rappers". Since day one Eminem came out onto MTV I as a new hip-hop artist I never cared what color of skin he had. For me it's was what Eminem could spit as an MC. Sure Eminem may get away with rapping about sensitive topics(or the topics you shouldn't talk about) mainly because no one tried to rap about these sensitive topics before Eminem. Most rappers would say, you can't rap about the president." Eminem more or less said" Why not?" and proceeded to do so anyway. Em has always pushed the bar further and further away and made it possible for other rappers to not be afraid to express themselves as an artist. To say that Eminem hasn't done anything for hip-hop needs to check themselves because you know that is a lie. You don't have to like Eminem as an artist and that's your choice to do so, but you got to respect Eminem impact that he made in the game.

Dude people just dont let the song finish man, the last line of the song is one of the highlights of this entire track. That completely shifts the note at which the listener ends the song. " I'm just playin' America you know I love you". Damn, let the songs finish completely.

When Asia says "Is he saying he brought Dre back up with his white fans" YES.. He is saying EXACTLY that. BUT he is also saying that he gained a lot of black fans just because he was produced by Dre, so it was a 2 way street.

Alot of Eminem haters were silenced after he performed "Stan" with Elton John, most of them were from the gay community and after sing with Sir Elton John they could say anything about him being homophobic. Smartest career choice of all time, I feel by anybody. And side note, I'm white and was a Dre fan long before Eminem fan. Truth be told I didn't fuck with him in the beginning cause I thought he was just another Vanilla Ice (give it up for "Ice Ice Baby", such a good song I don't even care). I was really into Tupac 🐐 back then. And, I feel like in this song he saying that he more of a problem for being white because he can be more an influence on young white people not so much that he gets a pass for it. Great reaction, you two are beautiful and you both rock.

The song that gets slept on the most by black eminem fans is Brain Damage, and it is one ofvthe most important songs because it is a graphic description of how poor white kids grow up, it is my childhood and 90% of my friends childhood on wax; no love at home, no love at school, that is what spawned Heavy Metal, Punk Rock and white rappers.

I recently got into an argument with another hip hop fan (mostly drake, 21 savage, lil Wayne) about hip hop’s role as a tool to “speak truth to power.” He said to send an example, I sent this, and he said it was boring and sounded like an old man. I don’t get it man. A fresh onion doesn’t have as many layers as there are on this song. And from 1999-2002, this is one of maybe 20 Em songs that are working on so many levels. And to have that many levels and still figure out these complicated rhyme schemes to go with it. Crazy

Remember this was released not long after 9/11 hints the jet noise in the beginning. A lot of albums reference 9/11 it's scary people seem to forget history, if we did't we could learn the real reason behind certin events.

Y'all's channel is awesome. You don't care what it is, what genre it is or what color of the person is. Being a 54 year old white guy I feel the same way. Let's get all colors to sit down together And make peace. Let's face it, the government doesn't care about anyone outside the government no matter what color you are. So let's band together and let them see we are ALL AMERICANS. Keep doing what you're doing cause it's awesome.band Asia, you can damn sure sing. Why haven't I been able to buy your record yet?? Mad love

Five years ago, Eminem released another track about a very similar subject. The track is called 'Untouchable', and eveybody dissed it at the time. It got low scores everywhere and nobody was interested in listening to it. That started to change around 2020 with the murder of Floyd...
