As rats age, they may require changes to their daily care to help them. In this video I discuss common health issues in older rats, difficulties with eating and getting around their cage.

Pudding was such a good boy for the demonstrations, he deserves lots of pets! I appreciate you putting in the effort to make such an informative video, especially since the topic isn't an easy one. But due to your hard work SO many people and rats will benefit from this information for many, many years to come.

Thank you SO MUCH for mentioning penile plugs! I discovered this too late (when my oldest rat was almost 2.5), even though I've put HOURS into researching rats before I got them and still currently. I now practice with my younger rats. I'm not cleaning them yet, just getting them used to it for when they need it.

I had two older boys, who had both just turned two about 2-3 months ago, up until a week ago. I had been seeing signs for months with their fur growing a bit coarser and getting dirtier but up until about a month ago they were still relatively active. All of a sudden one of my boys took a turn, and just passed last week. His brother, who up until about 2 weeks before Gentle passed was just as active as ever, has slowly started to refuse to climb or do much of the harder stuff. Scooby has officially entered his geriatric phase, and I rearranged his cage to suit. However he does have two new colony members, so he isn’t alone. I’m glad to see that the tips I remembered from my first watch years ago stuck and I did the right things. And while I miss my Gentle Criminal, he’s in ratty heaven now and survived in spirit by his colony members.

If there ain't any rescues near you I would recommend looking online for people getting rid of theirs or can't take care of them. If you can't find any look for a good breeder. Now if there is no good breeder you would need to go to the pet store.

I was a bit concerned about if I was giving my older rats the right cage set-up. I do adopt rescues that have been through some very poor conditions and always keep in touch with the organisation from whom I got them. They did confirm that I was doing just right by them and your video also confirmed this. At the moment I am taking care of a very chonky old boy at the age of 2,5 years. He do get around but not as much as the girls I have. He is neutered so no babies! So I have made him a very accessible cage set-up and he is one happy camper. I give my rats a chonky mix from a seller that makes her own food and this seems to be just right for them. They get fresh food too and I make sure he gets food that are not too fatty. He is such a cuddlebug and boggles when hanging out with me on the sofa or on the bed. He enjoys being carried around at times too. Thus far he has no serious illnesses but I am keeping an eye out for any changes. Your link is absolutely helpful and I love your channel so much :) Sorry for long message!

Do you think you could do a video on how to care for animals when you have COVID (or anything similar, such as a cold or flu)? A lot of people don't realise that coronaviruses can spread from us to our pets if we aren't careful. I have COVID currently and my hamster's enclosure has literally the most COVID-safe space in the house lol (enforced social distancing including 'no entry' markings on the floor around his enclosure, absolutely no contact unless needed (so any medical emergencies and giving him his meds), constant hand washing when providing care, etc).

My two oldies are already 2 years and 8 months old, they're my oldest rats, the weird thing is, they were an oops litter, born from lab rats, while almost all of my previous rats were from a good breeder. Luckily, they're healthy as they can be in their old age, but their hind legs are very weak, one of them is losing his fur, and he has a lot of porphyrin around his face, they're not gonna be around much more 😔

I have a question. So in another video you said you would recommend a running wheel for female rats. In another blog I read that they can chew the wood and get sharp pieces from it into their tummy and get wounded... but now I am so confused because isn't most of the cage toys for rats made out of wood? Is the wood for the wheel "more dangerous" or would you say this advice was nonsense at all? Thank you (:
@Emiology
@Emiology 2 жыл бұрын
I wouldn’t use a wooden wheel for rats but only because it’s hard to clean and would be ruined quickly. But rats are smart animals and not silly enough to swallow wood when they’re chewing it, if they did accidentally swallow any it would probably be fine as they chew things down into such small pieces.

I found a small mammory tumour on my 20 month old rat and the vets said it's my decision whether to operate or not, she's in good health, overweight. She might be prone as she had a tumour a year ago, maybe hormonal as she still comes into heat. Really difficult decision due to the risks and I only have two left now. When something happens to one of them I wouldn't know where to re-home the one that's left, also that would be so hard
@Emiology
@Emiology 2 жыл бұрын
It's a really hard call and only one that you can make so don't let anyone else feel bad about it. I think my boy was 23 months when his tumour appeared and that was close enough to 2 for me to say no, sometimes I still wonder how much longer he might have had if i had. I know a lot of people will give their rats one lump removal (especially females) and if it returns they say enough is enough i'm not putting them through the surgery again.

@mrscookie8142

My Boys are somewhat similar, even though I've only had them for 3 months. It has helped a lot to give them yogurt from a spoon and when they learned not to bite, just lick, you can let them lick it from your hand. I talk to mine a lot, give them part of their greens out of my hand, give them treats. And something that worked well, always end it with a good memory, even if your rat ran away from your hand let them have a treat. They will soon start to associate your hand with something positive. I am no expert by any means but that has been working for me. Mine dont like to cuddle, but they climb over my hand, onto my shoulder, and onto my head now.

Can you give pukaiten to rat that are two years old

I have two older rats, one is pretty good shape and the other is getting pretty slow and has hind leg degeneration. He doesn't have long left. I have been trying to find rat babies for over 6 months and now I finally found them and I'm gonna go pick them up this week. My Question is if it's unsafe to do introduktions with my old man who's hind leg degeration and if it's to stressful for him? I think he will pass within maybe one month or so. The end is near for him 😭 but should I now hold off from getting these baby rats until he passes? But I then worry it will take me as much time to find new babies again and his cage mate will be alone for the rest of his life? Please advice needed 😭

I'd get them anyway, you'll need a separate cage until they're big enough for introductions and for the introductions itself so put them in a separate cage. The general rule is if a rat is too fragile / unwell for introductions it's likely nearing a point where you'll have to make a quality of life decision if they can't do normal rat things. Best to have other rats now before it happens so you won't be trying to find them again for another 6 months! Saying that I have put rats that have minor HLD through introductions and they've been fine, when the babies are still relatively young they don't pose much of a threat, I just keep a close eye on them that they're not becoming too stressed
