This is my absolute favorite adaption of Emma. Kate Beckinsale is just perfect and she impersonates the emma woodhouse of my imagination with her incredible beauty and grace. Although the movie isn't 100% true to the book, it is wonderful and I love it very much. Also, Mr Knightley is supposed to be in his late thirties and I am so glad the movie showed that so well because in other versions he often seemed much younger. God i love this movie so much

This is by far the best adaptation of Emma. Personally, I dislike the character of Emma in the other adaptations (and in general), but Kate Beckinsale is the feisty Emma who actually makes progress in turning her selfish nature around. And Mark Strong plays an excellent Mr Knightly, who can show a complete range of emotion and is not so bound up in being lofty, unlike those who came before or after. These actors truly inhabited their characters and are especially convincing; other adaptations just can't compare.
'We see him every day, but we're alone at night.' Saucily said, Emma! Very saucily indeed!

Everything about this adaptation is spot on - even Donwell Abbey (which is understood to be a post reformation monastery converted as many were, into a gentry house) looks suitably medieval in this final scene.

This is an excellent version of "Emma." Kate Beckinsale is an outstanding Emma. She captures the essence of Emma. Mark Strong is a perfect Mr. Knightly. All the actors in this film are excellent. I also like the Romola Garai version of Emma. The 1972 version of "Emma" is not well done. The actress who plays Emma is unattractive and does not play Emma well. "Are we to sit down with hobbledehoys?" Nobody does a supercilious ninny like Lucy Robinsonl, The Queen of the Insincere Smile. I love all the barely perceptible ways she expresses disdain for her inferiors (nearly everyone) without saying a single word. She's quite a distance from the camera, so you have to look very closely at about 8:20 to see her contemptuously turn up her nose at Emma when they pass each other on the dance floor. And she wields that parasol so regally it may as well be a sceptre.

I love the good acting found in most movies and series made around the 90s. Thanks for this one too. I find (around 2020) that modern actresses just look, move and emote in the wrong way for such roles. Feminist always have a smug set "smile" on their lips in most movies now - I always have a chuckle at the puffed up lips and modern make up in period movies, the effect is very jarring, it's weird enough now-a-days but is so weird when depicting women back when there were no such cosmetic fiddlings with the face. Most series or films made around the 90s seem to have a good atmosphere compared to the 21st century, up to now in 2022, where the young people seems to be trying to re-arrange the attitudes - it does not work for me - I think the 90s actors were real actors and not just celebrities - perhaps that is what is wrong with most movies and series now. Regards to all.

This is a delightful version and I think it is perhaps the best one although the very long BBC series from the 1970s of course could stuff almost everything in. Sadly the way Emmas contacts with Harriet is a bit too optimisticly described here. As married to a farmer she couldn't be recieved at Emmas home and Jane Austen made that perfectly clear at the last pages. Alas those were the predjudiced days......As a whole, this version is the ideal mix of good music, good acting, atmosphere, details and pace of the story.
@schoo92563 жыл бұрын
I suppose in this case it was for the best anyway, Jane Austen made it pretty clear that neither Harriet nor Emma actually benefited intellectually or character-wise from being friends. Aside from learning a few more refinements to her manners, Harriet was only puffed up and influenced by Emma's snobbery to act against her own best interests, and Emma's arrogance got worse as Harriet was her yes-man and did whatever she said.
@candyapple74452 жыл бұрын
Dubbel Henke. I agree. The engagement party at the end was not in the book but everything else was done perfectly according to the book. Although I enjoyed the engagement party scene, I don’t think anyone in the landowning “station” at that time would have deigned to include the farmers and the peasants in with the estate owner and the upper crust-this was clearly modern democratic ideas imposed on an early 19th century scene. But it made a nice ending and showed that Mr. Knightly and Emma were generous people.

@@candyapple7445 Word. I also love this version; the scene where Emma is scolded for behaving cruelly to Miss Bates is - although she deserved it - so touching. @@amasion2882 It's strange, but I always felt that Mr Knightley went out of his way to put Emma's right to wrong. From the way they were written, Mr Martin and Mr Knightley didn't have a typical dynamic for the time. Mr Martin thought very highly of Mr Knightley and went out of his way to ask for his advice on Harriet. Meaning, if Mr Knightley encouraged it, and promised that Emma wouldn't meddle this time around; Mr Knightley would've mostly likely encouraged him to try once more.

Sometimes I think the story of 'Emma' is hard to put into a modern visual because the humour and characters can seem a bit twee. I really tried with this.I saw it when it came out in the 90s and watching it again, in 2020, I just think the same; I don't like it. It's just not very funny. Bit lack-lustre. Knightley needs to lighten up a bit - he's like a cross headmaster and, much as I adore Kate Beckinsale ...no, not here, too modern. And we don't see scenes where she's kind - tending to the sick. I think that's important. Difficult character to play - Emma is intelligent but full of child-like fantasies. This Emma doesn't look like she'd be remotely interested in who's with who. It's all a bit flat. Sorry guys all of you further down comments scroll. Pleased YOU all enjoyed it tho'!!
@winterblossom95463 жыл бұрын
😐 I think you need to re-read the book. Emma never cared about who’s with who. She found self-satisfaction in matchmaking when she got success the first time, and wanted to do more of it. After Mr. Elton confessed his feelings to Emma, she resolved not to matchmake anymore, because it all went wrong. --- (Chapter 1) “I planned the match from that hour; and when such success has blessed me in this instance, dear papa, you cannot think that I shall leave off match-making.” ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ (Chapter 16) The first error and the worst lay at her door. It was foolish, it was wrong, to take so active a part in bringing any two people together. It was adventuring too far, assuming too much, making light of what ought to be serious, a trick of what ought to be simple. She was quite concerned and ashamed, and resolved to do such things no more. “Here have I,” said she, “actually talked poor Harriet into being very much attached to this man. She might never have thought of him but for me; and certainly never would have thought of him with hope, if I had not assured her of his attachment, for she is as modest and humble as I used to think him. Oh! that I had been satisfied with persuading her not to accept young Martin. There I was quite right. That was well done of me; but there I should have stopped, and left the rest to time and chance. ---

The characters could have more depth. Some of the music was a bit hokey, closer to Mozart would be better.
