I love it, too! I think in the book they didn't argue openly, but Jane Austen already suggests very subtly that he has a drinking problem and soon or later, it will come out together with the frustration of a loveless marriage. i think in the movie they just did it more evident and funny.

I love this scene so much. I love how it starts kinda as a friendly fun, then slowly they start to fall for each other and get lost in their thoughts end each other's eyes, forget to dance and when they catch up, they are both like oh no, what is happening...and all that without a single word, just editing and eye contact. Brilliant!

There are two different things happening. Mr. Knightley is already in love with Emma and it begins to show as he is mesmerized by her. During the dance Emma comes to the realization that she is in love with him and BAM everything clicks together and we see two dancers very much in love with each other - secretly.

No one else said a word about his reaction when she tells him "with you, if you will ask me"...he wasnt prepared for her to want to dance with him...probably wanted it but when she expressed her wish he looked like the ground beneath his feet shook for a second and he was taken aback...suddenly the caring best friend facade was beginning to quiver...and he knew if he dances with her, he will lose his composure. He does maintain it but his face can barely conceal his attraction to her throughout the dance.

@@azkanight871 That was an obvious hyperbole. If you read the whole "declaration" should I say the whole book, it's clear that he fell in love with her (or realized his feelings for her) only after Frank Churchill appeared on the scene. There is that part at the beginning of the book where he says "I should like to see Emma in love, and in some doubt of a return; it would do her good." At that point in time he appears to be sincere. His feelings apparently changed after he was confronted with the reality of losing her to morally dubious Frank Churchill.

I remember watching this movie when it came out because I had read Emma once for my studies and I thought hey, it'll be a nice time pass. I didn't expect to be so impressed. Since then I've watched it a total of 6 times, and the main reason are these 2 and their CHEMISTRY. Gosh, the way he's looking at her. It gave me butterflies. The music is hypnotic and they are in their own world, completely lost in one another. Also this dance has made me forget any other dances exist in period dramas. Johnny Flynn and Anya's chemistry is so brilliant that I wonder how'd they do in a modern love story of some kind.

Not quite. Knightley is in love with Emma at this point in the story, but she is not yet in love with him even though Emma is beginning to see him in a new light (partly as a result of his decision to spare Emma's friend Harriet humiliation by dancing with her). After all, remember that Knightley (who's older than Emma by more than a decade) has been part of Emma's life ever since the beginning and in many ways has served as the wise elder brother she never had. Emma doesn't fully realize her feelings for him until later on when Harriet reveals that she's fallen in love with Knightley herself for saving her from humiliation.

I like how she tells him that she doesn’t see him as a brother and suggest that in a way she IS conscious about their relationship. She thought about him. When she hold on to his hands I thought.. Damn the thirst. Give us all some water.

I have watched this scene and the entire video over and over, enjoying it so much. It is so well done, the actors convey all the awakened and repressed feelings through touch, gaze, body movement and body language so beautifully. They wordlessly (and "glovelessly") reveal to each other (and to the audience) the deep love and desire they have not expressed before. His almost gasp/shaking off/catching of his breath as he turns away and the slight lingering hand on Emma's waist, the whole choreography of coming close and looking deeply into each other's eyes is perfect. Along with the music this scene is extraordinary. Kudos to Johnny Flynn, Anya Taylor-Joy, Autumn de Wilde and the whole cast and crew for this wonderful version of my favorite Austen novel.

《 Darcy: What do you recommend to encourage affection? Elizabeth: Dancing 》 This scene affirms that dance is the best thing to encourage affection, just seeing the touch without gloves and the connection... we see love in the eyes .

A tensão e a paixão entre os dois, a cada tocar de mão e inclinação, a gente sente que eles estão cada vez mais unidos, apaixonados conforme dançam. É perfeitooooooo, corri para ler o livro logo depois do filme.

Emma was doing way too much with this dance. No one else was doing all that. She was giving it her best "come hither" look too, which was throwing Mr. Knightly into confusion. No wonder he chased her home on foot in the next scene. He needed a run.
@YTistooannoying
@YTistooannoying 3 жыл бұрын
That's how the director wanted it to be. That said, Emma is innocent she wasn't aware of her come hither looks. She is simply becoming aware of the depth of her feelings for Mr. Knightley and it is showing on her face. It is not confusion that sends Mr. Knightley after her, but his own love for her and the fact that her reaction filled him with hope that his love for her could finally be requitted. That said, Mr. Knightley, being a very honorable gentleman probably needed to indulge in many runs thanks to Emma.

I have the same interpretation with the strawberry scene. I honestly think she was really just eating when she felt a pair of eyes on her, and then she just happened to meet Mr. Knightley's eyes. She didn't mean to be seductive, but she's rattling Mr. Knightley's composure. If you think about it, it would be in continuity with the peck she initiated in the end--she IS innocent. She has a faint idea of things, but ultimately, it's Mr. Knightley who shows her how things could be, and how they can be so much more than she imagined.

I so so love this scene. Watched it millions of times. The only tiny weeney criticism is that Emma has too much composure and he has very little. Better to see her showing her confusion a bit more. If mr knightley was looking at me like that I’d be jelly!!. Otherwise just Perfect..

Because Emma has not come to the complete realization that she loves him...she has feelings tucked away somewhere within her heart but they're only just surfacing. On the other hand, Knightley is already head over heels in love with her, and this was way too much than he signed up for that day...it's actually really romantic to see him barely keeping it together :)
