CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Emma (Gwyneth Paltrow) and Frank Churchill (Ewan McGregor) sing a duet of Arthur Somervell's "Silent Worship" at the Coles' Party.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Based on the novel by Jane Austen (who in the '90s seemed to be in the running alongside William Shakespeare and Stephen King for the honors of most adapted author in Hollywood), this period romantic comedy stars Gwyneth Paltrow as Emma Woodhouse, a young woman who imagines herself an authority on matters of the heart. With the best of intentions, Emma plays matchmaker for her friends, most notably her friend Harriet (Toni Collette), who Emma links up with the Reverend Elton (Alan Cumming), and her governess, (Greta Scacchi), who she introduces to her future husband, Mr. Weston (James Cosmo). However, Emma is not nearly as good at playing Cupid as she likes to imagine, and she spends so much time trying to solve everyone else's romantic problems that it takes her quite some time to realize that she's fallen in love with Mr. Knightly (Jeremy Northam). A television miniseries based on Austen's book appeared a year later, while a year prior to Emma, the story appeared in modernized form in the popular teen comedy Clueless.

Silent Worship - Lyrics Did you not hear my lady Go down the garden singing? Blackbird and thrush were silent To hear the alleys ringing O saw you not my lady Out in the garden there? Shaming the rose and lily For she is twice as fair Though I am nothing to her Though she must rarely look at me And though I could never woo her I love her till I die Surely you heard my lady Go down the garden singing? Silencing all the songbirds And setting the alleys ringing But surely you see my lady Out in the garden there Rivalling the glittering sunshine With a glory of golden hair

I haven’t checked all the comments so my comment may be a repeat, but this adaptation of an aria from Haendel’s opera ‘Tolomeo’ is by Arthur Somerville and is entitled ‘Silent Worship’, but was published in 1928; over an hundred years after the fictitious event is set!

He was on a list of potential actors for the part, but he still had to come in an audition for it. He sang a U2 song for it, but his voice was absolutely destroyed because he was doing a play at the time and was a heavy smoker and drinker. he even said the audition was pretty bad, but Baz liked something he did and gave him the part. i think Baz just has a really good eye for casting swoon-worthy leading men.

LOL I really dont think she was half bad myself, yes, Jane was better than she, but Emma wasnt bad at all, either! I thought it was rather cute how he kind of ribbed her about her performance "No your playing was lovely! very ... elegant" An awesome scene and very well acted by all.

Frankly, Jane's playing and singing may be better technically, but she completely lacks feeling (which is like it's written in the book, and both actresses play their roles perfectly here - you can even hear that Miss Paltrow could sing better, if she wasn't supposed to be playing an amateur). But I don’t like Mr McGregor's voice at all, sorry folks. Even if I am the only one not fan-girling here 😅

@@Digeroo123 True! Though according to Wikipedia, the original Handel aria was written down in Austen's own songbooks. So she was probably familiar with the tune... just not Sommervell's version of it, which came over a hundred years later. I thought they did a nice job of working it into the story... And Paltrow and McGregor did a credible job of singing it (her more so than him, IMO).

Love this scene! the beginning when Mr. Cole asks Emma to play and she whisply replies "Oh but I lack the talent...!" forgetting I think for a moment that she now has someone to compete with (as Mr. Knightley said earlier "maybe you dislike her because she diverts our attentions from you?"), and was quickly reminded when he's all like "Perhaps I'll ask Miss Fairfax?". She agrees to play, partly because she doesnt want to be shown up in front of her friends in "her house" so to speak, but mostly because at this point in the story, she views Jane as competition for Mr. Knightley; even though she hasnt acknowledged or admitted her feelings for him to herself as of yet. Knightley OTOH finds himself jealous, though I am not sure if he is aware WHY he is jealous at this point. It was clear he was worried about Frank from the beginning because when Emma is talking about meeting Jane at the Bates', she mentions that "she wouldnt tell me anything about Frank Churchill!" to which Knightley replies "why would you care about Frank Churchill" and even that early on, his Jealousy was evident. What I think happened is if you pay attention, you will see that in the beginning of the movie, Knightley and Mrs. Weston are shown talking, Knightley also mentions that the Westons correspond regularly, so maybe they told him something about their wishes that Frank and Emma be attached? There is no way to know for sure since it is not touched upon in the movie, but if pressed I would say that's what happened.

Somervell's English adaptation of Handel’s aria was done more than a century after Austen's 1815 novel, but the original Italian aria was recorded in Jane Austen's own handwritten songbooks. But as Emma is fiction she may as well sing the song anyway!

The lyrics of "Silent Worship" are by Arthur Somerville in 1928! The original is an aria of Handel's opera "tolomeo" (1728, italian style and language).
