Emma Kok shines in Leonard Cohen’s classic gospel ballad, Hallelujah. It's. difficult song, for various reasons, but with Emma's life experiences and deep feeling for the music, she makes it very special.
Check out this Jeff Buckley divine interpretation.

The charming little girl of three years ago, has, since Andre Rieu's support, become a beautiful, confident young woman who owns everything she sings. Her professionalism is amazing. I have never known so many Reactors respond so favourably to a teenage singer. The approval of the Bangkok Voice Coach is perhaps the highest professional commendation she could have.

She is an amazing young lady and I really enjoyed your reaction and analysis. One thing I haven't seen in the comments from most reactors is the fact that she is singing in English. Last time I watched her singing Viola in French even though she doesn't speak French. She learned to sing it phonetically. I wonder if she speaks English or if she same this one the same way, phonetically. Either way, she did an amazing job on both songs I've heard. She's incredible.

Thank you so much for your reaction and analysis of this song by Emma Kok! Like many, I have become possessed with her. I think it's because, like you said, her amazing courage and stamina in spite of everything she has been through already in life. I agree with you that she does close her eyes a lot during this song, but it is only to focus on her ability to communicate emotion. In her "Voila" performance, her eyes are open much of the time and it feels like she is singing to every individual there and looking into their soul! She has a beautiful smile, too, as I've seen in many videos of her. She is very versatile in every respect! Definitely one to keep watching as she matures over the years. I will also keep watching your reactions to her.

I agree with cola1155. I find this song much more personal, to me it is all about the inner experience. Voila was definitely more externalization of an experience. I love your posts William. please continue. I look forward to your ideas

First: I have watched Emma sing Voila SO many times. Watching different people react to her! She's absolutely angelic!! I really hope she goes far in her singing career! And Second: (Nothing to do with music or singing at all). So my Momma passed away 4 months ago. I miss her So Very Much! I was her full time caregiver as she suffered dementia 😭💔. Anyways, she had big beautiful blue eyes just like you. Seeing you smiling & the twinkle in your eyes, is what she always had. I didn't realize how much I missed seeing them until I watched you. Anyways, sorry for the rant. Thanks for your reaction videos. ❣️

About the eyes, you are right but, EMMA is a singer who adapts to each song. In "Voilà" she closed her eyes just when necessary. In "White Christmas" she never closed her eyes! Here, she closed her eyes only in the soft part (angelic voice). I think she went deep into her soul.

I am a big fan of the song as it was written, but I really hate it when it gets modified for Christmas or Easter. Or when it is sung by a children's choir with changed lyrics to remove the adult content, and the depth and meaning get sacrificed. My favourite version is KD Lang's cover. I don't think I ever sing with my eyes closed. Maybe I should try it sometime.@@BangkokVoiceCoach

Although I watch your reviews, I have to admit I only have eyes for Emma at the moment. She inspires me to cope with my own adversities in my old age, and I love her like my own. @@exeter1588 You are far from alone in your feelings, her ability to find empty places deep in the core of a person, and perfectly fill that void is beyond incredible, but somehow, that's exactly what she does, with every performance we get to see, regardless of genre. It has to be played from two differerent user captures, so they don't have Andre's professional polish on them, but regardless of that, her recent performance in German of Ein Bisschen Frieden she starts it with a cheeky smile, and a raised finger for quiet, and almost a trade mark at this stage, perfect a capella for the first verse, then Andre brings in the orchestra, then the chorus, and adds the sopranos and tenors, and if that wasn't enough, we then get a verse from Emma in counter harmony. It's another short piece, but sublime in how it showcases Emma's range of talents and skills, she truly is exceptional. In 15 years of watching Andre, I've never seen him use techniques like this, he clearly saw just how capable and powerful Emma is, and is more than happy to give her the opportunity to shine like this, . kzfaq.infoi-eX4AGKbIM kzfaq.info/get/bejne/l6ldhNeKx622n3k.html I am so much looking forward to whatever surprise they put together for Ireland in May, there's now 2 concerts in Dublin, and I think we can be sure there will be a special for Emma here in Ireland, and with how she's soaring to new heights with every performance, it will be a good performance, that's for sure. There's only one thing that could spoil this scenario, and that's Emma's health, when I looked a lot more closely at some of the interviews she's done, and read all of her gastrostars site, it's clear that while there's no hint even in her performances, her health is balanced at times on a knife edge, a couple of flights of stairs with her bag containing the pumps is about her endurance limit, and even for long walks, she will sometimes use an assistance chair, it was there in her dressing room in Amsterdam when she did the TV interview, we already know her stamina is limited, which is of course why she's on the pumps for such a long period of time every day, and if that were to change, it could dramatically affect her ability to perform like she does. I crossed swords with another user in recent days when I corrected a false statement about Emma supposedy having an artificial stomach, she responded quite agressively, and concluded I'm a google scouring troll, which I have to admit amused me more than some, but as a result of that, I went looking into some of the youtube videos on Gastroparesis that are not Emma related, and what I found only served to make even more clear the enormous challenges that Emma deals with literally on an every day and hour by hour basis, a young lady with gastroparesis ( among a significant number of other issues) was very open about how she is dealing with it, and when you see what Emma's phrase of 'Mickey button' really means, and the work that's involved in even a short term disconnection from it in order for her to perform, it brings home why even now, she struggles to cope with the feeding tubes, it's an incredibly demanding and challenging regime to be tied to, and yet she never lets those issues and strains affect her persona, and how she appears in everything she's doing. The more I watched, the more impressed I am with how amazing the job her parents and that whole family have done truly is, helping Emma through all of the challenges and helping her retain the incredibly personality she has, that is a massive credit to that whole family. That said, and each patient is different, and the two I looked at in the States had multiple other conditions, the awful reality is that both of them have passed away in their 20's, which was a very hard and sobering thought, I really have to hope that Emma's foundation really does have some success in finding either more effective treatments, or even better a cure for her illness, I guess I'd never stopped to think too much about the more serious implications of her illness, and when I did, it wasn't an easy train of thought. I guess all we can do for now is trust that the joy and happiness and mental strength that Emma gets from living her dream gives her the ongoing abilty and physical strength to beat this awful illness and remain strong, I know we can trust Andre to look after her while she's touring with him, and also give her the gentle guidance she needs to avoid being over stretched by any other opportunities.

Hi Steve, I've read a couple of comments in the past couple of weeks where someone claimed that Emma had what they called an 'artificial stomach', essentially a plastic bag attached to her hip. I don't believe that is true, but I didn't comment and just skipped over. I too have watched a couple of videos from young women here in the states who also suffer from gastroparesis. There are quite a few such videos actually. I do admire all these young women, and a couple of young men, for their fortitude and determination to make a life for themselves in spite of the suffering they endure on a daily basis. Much of it is psychological which makes their efforts that much more heroic. It's just heartbreaking to see what they go through. It doesn't seem the medical community here is any further along in their understanding of the causes of the disease and its treatment than they are in the Netherlands. It's just so sad. I feel very foolish that many of my comments speak of Emma in the future as a great young star who will one day establish herself as one of the world's premier female vocal artists, as if nothing was wrong. It causes me great distress to think that things could get worse, and that she could be taken away from us at any time. Worse is the thought that she fully understands the precariousness of her situation. I don't know if I could bear the psychological stress if it was me. I am not a particularly religious man, but I do pray for her everyday, as I know many others do as well. I'm glad to have this opportunity to speak to you. There is something I want to ask you about. I know you are a donor to Gastrostars, as I have been since last Nov. I always get a email receipt for my donation that also thanks me for donating, but that is all. I signed up for Emma's Newsletter in the hope that I would be kept up to date on Emma's condition and any progress the foundation was making, but I have received nothing. I am completely in the dark. I can find no way to contact them beyond replying to the receipt email, but I have never received a reply. I know Gastrostars has only been up and running for less than a year, and they are probably still working things out and getting organized, yet I was hoping for a bit more. Do you have any insight into this situation? Have you ever received her Newsletter? @@stevecgarry

@@exeter1588 I've started this reply several times, the first time on the phone I gave up, just too many typos, and the user interface is dire, and then having got quite a way in a bit later on the laptop using a proper keyboard, real life got in the way, a phone call from the local police station about the overdue renewal of a firearm licence, I have a muzzle loading flintlock musket that gets used without lead ball in it for re-enactments of things like the 1690 Battle of the Boyne, in full Williamite or Jacobite uniform, and they've managed to lose the paperwork for the renewal, but their response to that is to threaten taking the musket away because it's not licensed, despite me delivering the paperwork in person to the local station last June, 2 months before the renewal was due, so that managed to well distract me for several hours, and I closed the computer by mistake, so lost the reply that I'd started, and now, at last, I'm back in 'Emma' mode, and I will try to respond to you, though I have to admit to finding it hard to put my thoughts into coherent words, this rabbit hole turned into a very dark place for a while, I don't have the same faith in prayer that I used to, life has thrown too many curve balls at us. I'm not sure I want to get into a fur fight with the poster that's putting up wrong information about Emma, because I've no connection or link to Emma as such, I can't get KZfaq involved in taking posts down or similar, they won't work like that on third party reports, and the poster concerned was more than hostile when I tried to correct her, and I'm not about to put my account at risk over something like this, KZfaq can get very difficult at times, so my best hope is that the poster who's wrong will discover that she's wrong, and either go away, or change her attitude. I don't think that any of us thought too deeply about Emma's life expectancy when she first burst on to the scene, I know I didn't, I got hit deep and hard by her performance of Voila, and even now, she gives no indication in anything she's said about any concerns in that respect, and there is no visble signs of any problems, there's no lack of vitality in any of the performances I've seen. but counter to that thought is that a key member of the team at gastrostars has been forced to give up working as a surgeon because her condition worsened, clearly gastroparesis can have awful implications for the people afflicted by it. Having had to stop and think about it, and now being more aware of some of these facts helps to explain why Emma has such a laser like focus on her aims and direction, we already knew she's driven, and I begin to wonder if some of the strength of that drive is the background thought that her abilty to perform may be compromised or even stopped at some stage if her own situation is affected, it would be tragic if that were to happen, and I have to admit to feeling some deep pain at the realisation that we might not be able to enjoy the incredible skill she has for as long as we had thought, and even worse that Emma's future might not be what we all hope for, that was a dark and sobering moment, and I'm still not really through it, but that's my problem to resolve, and I have to admit that I wonder how Emma copes with those sorts of thoughts, she has to have them, and continuing to be as positive as she is so much of the time is an incredible acheivement to add to the long list of achievements she's already coped with. If I lived nearer, I suspect I'd be spending a lot of my free time trying to help the gastrostars team acheive their aims, but at this distance, it's not going to happen, so the best I can do is exactly what I am, spread the word about Emma and the foundation as widely as possible and encourage as many people as possible to support them, I have no way to know how successful that has been, but it is better than doing nothing. On the subject of newsletters, I suspect that Emma and her mother have been caught up in a whirlwind of change that neither of them anticipated, and they are key members of the foundation's structure, while Emma was desperately looking for a way forward as a singer, I don't think she was expecting to get so enmeshed and deeply involved with Andre so quickly, let alone be travelling the world with him so soon, and I'd hazard a guess that they've had very little time in this last few months to be closely involved with what's happening with the foundation, and the other factor is that we've no way to know how the health problems that have affected the doctor have played out, it may be that she too has not been able to give the time and involvement she was planning because of her own gastroparesis issues, so while it would be good to have a newsletter and updates, it may well be the case that they're not yet achieving as much as they'd hoped to be able to. That's not perhaps the answer you were hoping for, but it's the best I've got for now. It won't affect my regular giving to them, but yes, it would be good to be seeing some updates on their web site, and a bit of news. Sorry that this is a bit long and heavy, I guess the dark side of this particular branch of the rabbit hole has got to me more than I realised.

Emma made this version her own and i have no issues with the changes and its 100 % Emma. She does indeed close her eyes a lot, but I think that also has to do with the fact that there was no audience at the recording of this TV program. If you watch the recordings of 'Voila' with Helene Fischer, you see that she has her eyes open a lot, just like during the live Christmas concerts with Andre Rieu.

William, I love your comments thoughts and insight about Emma, both in terms of this performance and her wider involvement with other songs. I've said it elsewhere, the first time Emma sang Voila on the Vrijthof stage with Andre, that first live performance of the new version of Voila changed her, in so many ways, it is summed up so clearly in her earlier single release LAAT MIJ EEN VLINDER ZIJN , let me be a butterfly, that night, her dream came true. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/nb-la5mqrrOcmWg.html You need to see the translation that's been added to this version to understand the deep emotion, it's every bit as emotional as Voila, especially as she sings a section, around 2:10 in, 'if only for a day, or even for a count of ten, I'd just like to live as another', and you will then see a gentle shake of her head, the pain in her eyes, the recognition of the awful reality of her situation, and then her head goes down to silence for a moment. Then she rises, physically and in the song she soars to an even greater height, as much as to say, 'This is NOT going to beat me, or define me, I WILL rise above it', an incredibly emotional moment, it was written for her, an expression of her dream, and that first night at the Vrijthof, which is also the video that's went viral, (32 million views and counting still ) Emma changed, and now, with Andre, her future is so much larger than I think even she dreamed it might be, she's still coming to terms with just how much that is the case. Mentally, her dream became reality that night, it happened for her, in the words of another song she's sung, 'Some people wait a lifetime for a moment like this', and while she physically walked out on to that stage, mentally, she was the beautiful butterfly emerging from the long period of change, the chrysalis emerged from the cocoon and soared high and free over the stage. Emma mentally went up with it, and she absolutely dominated that stage, the orchestra and the audience, and that was the first time she had performed the new version, she was truly inspired, because of how much the words of Voila mean to her, it's been her life in so many ways, whenever she performs that song, it's deep, and the new version with Andre gave her the time and space to do more than perform it, she LIVED it on that stage, and that was so evident. Andre had worked his showmans magic, Emma was no longer a comptent powerful girl singer, the new Emma emerged and soared, she came out on to that stage visibly and emotionally a beautiful, strong, powerful, serene, composed, competent, driven and dedicated young woman, her star rose, and shone bright in the sky. The only reason that Andre and the orchestra were not shedding tears at the power of that performance was because they'd shed plenty of them during rehearsals, and had steeled themselves to control those emotions during the performances, Andre said as much in a TV interview at the time. I think it will be a very long time before anybody comes even close to performing Voila with the power, emotion and passion that Emma gave it that night, every part of her was totally invested in that performance, and she went on to do another 11 performances during July, and every one of them got at least a minute of standing ovation. As she hit that top note at the end, her smile said it all, she knew she'd absolutely nailed it, but then just for a moment, the 15 year old girl came out again, with arms wide, she looked at her mentor, Andre, with a look that said 'How was that?' His eyes, his smile, the embrace, the one word, 'Fantastic', the standing ovation from everybody, including the orchestra, and the call to come back out and accept the audience reaction, they all said it, she absolutely delivered what Andre had recognised she was capable of. We've been treated to a feast of new work from Emma in recent weeks, and it''s very evident that we're seeing the new Emma, between Andre's Christmas concerts, where she was much more involved, and the other events, she's becoming very much more visible at the moment, and I'm actually happy she's with Andre for the next year, if not longer, if anyone can really help her develop into the superstar that she truly is, yet also make sure that she's not destroyed by the nasty side of the music industry, it's Andre and his extended family, and I know from watching Andre for many years that he very much recognises her potential, and he will gently but firmly push her to greater heights than she dreamed possible, and so far, she's responded and delivered, and she'll continue to do that, but with the protection of being under Andre's wings. In 15 years, I don't think I can remember another guest coming on to stage and starting to sing a capella without so much as a prompt note or introduction, Emma's rendering of 'White Christmas' recently is sublime, the first verse is just pure Emma, absolutely no support, so soft and gentle yet powerful, you could have heard a pin drop, she so captivated that huge audience, and then Andre again wove his magic as first the orchestra, then the sopranos and the tenors all join in, and then he winds it right down again to let Emma finish it out, magnificant showmanship that also gave Emma the spotlight she so deserves. The link that follows is the longer version kzfaq.info/get/bejne/f65geMimnpm6n5s.html The other thing I'll make you aware of is a short (2 minute) video in Dutch (sorry), I won't spoil the surprise, just warn you to have tissues handy, it's emotional, and there's an explanation in the first few comments that are attached, it's a very clear demonstration of just how much Andre cares for the people who work with him, and now also for Emma. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/m9CdgJOIztHRoWg.html I will close with a plea, to anyone who's enjoying Emma's rise to stardom, if you can, please consider making a (regular) donation to her foundation, gastrostars.nl It might be the means of assisting them to find treatments or even a cure that will free Emma and others like her from the awful regime of 22 hours a day tied to the pumps that are so restrictive, and Emma freed from even some of that awful regime will be so worth watching, it's clear she can rise to cope with any genre, and she does it so beautifully, and makes it look so simple to do, there's never any evidence of any strain or stress in her singing, I'd like to hope we'll be seeing and enjoying her making wonderful music for a very long time to come.

Thanks for your interesting comments. Yes, her eyes were closed a lot, she never does that, as far as I have seen. Might it be the lack of an audience and a not so interesting studio to look at? Maybe it is easier for a 15-year old to concentrate with the eyes closed in these circumstances.

Hi William. Thank you for this beautiful reaction. Personally for me the orchestra and the choir did not do this beautiful song justice enough. If you like this version, I can recommend the version she did earlier on her regional television network. A very intimate setting in a living room with only a piano. In that one Emma's pure and beautiful voice truly shines (no distracting guitars or choir!). I'm sure you'll enjoy it very much! you can find it here: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/eblkjaaoz9bPkqs.htmlsi=1NVoo9Gr5VZfD26a

I'm nitpicking, but would like to see some more vocal dynamic in the arrangement/phrasing or what you call it in certain parts, that would take her to the next level. Maybe work with dutch singer/vocal coach Floor Jansen from Nightwish 😉

@BangkokVoiceCoach William, It's clear that Emma has found a way into your heart, and rightly so, I'm going to suggest you take a look at a video she did earlier this year, and by the look of it, this was a home recorded karaoke video, no audience, just her, a sound track and a microphone, she did a cover of a Disney film, the song is part of your world, a cover of halle Berry. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/n9qoppCSs9-2eo0.html She comments that it means a lot to her because it's talking about being able to move away from the life experience that is every day, so close to her own heart,

Hi William. Another brilliant review of Emma with Hallelujah. Your experience creates wonder. I've heard your voice, and now I'm in awe. Emma posted a P.S. clip to Voila, detailing her view of God, re. her affliction. Sadly, it was uncomplementary. It's been taken down. It disturbed me, so I subscribed to her channel. I commented: 'Well done, Next song must be Big, and please don't lose your faith.' Hallelujah has done it. It's Bigger, more intense than Voila, and her shortened, slow rendition, eyes closed, hands poised, she simulates a fervent prayer. Has she changed, and held to her faith? I hope so. Leonard Cohen doubted God's existence, and he was troubled and wayward. He may have viewed this song as a kind of prayer for forgiveness, as King David was once forgiven, although he was an adulterer and an accessory to murder. Perhaps Leonard's song would be appeasing, and bring him like forgiveness. I sympathise. Hallelujah appears 4 times in Bible book of Revelation as Alleluia, and means Praise Jah, or Yah, an abbreviation for God's personal name, found in Psalm 83 verse 18. In the A.V. K.J. Bible. It seems to be a term of endearment in approaching God, one of praise and thanks. If this is how Emma uses it in her song, then I am truly impressed. I hope this info complements yours. Thank you William. This is John in London.

John, I don’t think Cohen’s Hallelujah is about God. It’s about sex, mortality, forgiveness, regret. The title has confused so many people. I even once was asked to sing it at a funeral!!! Jeff Buckley recorded the best version, by a country mile. He sings every note as though he is …… (finally word removed.)

I agree Jeff Buckley did one of the best if not the best version of this however John Cale of Velvet Underground fame did an extraordinary version that rivals Buckleys.

Totally agree! I was thinking about this after I made the video. I realise why it’s such a difficult song. Because it’s a POEM, not a song. If you try to sing it, it doesn’t work. It’s all about the lyricism of the poetry. The music needs to be secondary. 🎵

Emma has done a great job here. But.... I have to say that in my view she has changed the song a bit too much. My favourite version remains the rendition Lucy Thomas from the UK has done a few years ago, when she was 16. Lucy did follow the orginal more than Emma does. Again: great job from Emma, but not my favourite.
