There's a small piece of music at the beginning of this clip. Really, it's just this moment I wanted to upload but the context might have seemed unsatisfying. I just love those moments where Emma Peel is investigating as Laurie Johnson's familiar pieces of incidental music underline the nature of her investigation. It's not that the underlining is necessary for our understanding, it's just that it adds to a strangely happy mood. Johnson's music feels like one of the happiest mementos from childhood. Stepping into a world fraught with dangers from which there is absolute certainty of emerging unscathed.
The joy of 'The Cybernauts' for me, whenever it was I first saw it was that it seemed to be the meeting point between the wonders of those investigative shows and the monsters of 'Dr Who'. When you grow up loving a piece of entertainment, it's tempting to want it to go on forever. I might have once thought this of 'The Avengers' but one of the blessings of 'The Avengers' is that unlike 'Dr Who' or 'James Bond', it was never forced to adjust itself to the modern world. It wasn't even forced to adjust itself to adjust to the reality of its own time. This is why it remains timeless.

The camera work on the Avengers was always marvelous! All those tight close-up shots. Someone had a very good eye for framing the scene. Especially Diana Rigg as Emma. Easy on the eyes, to be sure.

Absolutely. So true. There is a real sharp elegance to every shot in series 4. I love every series of 'The Avengers' including ''The New Avengers' which some seem to despise but this series is, for me, the most perfect, not least, that beautiful black and white film. I have tried, in other videos, decolourising moments from series 5 and 6 and that sharpness is definitely missing.

Diana Rigg later admitted the first "Cybernauts" episode did make her uncomfortable, seeing the large man dressed up as a robot. I was surprised that the main Cybernaut was also in "Raiders of The lost Ark" the large Sherpa swordsman who Indy shot and the same actor played the large shirtless German Indy fought with who had an interaction with an airplane propeller. Pat Roach a very large British actor one year older than Dame Diana. It was only a few months later that he performed again in the "Return of the Cybernauts" in color. The Avengers episodes seemed to be broadcast in almost random order, not in the order which they were filmed. 5 of the Emma Peel episodes were not broadcast in the US until 1990 because of censorship, mainly the show was considered too violent although several episodes were also too sexually explicit (particularly whipping a woman) for the mid-west..

That is amazing information. I knew none of this. The truth is that there was so much work for stunt men and big guys in the sixties and early seventies. Dave Prowse was in hundreds of episodes of TV show before he rose to fame as the Green Cross Man. And it has always surprised me that they managed to find an actor who towered over Rigg for the chief cybernaut as she was not a short woman. It is little bits of information like this that I live for. Thank you.

@@dreamsofprojectedlight Diana Rigg was indeed very tall. I have never found her true height she was supposedly 5'8" but appeared much taller. I just watched "Touch of Brimstone" recently with those large heels she towered over everyone. I was surprised at the shows held due to censorship, like "A Surfeit of H20" supposedly Diana Rigg was whipped in it which was unnaceptable in the US. I don't remember any significant whipping scenes.

@@user-vj2wt7jh7j I don't remember this either but then people were always doing one kind of terrible thing to her or another. She always seemed to get away unscathed and without any signs of trauma. Particularly disturbing was when she was tied to the track of a small train.

@@dreamsofprojectedlight By today's standards "The Avengers" was pretty tame. "Touch of Brimstone" was the only episode I can understand was considered offensive. That episode seemed to be filmed with what appears to be a 24mm lens to make Rigg appear more voluptuous. The outfit in "Honey for the Prince" when she did the dance of the six veils was much more revealing and she appeared much thinner. I thought it was cute when she had to pull up her bottom because of the tiny bit of crack showing.

@@dreamsofprojectedlight I watched "Surfeit of H2O", I believe what offended censors was the scene where Emma Peel was tied down in the hydraulic grape press. It seemed like whoever was in charge of filming did enjoy tying Diana Rigg up for whatever reason, and the cameraman she noted did seem to linger on her feet/ankles, was an ancestor of Quentin Tarantino involved? I know Benedict Cumberbatch's mother was in an episode as a nurse.

I always think with this story, the one main "error" I notice every time I watch is in this extract: Steed loosely tucks the tracking pen quickly into cybernaut 2's overalls instigating its fight with cybernaut 1. After all that subsequent thwacking from both cybernauts, the winner is then able to take the pen from exactly where Steed placed it. How impossible would it be that it had stayed in place through all that? Cybernaut 2 (maintenance) has a pocket in its overalls, so Steed could have put it there instead and it MIGHT just have stayed in position through the fight. What a pity they didn't do that. I'm being very nitpicky, of course. It's a great episode in a great series, and any inconsistencies observed can and should be overlooked. :-)

Empty boxes were a necessary part of every TV action show back in the day. It gave stuntmen something to fall into.

@@dreamsofprojectedlight Yes, of course. Back in the day we did not notice things like that though. The quality of the drama was all that mattered. All these years later, there is nothing 'cheesy' about this action, really.

@@lorenzbroll0101 I agree. I still watch these TV shows today. Patrick Macnee is nearly always doubled, even hopping into a car and as we watch in bluray, we can see it more than when watching on old TVs, but it never matters because his delivery and good humour gives more value than someone who can do triple somersaults. I am always impressed by the modern films and their clever effects and stuntwork but my attention starts to wander after a few minutes. With shows like 'The Avengers' and 'The Saint' my attention is always held. I am always involved in what is happening.

@@dreamsofprojectedlight Sometimes you see all sorts of 'mistakes' in this filming - I know. We can spot them easy today. But back in the day, what carried most of the narrative was the committed actors. Most of them had the previous hard life of performing on stage twice a day live, so learnt a very disciplined and difficult craft.
