I love her. Going around looking for Martinis, saying that everyone in Britain is drunk all the time and so on😂 Don't know if you've seen it, but in one interview with Mindy Kaling (for Late Night) they read out reviews to each other and had to guess the movie. Mindy read: 'Emma Thompson is totally wasted in this movie' And Emma: Meaning that I'm absolutely all filled all the way through? Of course it meant she wasn't used well, but I simply LOVE the thought😂😂

One of the funniest, most successful actresses, “I see sexism everywhere!” Well, then give up your position and work as a grip. Did you notice that those 30 men were probably the ones doing all the heavy lifting, light rigging, cable running, and boring old budgets? If that’s sexist start getting woman to apply to be a grip or a gaffer.

Ok, one criticism, because I like Emma, but how can a higher number of men on a set than women be sexist? If shes saying there should be more women because of quotas, and positive discrimination, I'm disabled but I wouldn't want a job because I'm disabled, I'd want it because I'm the best for the job. No one should get a place on the set because of their gender, they should get that chance because they're the best for the job.
@BlankCanvas88
@BlankCanvas88 4 жыл бұрын
I agree. It's really hard to know based on the little information given. It's also possible that less women want to be in show biz. That, again, is really hard to measure.
@lorenagagamonster
@lorenagagamonster 4 жыл бұрын
I think you're reading way too much in a simple statement and putting words Emma never said in her mouth. A 88% male set is most likely related to sexism; the same way a kindergarden with 88% female staff is ALSO due to sexism. She wasn't commenting on how that could be fixed, she just observed that it exists. In an ideal world where gender differences were bodily differences and nothing else, that imbalance would probably not be quite as big, even if still not 50x50.
@heatherd7353
@heatherd7353 4 жыл бұрын
There are circumstances where the people in the room are not the best and just the default some examples: Stephen Colbert once said even when he requested diversity in his writer's room, there were 8 women out of 150 in the candidate list given to him. He had to impose his own quota to just be able to see their work, he was then given 87 women to choose from. When people get called out for having a lack of women a common excuse is we couldn't find any, a UK campaigner Caroline Criado Perez responded to that once when a program used 2 male guests to discuss periods and then the next day had another 2 males on to discuss breast exams, she found hundreds of female medical professionals in half an hr who were willing to be interviewed. Myself, once I was involved in a marketing campaign that was going to be used in a very multicultural area and so we asked for diversity in the models 10 white blonde women were what we were given. There's an added problem in Hollywood because of agents and the quoting system they use for pay negotiations. A bit of a catch-22 where agents get 10% and men earn more so the agents push more to get their men in the role, men therefore get more offers to negotiate giving them more quotes that they use to prove their worth and negotiate higher pay next time. I get why people don't like quotas but the systems in place at the moment aren't all meritocracies.
@ozvoyager
@ozvoyager 4 жыл бұрын
I've worked in film & TV for 30 years and actively worked to get more women - especially directors - on set. The truth is the work doesn't appeal to a lot of women. First, because the hours simply don't work for anyone with children. But also the hours are necessarily long and hard, and the conditions are often terrible. You're out in all weather, often drenched to the skin or freezing, often (especially on low-budget productions) with only the most basic facilities. A lot of men don't want to work under those conditions. But three times as many women don't. And 90% of the female directors I've worked with will lobby hard for a job, train hard, then do two or three gigs before retreating to theatre, advertising, production, or some other area with sensible hours and no great hardships.
@lorenagagamonster
@lorenagagamonster 4 жыл бұрын
@@ozvoyager There are plenty of actresses that seem to work fine in those conditions. Why not women in other areas? Besides, if there are fewer women on these jobs, then any who are by default are more noticeable (you would pay more attention to what they do or don't). A man quitting because of his family is not a big deal when there are 80 of them on a set, but a woman, when there are 3 others, is. Besides, another gender stereotype that might contribute is the idea that women are more responsible for the children. Why mothers give up on their work for their kids more often than fathers do? I think any reasonable person understands how that is most likely related to sexism.

If 30 men and 4 women on set is sexism, then isn't is also sexism where women out number men (such as social workers)? Or that women gain a privileged position gaining child custody? What about dangerous manual labour occupations... where women are simply not choosing to take those jobs (such as Sweden where no country has done more to force equality) ? Merely being on a film set outnumbered by men does not constitute sexism. Most film crews are doing manual labour and tech work, and having worked in the film and television industry for 25 years I can confirm that females on film sets (actors aside) are mostly drawn to the administrative production side. So whilst there maybe more men on the actual set, there are more women in the production office. These are free choices made by those women and they tend not to want to be _grips_ and _sparks_ etc. E T is a virtue signaller. Abhorrent.

it kinda is though, women are discouraged to pressue certain jobs and so are men. In heavy physical labor it makes sense, but often it is simply done out of an inheret bias that has nothing to do with the actuall abilities or someone and where there is no real link to their gender. Programming had been a female dominated job, now the bias is women can't be competend at technologie and should not be interessted in it. Men are distrusted when it comes taking care of children, parents at times outright getting agressiv towords male kindergardners! Women at the other hand get encouraged from a young age to nuture . . . that inequaliy in taken job comes only down to personal preference is plain wrong.
@Avidcomp
@Avidcomp 2 жыл бұрын
@@SingingSealRiana Nonsense for a few decades now. Who is "discouraging" ? And why does that matter if an individual were discouraging. I've been discouraged from attempting certain things throughout my whole life. I just don't let them affect MY choices. In schools girls have not been encouraged to nurture for 3 decades now. On the contrary, it has become socially encouraged not to worry about having children in the west. But again. You have your own mind. It would be a different matter if there were legal obstacles. Then I would stand with you against them. My personal experience with engineer minded women among men, is that they were warmly received. And because I never witnessed any discouragement there I can't cite that as a factor, but knowing all the people I would best guess that if a man started to "bully" or belittle the woman, those chaps I worked with and knew well would take that "bully" aside and give them a serious talking to for upsetting the work environment they were enjoying and their respect for Ms X. I would have to. The last 12-15 years as far as I can make out has seen not a celebration of more opportunities, but a reversal in thinking to push the agenda of victimhood. I say, it is they who are doing more damage and undoing how well things have moved forward. One can call it "hatred of the good for being the good" if you like. It's disgusting.

That last account of sexism.....isn't really sexiest, 30 men on a film set isn't like a manager saying right I don't too many women on set, get rid of the excess......its more likely just a preference of job role, not many women are probably thinking right I want to be a camera operator for a film, because its a shitty job and the women are wanting something more out of life
