While it underwhelming, I do think it fits with who Paddy is, which is why everything Chas has done to keep this secret like ruining her relationship with Aaron and planning to run away and keep Paddy from his child never really made sense. There was no reason she couldn't just have told Paddy the truth and then shared custody with him (even if they moved out of the village).
