My giant sunflowers have spent the summer growing and reaching towards the sky. Today I'm going to try seasoning and roasting the entire head to see what it's all about. Also, we'll talk inflorescence. #sunflowerhead #sunflower

*Ahhhhhh!!!!! My favorite crazy auntie* would always grow mammoth sunflowers! She’d tell us they were *Fairy Apartments* and would let all of us kids pick a flower that we would be the *”Fairy Landlords/Caretakers”* of!! Once we found one we liked, she’d tie “our color” ribbon onto (after writing the “apartment complex name” we picked) our flower..... the rest of the grow season we were responsible for feeding, watering, de-weeding and anything else our *”fairy tenants”* needed us to do! As I grew up, I later realized that old tradition was mostly done as an *absolutely brilliant* way our family would start to teach us little ones how to work on the farm, how to care for the crops and basic farm/plant ecology _{for context: one side of my family all live/d on farms around each other and every farm grew a few different things-that would be harvested/stored/shared amongst the other farms and in the surrounding towns...}_ It was kinda like a “hippy collective”- but sane. 😆 jk!! Nobody in my family is “sane!” 😂 ❤️

I come from a family with deep roots in Eastern Europe. Sunflower and sunflower by-products are a big part of our culture due to Orthodox Christian dietary restrictions. Im so happy to see people other than Slavs enjoying these amazing plants. They have so many uses, obviously the edible parts, but also the seed oil is good for everything from cooking to salad dressing, making soap and skin salves, and the left over shells from removing the seeds burn pretty good to keep your house warm 👍🏻

I am mildly frightened of sunflower heads, especially the ones that bow down and seem to stare at you without any facial features. Now that I know that they're called "heads," that makes it even creepier. I clicked this video with the intent of staring at something I find grotesque and watching it get cooked and eaten in an uncommon way, hoping to creep myself out further, because I can't handle the horror genre but still enjoy feeling fear and disgust. Was not disappointed. Edit: I'm getting recommended her geoduck video next and that sounds like a good next choice

I studied at the university in Granada, southern Spain, & I had friends who were from small towns & villages in Córdoba, the neighbouring province. I frequently spent weekends & small holidays with them in the countryside. On 1 of the farms, they'd harvest sunflowers &, on an evening, when we were chatting & having a drink, instead of the crisps & nuts we'd eat in the UK, they used to pop a sunflower head on the open fire to roast it, then we'd sit & share it as we drank. I miss things like that.

@Bad Kitty 369 Are you referring to me or EnteHS dUb, Bad Kitty? If me, I certainly didn't have money then. My brothers & I were the first generation to go to university at that age. My Mum had wanted to go when she was 18 & she certainly was intelligent enough, but she overheard her parents worrying about how they'd manage if she did. My grandmother was adamant she would study, but my grandfather said they couldn't afford it. He had also been intelligent but, as the oldest child, when his father died he had to leave school at 14 to bring in a wage. He always resented that. My Mum left school voluntarily, but went back to university as a mature student when my brothers were 17 & 14, & I was 10. My parents had saved up enough money by then. She fulfilled her dreams, got a teaching degree & became an excellent teacher of history & special needs. She really was a gifted teacher. Both my parents have always worked since leaving school, setting their children an excellent example. I got a Saturday & holiday job on a market stall age 13. I stayed there for 11 years, apart from when I lived abroad. As well as working all day Saturday, whilst at university in the UK I also worked 30 hours a week at a restaurant. I was determined to not let lack of finances hold me back & also wanted to continue studying after my first degree, so knew I needed to save as much as I could. Mine was the first year in my parents' adult life where you didn't get maintenance grants. Both of my brothers had their fees paid (that was normal for all students back then) but also got a maintenance grant to cover their living expenses. I had my fees paid but my maintenance grant was something insulting like 12p per year (equivalent to about 15 cents). As time has gone on, students have had to pay more than my brothers' generations. Now they have to pay for their fees & living expenses. Back then everyone was able to study if they had the academic ability. Now you have to be rich, & that makes me furious. We're going back to the days of my grandfather, denying bright but poor people from having a full education.
