Hey Jon. Good perspective on both models. I have the older version of both now and am thinking of upgrading them. I've heard other reviewers describing the new Madone as very comfortable and the new Emonda as a very stiff ride. You mentioned the Emonda as being comfortable so was that in the front end or the rear or both? Cheers!

Great content, Jon! I found your channel a couple of weeks ago looking for Emonda reviews. I started my search expecting to buy a Domane until I test-rode both. Now I'm deciding betw/ a 2022 SL7 with 12-spd Di2 Ultegra or coughing up a few thou more and getting a '22 SLR frame built with 11-spd Di2 Ultegra. I test rode an SLR 9 - wow! - and will likely upgrade the wheels to Aeolus RSL 37s on either Ultegra bike at time of purchase. Unless I say screw it and just get the SLR 9. Buy once, cry once!

Thank you for your video and sharing your knowledge. I'm definitely considering the 2021 Emonda. Thanks for the details regarding comfort and ride feel. I'm in my mid-40s and want something that is comfortable and somewhat fast. I currently have an aluminum endurance bike that I upgraded to Ultegra from 105 along with Reynolds Assault LE wheels and a carbon FSA crankset. It reduced the weight from 21lbs down to just over 19lbs. Which Emonda would you recommend and why? The SL7 or the SL7 eTap. Those are within my budget.

Sick bikes!!! For the average rider, on anything under a 9% grade aerodynamics are 49 x more important than weight. Tom Anhalt (Blather bout Bikes blogger) has done some awesome testing dealing with the weight vs aero topic. And the best part is he's an independent guy, not affiliated with any brand and doesn't even technically work in the industry. And I agree with previous comment....MADONE FOR LIFE! haha. I have ridden my 2019 Madone SLR 9 for more than two years. Your critique of it is quite good. The front end of the bike IS extremely stiff.... If pushed hard into a corner on a smooth road, all is fine. A fast turn on a less than smooth surface, bike is a real handful. The front end stiffness is quite fatiguing on a long descent. What I like: very good pedaling stiffness of Madone version 6 What I don't like about any Emonda I've been on: poor to fair pedaling stiffness. I'd like to another Project One, but find myself in a no-man's land in regards to Trek.

Great video Jon! Just wanted to add that the 2021 Madone is not exactly 1lb (450g) lighter than the previous model. The marketing is a little confusing, but if one were to spec a 2021 Madone with Aeolus RSL 37 wheels, the RSL integrated stem from the Emonda, and went with the lightest possible paint spec (Matte Onyx Carbon) you would approach 1 pound weight savings. The weight difference between the 800oclv Madone frameset and the older 700 series Madone frameset is only about 80 grams. Keep in mind that the addition of the T47 threaded bottom bracket adds weight to the frameset over a pressfit bb.

In 19 I had the Emonda and Madone and when tested up a climb both bikes were pretty much the same. My test was 4x, 5 minutes, 350w avg and both using Stages LS power meter. I did the test up a 5% grade and hit the lap button at the same starting spot. I ended up in the exact same spot after 5 minutes on both bikes. After that test i concluded the Madone was the better bike based on being more aero on the flats. My Madone was 1.5lbs heavier. For 21 I plan on getting a Emonda for the aero and weight combo.

Hi again Jon, this is the video i need, perfect. I have some question Jon, 1: Why Emonda doesnt has dropped seat stay and you said it is still comfort vs Madone with iso speed? Many bikes like S works SL7, Colnagon V3RS, Izalco max, Wilier zero SLR, they are using dropped seat stay to get the comfort. Whats the benefit of traditional seat stays over the dropped one, and the good thing using dropped one? 2. RSL 37 vs XXX 4. I have a plan to get this bike with the lower tier SLR6, which wheels is better to buy, those two are not much different in weight, XXX 4 should be faster on flat? Or not? 3. SLR 6 with mech ultegra, does the shifting still working good? Because the cable is fully internal and so many sharp corner before the inner cable reach the derailleur. 4. Why Emonda still using round seat post? Some say that D shape seatpost is more aero and bla bla bla. Thank you.
@jonmaloneycycling7593
@jonmaloneycycling7593 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your questions, I will try and answer the best I can. 1. I think you get more comfort from the front end, when I would set the madone to the "most comfortable setting", it felt less responsive and squishy not more comfortable. I think most of the comfort comes from the front end. 2. Trek says the RSL is a faster wheel, at least thats what the owner of my local trek shop said. 3. I would get the Di2 for sure. Ultegra Di2 is very, very, very good. You would regret this. 4. This is a good question, and I am not sure. I really like Trek and a company and have faith in them, that they are making good decisions. I am sure the have way more R and D than most companies, and they make their decisions on good information. I am defiantly a trek fanboy though!! Hope this helps!!

Hey man, great vid. I work in a trek bike shop and I still can't decide which one I should get. I'll have the SLR9 but I don't know which one yet.. My bike currently weights in at 22 lbs and I really enjoy going fast on the downhill and the flat. Although, I live in the mountains.. So there is pretty steep hills and I wonder if the madone would climb well too, not as much as the emend but like I don't know how good is the bike on the hills. Maybe you can help me deciding since you have experience on both bikes! Weights is surely a big question in pro world but TDF riders get their hands on the madone SLR9 and the emonda SLR9 but does the madone is litter to bring it freaking too like the emend and how is it possible if it is?

I already own two Domanes, but thinking of getting a new Emonda. The local dealer suggested that if I did the Project One, it might speed up the delivery time. Cyclemike, did your dealer mention this? FWIW, one of my Domanes took 8 months (November of 2020 to the happy day in July, 2021).

@@Adair9800 How clairvoyant of you! I did exactly that, after my shop advised me that the SL6 was now down as "unobtainable" 😳. Project One sure isn't cheap, but what's the point of saving for a rainy day when you could be out cycling in the rain! So, I bit the bullet and ordered an SLR7 late last year, with an arrival date of April '22, and lo and behold it arrived in my local bike shop yesterday. I'm ridiculously excited for a 59 year-old 🥳🥳🥳

OK Say something about stiffness because I intend to buy a new madone SLR, is it very stiff or is it losing this stiffness due to ISO Speed even because it is set to maximum stiffness? Madone is awesome but it looks funny. It's full of hills where I live, rolling hills that never end and my plan is to hit lots of mountains. I did a custom Emonda build with Whiskey bars they are very stiff but compliant when it counts no vibrations also to get SLR frame but avoid the pitfalls of electronic shifting. @@jonmaloneycycling7593 The one thing I don't like about the Emonda as I come from MTB/gravel background is that it's very harsh over bumps. My 650b full aluminum 800 dollar Salsa Journeyman has a somewhat better ride. So it helps to be MTB trained and get into the ready position every time you see you're going over a road imperfection as the bike does rattle your teeth a bit. That said it's the only downside. Otherwise it's a sublime powerhouse. It can be SUPER fast if you want it to be but for those long rides like centuries (harsh ride aside) it melts away the miles not so much with outright speed but just being effortless.

BTW respectfully disagree on the market thing. I buy my bikes new so doesn't concern me but IMHO a lot of people try to sell their used bikes for ridiculous prices (don't mean you) and they're not professional sellers. Often times people that have a lot of money from elsewhere. So they'd rather have 10 bikes sitting in their cellar and then sell them for an apple when they're antiquated. I share the sentiment that the used bike market is inefficient or even antisocial. But well doesn't help to moan it is what it is

@@OFFSHOREDOUG Aero bikes like Madone have more privilege under higher speed, especially over 35km/h for a considerable period. Pros can easily cruise under 40+ speed so they can save much more energy on aero bikes in a race. For ordinary people, that's difficult. And Madone is rather heavy. I am not saying that Madone is not good. I have a 2021 Madone SLR7 myself, it feels great to ride. @@houfelix3026 on flat ground I cruise at 40kph. But pros are generally in group so aero isn’t needed as much. They def need the weight advantage. I live in the highlands of Scotland. No big mountain but very rarely flat. Aero works above 20kph. If you are out yourself you would be quicker on an aero bike. They will also be faster in a headwind. I have a SLR9 etape. My second one. More comfortable than my domane and at 7.8kg not exectky heavy for 60cm frame. I bought it over the Edmonda for looks, comfort and possibility of trying a TT.
