Non-religious churches is an oximoronic idea. Because there must be something higher that should unite all those people together. And there is nothing more universally need than the meaningful unconditional love. And unfortunately we are very different in our understanding of love. We are quite limited as human beings and cannot offer by ourselves to all people that unconditional love they all need...

For me an enjoyable presentation. The insight about implementation was spot on. Practical people understand that an idea needs repetition before it becomes habituated, hence builders learn apprenticeship style, armies do drill, musicians practice and monks do mantras or affirmations. The intellect can spin out theories for and against anything because no idea has to be grounded. Alain at 2.24 dogmatically asserts that there is no God in the same assured manner as my religious leaders asserted that there was a God. He is gentler than they. The intellect can design a building using the head and even draw it on paper but what will that look like as a real physical building. Maybe the real problem is intellectuals in churches and on podiums trumpeting out their latest theories pumped up with an arm full of paper certificates...Peter

Wonderful!!! I'm a half-Academic because I studied 5 subjects to become a teacher. And while at University I always tried to convince my Professors and lecturers to discuss the beauty of it, the meaning of it, too that we shouldn't look at all these things so one-dimensionally. Why can't we work scientifically and absolutely dead-rationally, discuss stuff, write about stuff but THEN also indulge ourselves in the beauty of it, in the fascination we feel about the subject? Why is one aspect excluding the other? I don't get it! That's what I tried to tell these MEN (not many women out there)...and they just looked at me as if I were a hopeless, silly girl and said very disrespectful things. And if I wrote in my term papers only slightly like that (a little remakr after a paragraph or in the conclusion) they would mark me really badly....GOSH, that's why I really hate the academic world! That's why I'm a teacher because there BOTH is possible. But really, people, it's time for a change! And not only that but also the sophisticated language - it is a highly undemocratic thing. I hate the fact that a simple perseon (let's say a hairdresser) cannot profit from the education that is accessible at university or through books, because he or she simply cannot understand the language. STUPID!

Very interesting honest talk. The comment that I differ with is his opinion is the with regard to lying. He seems to place the reason for a lie solely on the infallible expectation of the audience rather than placing onus on the lack of the integrity and lack of courage of the individual telling the lie. This would make great dinner party conversation.
@SophiesWorld2024
@SophiesWorld2024 5 жыл бұрын
ShaQuan Buffaloe He doesn't leave it all on the audience. He says it is both. People often lie because they feel there is no good for them in telling the truth. But if you tell them you won't judge them and stick to it then they will become honest. How can you not judge them you ask? Instead you can try to understand like a partner cheats because they are not getting enough attention etc. etc. I know it's not always going to work but very few of us try.

Why would you need another human to validate you? Isn't your own consciousness sufficient to tell you the truth? How could another human know all about your life?
@Eric-tj3tg
@Eric-tj3tg 3 жыл бұрын
@@3ascdo743 I think that, as Alain mentioned, you're missing the point that humans, as social creatures, need validation. Certainly, this is true for infants, children, and adolescents. If we matured through adolescence and "individuated", became "adults",we would have not only less need for validation; it might, quite rightly, make us more interested in the validation's source, and its intent. But, "we do need our mummy", for now. Certainly you can feel the tension of being invalidated. We must start where we are, and as a patho-adolescent culture, that's where we start. The notion that the commentor shouldn't need validation (i.e., there is no God), is a denial of her reality, and in a mature society, with intact "elders", she would see non-validation (and validation) diminishing in importance.

"A lie is the responsibility of liar and lie-ee, and the bar of truth in a relationship shouldn't be set so high that lying is necessary." Alain appears to lack the understanding that this logic is typical of narcissists and ego-disordered people. Adequate emotional intelligence brings straightforward clarity to the importance of facing whatever consequences are due in a relationship you value and want to retain, as a rule.
@karend6626

Magella Newton- He is absolutely right about the liar and the lie-eve. My sister in law has set the behavior bar so high for her son, that no matter what he does, he’s wrong. Therefore he lies. Or he doesn’t say anything.. ie lies of omission. And yes I agree it’s her personality, she’s difficult to deal with because it’s her way or the highway. She needs emotional education stat before her relationship with her son is ruined. However as with all dominant personalities she will never see the damage done.

I agree with the speaker. there is a verse Marc 8,36 and I will take it out of (original) context. It says "What good is it for someone to gain the whole world, yet forfeit their soul?". Thus whatever your gain is (might it the ultimate truth) what is the salvation you gain? (from the pain you might fear)? Isn't ignorance bliss? (Matrix quotation). Well, I do not want to take any position, but I leave to be a personal decision. There is another "quote" from one of the "alien" series. It is not so much of a question of "knowing" if there is a god, rather than a decision to make if you decide to believe. Again, this is complex and I suggest everybody should (without any prejudice) should do as they see fit.

An enlightened person is not the one who understands he needs a hug, but the one who knows where to get it. I do not fault Dawkins for presenting Atheism 1.0. It is the vital 1st step. Button's 2.0 is certainly the next step, as it underscores the void. Atheism 3.0 would present the actual community, support and lifestyle needed to improve in the religion we left.

One has to believe that god doesnt exist but has to admit that we need god to comfort us. But this need is not like food and water, we won’t die without it. Regarding emotional education..a well presented insight. Alain may not know that another person Rudolf Steiner whose intellect penned the Philosophy of Freedom began training teachers 100 years ago to develop emotional sensitivity in prepubescent children.His school movement has 800 schools world wide now. The fly in the ointment though is that his mind was clairvoyant as well as logical and practical. He experienced phenomena that human eyeballs claim do not exist. Perhaps a fish will always assert that existence without water is impossible. Peter

Setting aside the whole concept of religion, it is clear that the world needs to introduce emotional intelligence education into school curriculums. Kids should be trained to think critically and be taught concepts of emotional intelligence from the first day they enter a school. Schools, in all parts of the world, focus on physical education but totally disregard the importance of emotional health and well being. I might not be such a basket case today if I had an Alain in my life when I was a kid 😵‍💫

"spirituality", depending on who you ask, is just a mish mash of concepts taken out of living and dead religions, all of which used completely out of context. modern spirituality adds to it a drop of pseudoscience, which quickly becomes dangerous. it's not a step up from religion or a step down, just a step sideways, and it harbours all of the same problems as religions.

He raises some very important issues I completely agree with, but I don't agree with most of his proposed solutions. Having Education and Media rule as one (not only Education could have a bigger voice, but Media could permeate and pollute Education), and having both at the mercy of capitalism, sounds ill-advised. Trading health and well-being for Profit (which is what capitalism and sects are about), instead of for simply enough to meet one's needs like a country doctor may do, is a rather off-putting idea too. I'm aware that trade is the currency of many things in life, but religion wasn't about trade. People would give their money freely, within their means, for the sake of their community - not trade tit-for-tat like in a modern transaction. Having nothing to give didn't bar a poor person from redemption, and forgiveness could be bestowed on the sinner. I think like him that there's a need for institutions that cater to those emotional needs, but I hope we move forward into a world where money is not the currency by which to gain relief, where nobody reaps their heap off from another's parcel of pain and tears.

I love love love his speeches . So intelligent, so needed in this world but what if I told you it was my belief in God and my spirituality that brought me to a point where I can actually understand what he is saying when he talks of love as I’m some of his others speeches . That some of what he says lines up with what I’ve learned from the Bible. There something to the Bible . It taught me so much BUT ITS MISGUIDED RELIGIOUS PEOPLE that really give me bad juju lol. I believe in God for reasons it would take a book to explain . I sit here thinking God just used an atheist to get a great message through lol because people are pushing religion away because of those misguided religious people who took the word away from love and humility and interpreted it in away to suit their own misguided ways of believing . Anyway still love the speech . Brilliant !

Do you think that the crowd who believe in God believe in him because they know him? No one knows God because we don't know anything. People assert their beliefs in a God they can't see and understand. What do they know about God those little and lesser people? I think that we must understand that there's a difference between religion and religious. A religion for everyone your own religion the one you live everyday life I call it the religion of the "the wise life". We must understand religion not from what religious and priests tell us to believe, to think and to do. But in the examination of life by searching for significations and signs. Being well intellectually and adequate in our search for the wise life.

What if a book inspires someone to get a group together and start an institution? THEN it would be fair to say that a book did in fact change the world. I rest my case Monsignor de Botton. And many, many books have changed the world in significant ways. I would mention the King James Bible and 1984 by George Orwell. Good day to you sir. JB

I love what Alain is trying to do but I believe that Angels do exist. I wonder if he has ever encountered John O’Donahue’s ideas, blessings and beliefs.

I feel sad that such a brilliant extraordinary man is an atheist. I am not religious but I certainly believe in God. To me, living with the perspective of a dead end lacks purpose and meaning.

When I was a kid I thought heroes wore a cap. I ended up at 30 having the following persons as heroes: Alain De Botton, Yuval Harari, Bill Gates. My heroes fly on the wings of philanthropy, curiosity, and culture.

One of the problems is that you would have to teach it to teachers first... We need to start training teachers in emotional intelligence as a key part of their schooling, then maybe they could pass it on to their students.

I am sad to admit that I have attempted suicide many times, and was angry every time I woke up. I would not have attempted it the first time if I had access to the knowledge that I was not the only one who sees things this way...Things are quickly unraveling for Generation Z, and we need to champion this movement if we want to see the GENUINE CHANGE we need to fix this trainwreck....

A person who says "i know there is no God but i want an imaginary angel to come and give me a hug" does not sound like a truly enlightened person to me...sounds covertly self serving to me. The dichotomy between the intellect and spirituality.

Perhaps, for many people, faced with imminent death, they need the equivalent of that angel's hug right then. We, as a society, haven't really come up with satisfying alternatives. In the last few weeks I've had some emotional turmoil and could really have done with the equivalent of those angel's hugs.

Alain de Botton has me beat by at least 100 I.Q. Points. However, I do have the ability to follow his logic, and I don't think this is a small feat on my part. I once thought it was, until I took a real good look at folks around me and find myself astonished at the number of otherwise intelligent people who completely lack this ability.

You should go to study some basics in biology and genetics to be able to judge better on such issues as life order and I should say religions provide more interesting theories then it appears at a first glance (sounds strange does't it -;). "I know that I know nothing" thats unfortunately where we still are.
