I just received my new MR1 got it all hooked up and it sounds awesome. Coming from a yamaha 760A it is like I got all new speakers. I have RBH T2's for the front and center speakers and listening to music in stereo gave me a perma grin for hours. The extra power was what these speakers needed.

Amplification-wise, it's very impressive. Feature-wise, it's barebones as heck. Horses for courses and all that, but I think people are gushing over this thing a bit too much. Great for enthusiasts (maybe), not so much for consumers.

The Emotiva XPA-11 Gen3 11 channel amplifier sells for $2,199. The MR1 is $1999 and has 11 channels of amplification based on the same amplifier technology. Granted the XPA-11 has a higher power output, but it is like you are getting the processor capabilities for free. It is common to gush over new products. I recall the Anthem AVM70 introduction, the Onkyo TX-RZ50 and the new Marantz Cinema series launches - lots of gushing. When the dust settles, it comes done to the right feature balance and performance. If the feature set is too thin, then the amplifier section isn't going to matter to consumers. Jon

I wouldn’t unless you really want the cheapest 13 channel processing you can get with a $100 stereo amp. Emotivas software is bad. No hdmi 2.1. Room calibration is weak. Who is the target market here? Someone completely new to HT that doesn’t have an AVR, yet, but just happens to have a 7.x.4+ setup ready to go? Anyone that is already that deep into HT likely has thousand dollar amps and higher quality avrs/processors. x3800H + Stereo amp gets you 11.4 processing with separate subwoofer outs that work with audessey xt32 multi sub eqing, hdmi 2.1, auro 3d, and dirac coming in march with full bass control coming in 2024. If you want 7.4, this is what I would go with and it would cost less than the Emotiva with better everything except built in amplification. I dunno. I’d rather spend a bit more total for external amps for my front channels than be hamstrung by the emotiva avr.

@@final3119 yeah totally agree this someone from with tonewinner AV. The only way I could see as one option is it's cheaper than even mid range avrs. Ie this tonewinner is £400, but amplifiers equal Denon 8500. You may decide to give up the features of a denon, for reason of power.

I own the Cinema 50 so I'm a bit a biased, I really like it. I love that the 50 looks elegant and unobtrusive in living room, my wife like that's too. The MR1 looks so bulky and industrial which some probably like, but its really in your face. Saying that I just got a Emotive BasX A3 to test in my system. I currently use the Parasound 2125 v2 for the L/R but want to test against a 3 channel amp and see if there's a difference in getting the same power to the L/C/R. The cinema feels like a fully baked product minus the DIRAC right now. The Emotive MR1 is a very cool first gen product that probably needs some refining. All in all I think they got something there especially in terms of power and the transformer, I wish them well with it.
@ripewave
@ripewave Жыл бұрын
Brian, Nice to have a fellow Cinema 50 owner weigh in. I think you have positioned the two products correctly. The Marantz Cinema 50 is more of an elegant look, designed to blend in and subtlety notice like a cool piece of décor. The Emotiva appeals to the home theater esthetic with its blue lights is sophisticated in its industrial approach. The MR1 is released as part of their BASX line, but with the power amplifier section of their XPA line. One is to expect it to be minor DIRAC. I wouldn't be surprised if Emotiva released an XMC version. Perhaps call it the XMR1 with the addition of DIRAC and more balanced connections. Jon

I wanted to post that I hooked the Emotive A3 and I didn't like the sound signature. I thought my old 2 channel Parasound 2125 v2 sound bigger, warmer. The Emotive sounded more neutral and clear but mad the sound a bit more in your face/harsh. At this point I think the Parasound matches better with Marantz more laid back rounder sound. Maybe I'll try adding another 2125 just for the center. or do nothing the Cinema 50 really sounds pretty good.

I went to a boutique hifi store yesterday to audition a pair of kef ls50 meta. The auditioning room had a pair of monoblock mc901 mcintosh. This os a Hybrid 600 watt SS, 300 watt tube, total 900 watt monoblocks and mcintosh tube preamp and some Sonus Faber for L and R speakers. Crazy room. And was my first time listening to this type of gear. The owner asked me what I will be powering the ls50 with, and I told him I have my onkyo RZ50 for HT right now, but I am going to upgrade to an emotiva 2 channel stereo amp in the future. He told me emotiva is not a hifi sound, and they give you lots of power, but not the best power. Assuming what he says is true, and tbh that is the competitive advantage of this new AVR, and if you take away that advantage and just make it a feature, it falls on its face quick, because it also doesn't have hdmi 2.1, or dirac live. With high channel count applications, I think I would rather stick to anthem, arcam, jbl synthesis, etc.
@ripewave
@ripewave Жыл бұрын
Sammy- I appreciate this topic. The Hi-Fi shop you describe has some high price inventory. They also don’t has access to Emotiva with their direct to consumer business model. So it serves them well to differentiate. I believe a comparison to Arcam, JBL Synthesis and Anthem is a better place to start for a receiver compare. Dirac and Anthem ARC Genesis will do better than EmoQ and the others have HDMI 2.1. I think the Emotiva MR1 pitch is at the $2000 price point. They aim to provide sound quality to compete with Anthem, Arcam and JBL Synthesis but at much lower prices - provided you forfeit some features. It is a trade off, but nice to see the option available. If the MR1 can outperform the Marantz/Denon/Onkyo/Pioneer tier they will find success with this model. If it underperforms it will fail.-Jon

I provide my feedback based on those results. I do not record the audio due to copyrights of source material (and I want to use track I am very familiar with - not license free content) and that I don’t feel the recording and playback on your end can provide any meaningful reproduction of what I am hearing. New subscriber here, My question is the DAC the same as the ones in the MC1? If they upgraded it that could be a game changer. The MC1 has a great sounding DAC btw.
@ripewave
@ripewave Жыл бұрын
Thanks for subscribing and great question. Determining the DACs in AV Receivers (and processors) is often a hard detail to acquire - especially with new products. Our prior research identified the MC1 DAC as a Cirrus Logic CS42528, while the XMC-2 uses the AKM 4490EQ DAC (albeit, with all the supply issues - those could have changed). I understand that the RMC-1 (version 2 hardware) will come out this summer with a new DAC board and will move from AKM to TI. The XMC-2 will get revised to utilize the old RMC-1 design once that is delivered. What they placed in the MC1 is not yet known to me. Jon

William - Yes, the MR1 is targeted towards budget market as part of the BASX range. Not sure if Tonewinner uses Emotiva tech or vice versa, but that is not that important - it is share tech regardless. The Denon software user interface (and Marantz) as among the most polished in the industry. Albeit, I find that they need improvement in usability and are a bit slow at times. The UI in the Emotiva RMC-1 is plain text basic - but I find more intuitive and faster to navigate. Emotiva lacks a webUI today. Denon also has HEOS.
