Young women in Bugiri District, Uganda, are seeking ways to be independent and care for their families. Being a growing sector, a group of young women is looking at tilapia farming as a source of empowerment and income. They face many challenges in accessing the necessary resources to start their farms. Despite this, they are determined to succeed and take advantage of the opportunities aquaculture could offer them. Collaborating with Faith (the author of this story) and the activists from the Women Economic Empowerment for Bugiri (WEEB) group, they are learning about innovative technologies such as cage fish farming and modern constructed fishponds that would allow them to fully exploit the potential of aquaculture and participate in the local fish value chain. With hard work and dedication, women in this community, are starting their tilapia farm, contributing significantly to the local workforce and boosting food security.
