There is a good subway in Moscow. It took 40 minutes for me to reach the subway station (because I was sober). But this aifield looked like a battlefield because of plenty drunken bodies, lying on the ground. There was pretty dark, when this gig ended, and there were hundreds of empty bottles, stuck in the ground. I was 20 years old.

I was there in my 20. It was the airfield, this concert was free for people. Some guys arrived day before and spent the night within their own tents. The estimated amount of people was more than 1 million, up to 1,5. It took for me 40 minutes to reach the subway station, through the corridor of army guys, who controlled the moving.

This was right after the collapse of the USSR / Soviet Union. Not many music shows or any form of entertaintment were giving green light by USSR laws , especially not for American rockbands. So when Metallica came to perform right after the collapse,Russians went crazy and they just kept coming and coming to Moscow to see a rock show. The guards couldn't check any tickets because it was impossible to check so many people, which means everybody could now join the show for free , causing even more to people go there. The Army was present, a lot of people got injured, some died, fell in love and I guess some babies were concieved, waiting to be born and live a better Russian life.

@@emilianosintarias7337 Nope, not much worse. Life wasn't all that great, but it was stable. Yes, there were shortages in many things, but nothing compare to what happened in 90s. 90s were horrible in Russia, organized crime was out of control, school system collapsed, industry, agriculture collapsed. The change was too quick, to sudden, nobody was ready for it. I left Russia in 1991, but I still have friends and classmates there and I know a lot, not from TV, from people who lived it.

Remember, this was summer of 1991. The Soviet Empire was on its last legs, like a wounded dog. The kids who had been kept away from western culture (in fact, modern rock was banned in Communist Europe) finally felt they had a place to safely cut loose (even though there are many shots of Russian military, at this point, their job was just to look scary). A great tune to react to, from the same time is Wind Of Change by Scorpions.

There was a joke I saw at one point that sums up this show. “Germany sent millions to conquer Russia. American sent 8 and did it in one day.” Generals command armies. In the ‘90s, James Hetfield commanded entire countries. The late 80s thru the 90s Metallica was an unstoppable force. This was a band that went from opening for Ozzy Osborne to selling out full arenas in the span of a couple of years. Metallica - Battery (live Seattle 1989) Creeping Death (Moscow 1991)

They counted 1.6m.but they let more in because they ran out of tickets. And the helicopters were for cooling the people down. And their were like over 50+ deaths. Which makes sense.

This was in 91. the final concert of Metallica, on Khodynskoe Pole. Nobody expected that there would be so many spectators - 1 000 000 - it's horror! the organizers got scared, but nothing happened ...

How long to leave? I don't know about this concert, but in the USA at a Nascar race there are over 100,000 people and it takes about 4 to 5 hours to get the crowd and traffic out and some people just pitch a tent and sleep over night rather than try to deal with the traffic. Most Nascar events they close down one side of a highway and use it only for the race fans to exit on. The biggest concert I went to was about 50,000 people at an AC/DC concert, and to put that in perspective, that is like the entire population of a small to medium size city. God help you if you have to use the bathroom or have a medical emergency. I saw one woman be lifted and passed over the crowd with the crowd acting like a human conveyer belt. It was the fastest way to move her. The lead singer told the fans to help her get to the medical tent.
