Two comments from a book lover who recently finally arranged for a wee reading spot in their house: 1) while the bench is insanely beautiful (well done Graham!), it will not do as a seating to spend long hours on, it's too hard and those cushions will be moving about a lot, an armchair with a footstool or a beanbag would have worked better 2) it is essential to have a little side table to rest your tea/water/any drink of choice, setting it on the bench is a recipe for disaster. Love the bookshelf, well done Alana & Graham.

First off - LOVE Graham! This is a lovely makeover, the paint (stunning color), the boxes for the books, the light. My issue is (and has been forever) is the 'seating. As an avid reader, I don't want to sit on boxes with cushions, although the esthetic is lovely with the pillows. I want a chair, with an ottoman that keeps me hugged and comfortable, feet propped up. I would love someone to sit down on the seat and show us the comfort level of the boxes and then you decide. Aesthetically, the room is so pretty, but practically the bench isn't comfy. I love your work, but the benches are always a letdown. Not meant to be mean in any way, just comfy for my reading pleasure!! Keep up the great work, I love your channel and look forward to Saturdays with AG!

The bench makes absolutely no sense whatsoever in terms of comfortable, cozy seating for reading. Where does one curl up? In the corner? With the window sill digging into one's back? If one shifts around at all, the cushions will drift off the bench. The picture is hung just low enough to bang one's head on. As another commenter noted, where to set a cup of tea or glass of wine? That bench will eventually be used for storage and nothing more -- and then replaced by a comfy chair, ottoman, and tiny pedestal table. Clearly, as she stated, Alexandra is not a dedicated reader. All that said, I do quite like the book boxes. Pink ... again.
@heatherinparis
@heatherinparis 2 жыл бұрын
@@ainsleywinkworth9939 I know! Truly the shelves are the best part of this project but the bench is totally useless. Any dedicated reading spot requires a comfortable CHAIR, not a slippery bench with loose cushions, nor a light shining directly in one's eyes. Just aweful.

I'm afraid I agree. I like the look and the idea, but I don't think it's super functional. Those pillows will slide away if you lean against the wall, and the wall is too much of a 90° angle to sit comfortably. A nice comfy armchair or loveseat would've been a lot more practical (or a bench that is built a lot more for comfort, but it wouldn't be my first option for a reading nook. Or a daybed would also have been great.

In addition, if she sits in the corner of the bench, the light will be over her feet. A chaise lounge or chair and ottoman with a small drink table would have been more practical. Colors are great and the book wall is such a great design.

My ideal reading spot would include a comfy supportive chair with an ottoman. A lap quilt (maybe in a storage ottoman), over the shoulder lighting, and shelves for books. Someplace to set a drink would be good. A bench for seating may look good in a picture, but sitting enough hours to actually read 10- 15 books a month…..nope, a bench won’t cut it. Maybe as a kid, but I’m middle aged, and my back would hurt!
@juliecaron7569
@juliecaron7569 2 жыл бұрын
It is very creative and unusual, warm and cozy, but the practicality is off: when you read, you put your feet up, so the woman will have to sit by the window and her head will hit the frame on the wall behind and there is no light on that wall to light the book. Function before beauty 🙂

Yes! I like the option of sitting up or lying down when I’m reading. If this had been my space, I would have wanted the bench along the whole wall, not just a part of it. As well as a space to put a cup or glass
@janetd4862
@janetd4862 2 жыл бұрын
Agree! It’s cute, but not practical. She needs a chair that can be comfortable for hours, and a way to put her feet up. In the winter, it will be cold by that window, so she’ll need a lap blanket/quilt/afghan of some kind. I would have put the seating away from the window, and the cubby “art” on a different wall.

I feel like this was a missed opportunity for a wall-to-wall low daybed/cuddle puddle area with a million pillows that would have doubled as a guest sleeping space. The size and shape of that nook was perfect for it. The shelves still would've worked and one could have doubled as a side table for a drink. It's cute to look at, but that bench looks less than functional for hours of reading especially when she is used to reading in a big, comfy bed.

When I moved into my 1927 condo there was a small 7' x 8' space between the tiny kitchen and the main room. My friends all assumed I would put in a tiny table and two chairs. Nope. It's become my garden reading room. It's perfect and I love it so much.

You knocked it out of the park!!! If anything, feel comfortable using those “sit-up” pillow with arm rests in the corner by the window, as a corner anchor, then build with other pillows. Maybe a floor vase with papas grass poofs, or tree to bring in some earth elements. In the future, for custom cushions… Obtain 4-inch egg crate cushions from the medical equipment stores. Then wrap the top egg-crate with batting. Cover with your favorite fabric. Anyone reading 47 books a month will adore you! Otherwise, consider a chaise lounge chair & rocking chair set. They offer variety in seating & invite others to join for book talks, as well as offer health benefits during marathon reads. But all that is just for future ideas. For this space, you created a calm, fascinating, fun place to read & it looks FABULOUS 🎉

The piece de resistance of this makeover was the wise choice of that graphic painting on the wall that you painted half sulking room pink/white - it really made sense of it and completed the overall look! Welcome Graham - great work!

Also, Alexandra, I adore how you created a transitional wall area. The crispy edge & wall art was fun & thoughtful. The box wall was truly mind blowing & I was hesitant until you painted then - Score!!!! I do love the idea of a side table for tea & edibles. Many home decor stores have a metal, scallop clam. When the sides come down, they hold cookies & cupcakes for club reads. Otherwise, it sits cute & upright.

Love how books look sorted by color but it also makes my librarian brain hurt when I think about trying to find something specific that I want to reference or reread. So I'm an alphabetical by author if it's fiction and by subject if it's non-fiction book sorter.

I’m an English teacher who owns hundreds of books. Mine are colorized and I don’t struggle to find things at all. For some reason I just know what color the books are. I do have them sorted by category though-professional, fiction, nonfiction, oversized, etc--so they are narrowed down somewhat.

It looks lovely - I wish I had space in my studio apartment for a reading nook. I just read on the sofa, or the balcony, or the bed. To finish this off, it would have been great to take a small artist's brush and paint along just above the base boards, to cover that strip of white. And add a plant or two to the window sill or the book case boxes.

What a beautiful makeover!! I love the wall color and how the shelves perfectly match it. Most of all tho, that art print that lines both walls really seals it-gorgeous 🤩 Also, Graham is insanely talented! The fluting is perfection.

What a beautiful, cozy place to read - my favorite thing to do! Love the color! It scared me at little at first, that you were painting everything the same color, but it really works. The floating shelves are just brilliant! I personally would rather have had a chaise for comfort rather than the bench, or a comfy chair and ottoman, but the bench is gorgeous and so well made. I can't wait till you make over Taylor's living room. Mid-century modern is my favorite, as I grew up in the 1950s. Beautiful job!

Hmm, will see how it looks when the living room is done, but I think I personally would have like some curtains and a rug to increase the cozy factor. Shelves are really gorgeous though.

I would much rather have had a big comfy chair and an ottoman to put my feet on. The cushion is going to slide when she leans up against the wall. It just doesn’t seem as cozy in my opinion. Graham is definitely talented though!!

Love this so much! All she needs is a tiny side table for her warm cozy drink while she’s reading. At first I was really wishing you’d put the bench across from the window as opposed to next to it. But seeing it come together it just works! I really wanted to see very cozy up in the nook with a book and try it out.

I absolutely love it. I’m super bad at visualizing how things will look together then am sad when I buy several things and realize they don’t work. Milanote is cool because I can see how everything works together before spending the money!! So thankful for your design tips!😊

I loooooooove the wall color, storage bench, and shelves! And Graham is great! However, I don't display books, I read them. I have book shelves and they're alphabetized. I feel that if you want to display books by color you should make book jackets and then label your books so they are still organized, but I actually read a book everyday so I NEED organization.

I love this person's book collection - I spied Alison Cochrun's, "The Charm Offensive," in the stacks, and that's one of my FAVORITE ROM-COMS!!! (GO READ IT!). This is one of my favorite makeovers ever, probably because I want to make my own space even cozier and more bookish than it already is to date. I love the way the saturated color makes this to-the-side area its own space. That bench is an absolute DREAM. Great job!
