I don’t think you have, or will lose viewers because it’s not a shunting layout. It’s the ideas, the solutions, exploring the possibilities. Blowing away the cobwebs of convention.

Like others, i don't think you'll lose viewers Mike. This channel shows what a bit of experimentation and creativity can get you. I find it a wonderful antidote to videos of layouts that must have cost tens of thousands in total. Thanks again for keeping us inspired! Paul

A nice collection of electric units. The red unit reminds me of the older West Yorkshire PTE trains - very similar livery

I’m OO but have been very tempted to have a go in N after seeing what you have done in a small footprint. Good job, and I like the rolling stock, especially the tram.

What would be even more amazing than these already are is if you could modify the bodyshells (either rearrange the doors and windows or simply repaint over the existing bodyshells or replace them with new 3D printed bodyshells) of the EMUs to look more like British ones. Perhaps you could 3D-print something like a Class 317 or 321 for example, and then replace the body on the chassis with that. There are actually loads of possibilities yet to be explored 😃

I've been watching your videos for quite a while now and do like your approach, i design and print a lot of my own freelance loco's to run on Kato chassis's, British outline is just too expensive and the quality of Japanese stuff is unsurpassable, keep it up!

What a lovely wee layout! Well done to you on working with Cadets. Challenging and rewarding and doing a lot of good for the youth.💪🫡 My Army career started at 13 as a Cadet with the Royal Irish Rangers. The No.4 Rifle was the height as me! 😂 Smashing channel 👍🏼 Ian

Thanks. I started with the No4, then SLR as a Cadet. It seems odd not to do cadets after 24 years but hoping to get more model railways and travelling done

People don’t realise how much extra work goes into being an AI/Officer in terms of preparation etc. I know army paperwork well and the time it takes but at least we got paid to do it unlike yourselves! Time to focus on yourself and the family!

Mike, thank you for your blogs on N Scale free lance. Your series is an encouragement to finish my own new small N scale layout. Finding budget British rolling stock in Kentucky is problematic. Ordering from UK retailers is cost prohibative. The Kato steeple cab will do for motive power plus the few other bits and bobs I purchased 30 years ago will round out the other wagons and locomotives. My next progect: paint the Langley Class 29 metal body on an American Kato/Atlas RS1 chassis. Thanks again.

Hi Mike that truly is fantastic! That my friend is the beauty of building hills out of newspaper,as i learnt you can always push it in and adapt it to get the longer trains round the curves etc! But that little scene you have created is lovely.

Overall, your little layout is superb. Everything here sits in place where it ought to be, and you have manage to build something aestheticallly pleasing. Plus all the other qualities, of course. I take note for my own layouts (OO/HO and N in final preparation), the dry riverbed is my favorite.Keep on going with the freelance side, Keep on going with the freelance side, it's refreshing and I love it !

I’m liking the passenger rolling stock. Having a yard or simply a pass through hidden at the rear of really does give a lot of options for what is seen at the front. Ever thought about making the front with interchangeable sections to allow for a different look to the layout? From buildings to a small forest to a rolling hill/hills. 🤔

Definitely one of my favourites of your layouts 😊👍

Really enjoyed the video; the layout looks great. If I was going for N gauge, I would consider Kato, even if that meant no British outline steam. I get the feeling that if you want a shunting layout, OO or O gauge would be good choices, whereas N is better for trains travelling through a landscape.

Hello, another top video,the new EMU is looking smart going round the layout,it does to fit in perfectly.im sorting out a N gauge at the moment 90s diesels and have a few engines before the prices went up.

That is a very nice layout andrunning all sorts of stock is what its all about for me. I have recently aquired some N stock,a couple of Model Power GP38 and a couple of Kato GP's and a dozen US rolling stock ,also two of those center cab Kato switchers and two of Bacman Plymouth switchers, everythig will run over the smallest radius of Kato Unitrak smoothly. Already got more than i need but never could resist a bargain!!!!!!!!!!!!

No complaints from myself. I set up an n gauge because of the bargains to be had for EMUs and trams from Kato. Stay away though if you like subtle, subdued liveries!! So a big 👍👍👍🖖👍 from me

This layout has everything to be honest, visual appeal, choice of shunting or straight running and compact! Quick question though…how do the Tomix trains run compared to Kato? I use Kato exclusively as I was told the Tomix won’t run with the Kato ezitrack and Kato power combination (I bought the Kato M1 starter set in Japan many years ago and the shop clerk said about the incompatibility). Great vid, love freelance rail!
@BudgetModelRailways4 ай бұрын
Thanks. I use Tomix and Kato no worries. Any N Gauge train will run on any modern track as far as I know, using any controller. I can't think of any practical reason why this would be a problem?
@kariikonen86954 ай бұрын
Ah the tomix vs kato battle has been going on for years, as well as Micro-Ace. But I agree that the three are far better than other N scale manufacturers.
@BudgetModelRailways4 ай бұрын
@@kariikonen8695 I've seen layouts running all three so not sure what the supposed problem is?!
@kariikonen86954 ай бұрын
I think @andygorman858 's clerk meant that it was the track thst was incompatible, not the trains. Since Kato and Tomix track are not compatible unless with a Kato track converter or just sawinf it off. So overall its probably a miscommunication from Andy' s end with the seller. Both kato, tomix and micro ace run on the same voltage, ampere and all three are compatible with N gauge track
@BudgetModelRailways4 ай бұрын
@@kariikonen8695 thanks for the clarification. That sounds right that the track systems are not compatible but everything else is. Simplest answer for me is to use Peco track and points

Japanese railway companies in the interwar period used to send their men to study electrification projects in the UK, notably the Southern. They adopted most aspects of the Southern system save for using 1500v DC catenary electrification rather than third rail. Although of course you are playing with an EMU that belonged to the Japanese National Railways rather than a private railway company, your experiment wasn't wide off the mark!
