For the month of December I'm looking at Dos. #doscember
I show you how to emulate an old Pentium 120 Socket 7 PC on modern PC and install DOS 6.22.

Nice demo. It should be noted that the HDD "Internal Controller" is only available on machines which actually have a physical HDD controller. Which typically starts only with Pentium machines.

Nice video on Dos Emulation Mikey, I say around an A++. I have seen this about in the TwisterOS but never paided no attention to it. Now you got me started I'll have to play with it.

Nice video. Box86 is a way to go since PCem programmer abandoned PCem project. I tried it for some old Win95 games (Warcraft II) and it worked perfect. (Nostalgia watching intro in computer store at the time I could not afford PC)

I have used the VHD format for the C drive and then I can just mount the disk image in Windows 10

You can put all those files you need on one ISO image and mount it as a CD. Saves time.

Thanks for this software. We can recreate our old PCs from 80's to 90's. A virtual museum! It's better than dosbox.

There is also WINBOX-for-86BOX that simplifies the setup and has some of the vintage DOS machine profiles from various manufacturers pre-built for you so you can just choose one of them instead of going through all the menus and options setting each one yourself. One thing DOSBOX does that 86BOX does not do right now is redirection to a real serial or parallel port on the host computer - if 86BOX could do that, you could do lots of neat things with it including direct hook-ups for multiplayer gaming with a null modem cable.

I see 86BOX has just recently added serial redirection plus they also added the Gravis Ultrasound as a sound card option a couple months back so it is getting closer and closer to being able to do pretty much everything a real DOS machine supports.

One tip with images. YOu could also open the hard drive image directly with WinImage, and copy your files in. I also believe that if you used a VHD image on Windows, you could mount the VHD directly with Windows and copy things in that way as well. Mac OS can mount .img files directly in the finder. For Linux users, I am pretty sure most desktop environments have built in support for mounting .img files, although they may mount them read-only by default.

At the end of the video your are not listening to some "midi" you are listening to SoundBlaster music but you may use general midi emulation if you can emulate Roland MT-32 or Roland SCC-1, also for simpler emulation you can also use DosBox, no virtualisation, direct DOS startup then ... Run a game :-) and DosBox can be launched thru a DosBox Game launcher that preconfigure DosBox for a large amount of games (if you have the game files of course)

What about using middle mouse button to ungrip your mouse, it depends on how many mouse buttons you choose there are on your mouse ("Two", "Three" or "Wheel")

Going to try this out. DosBox-X gives me issues on Linux with a second video card and runs slow so I end up running the Windows version with WINE.

Be interested to know how you get on performance wise on Linux vs Dosbox-X. It's more involved to setup but I think you get a more authentic experience.

Downloaded all files today Feb 20th, 2024. Followed instructions in video. Dos installation keeps saying Enter any key to reboot and repeat. Help pleeeeeez

Anyone having problem running Print Artist 4.0 Platinum with 86Box? Using Windows 3.11 wfw and windows 95 ocr 2.5

Not sure if it needs to be said or not but emulating PC hardware is quite taxing and you do needs a fairly beefy PC to run anything over a DX4-100 486 machine, the faster the emulated machine the more grunt you will need. The sweet spot for me is a 300MHz AMD K6/2 with a Voodoo 3 and a AWE32 soundcard anything more and it starts to get choppy, I have an i9-10850k CPU. There is a handy tool called 86Manager which allows you to configure the emulator without loading it up everytime.

thanks. yes to be transparent my pc is AMD Ryzen 3700x. not gone beyond pentium 120. will check out the 86manager as I feel I'm going to be using this more

Does anyone know why you need a beast PC to emulate faster older machines? It doesn't really make any sense.

@@FlyboyHelosim There is a lot of overheads involved in emulating anything, the more accurate the emulation the more cpu power you need. To emulate a SNES at 100% accuracy requires a fair bit of horse power and thats just for a snes with only a few chips, imagine a PC and all of its chips, ram, soundcards and gfx cards it has to emulate in software and you can see why you need a beast PC. Its not as simple as well this cpu only runs at 133MHz but my real cpu is 4GHz it probably needs most of that just to run it, let alone multiple cores at the same speed.

actually an i5 4570 is fast enough to emulate a pentium mmx 150 and voodoo3, it plows through any DOS machine. laptop CPUs can't offer the same performance unless they're are fairly recent.

Excellent video. However, how can I run my DOS game from their floppies using a USB Floppy drive on a DOS emulator?

Hi, unfortunately you just showed to us a most easy way of dos emulation... but how about 3dfx for example (in dos or even in windows)? How about to show awe32 complatibility, for example in Duke3D, or other game, which have a direct support of this sound card, how about soundfonts? Does it works? Because from what you shown to us, its was just a lazy way of using dosbox, where you have a menus and you dont need to use dosbox commands like mount and others ;-). Show the real power and opportunities of 86Box, go on! :-). Anyway, I need to say, nice explanation for really beginners... And last question, does that emulation goes at least same fast, like a real pc on modern pc? To be honest, if ill find some time at Christmas, i want to try it too...

How do you play a floppy game, like Batman Returns, if it's not in img format? Only setup, config, exe. I can play it by loading the folder in the CD ROM drive (is this correct? lol), but it says I can't install the game that way, only through the floppy drive. I'm just confused by the proper way to play regular (non CD) DOS games. Doesn't seem right to get to the files through the CD ROM drive.

Only problem is I keep losing my mouse, and to get it back I had to Ctrl+Alt+Del, then hit "Esc" The mouse comes back but the 86box computer reboots and it keeps happening. :/

hit F8 and F12 at the same time so you have your mouse on your host machine

the main issue I have with this emulator is that you can't save the settings. So for multiple different machines you need to change everything manually

WHAT THE FAAAAAAAK?! I'm into Emulation since Childhood but havnt seen 86Box before. How is that possible? I gonna try it out right now, it might close the gap between dosbox and VirtualBox. It might also be fully portable. (Dosbox isnt if u use TCP/IP / NE2000, and Virtualbox isnt either.) Man, thanks for the Vid.

Ayayay, just seen. Required WinPCAP for dedicated Network access. It needs to be portable (without additional software) and LAN Party Compatible. I might play around with SLIRP Port-Forwarding, maybe it works.

It works fine. Was able to play FIFA 98 with a Voodoo 3.

it's very similar to emulators for consoles such as SNES, NES, Sega Genesis etc. it emulates the PC hardware of 1980s and 1990s pretty accurately then you can install and run any OS and games running under the OS, you will have to learn about MS-DOS, its commands and the drivers.

it is an emulator, it emulates the hardware not the environment (DOSBox emulates the environment)

@@MikeyGRetro I use the Magic DosBox free app and the Hackers Keyboard app to have F-Keys. I figure it out that the Magic DosBox free app starts in the 16 bit Big Real Mode/Unreal Mode with ems=true in the config file. In this mode we have 4 gb segment size for DS, ES, FS and GS segment, but CS and SS segment have 64 kb segment size. We can use it for to write directly into the linear framebuffer of the Svga-S3 emulation at linear address hex C0000000 for 800x600x32 resolution for example. Using the official version we have to switch to ems=false and to start a program to switch into the 16 bit Big Real Mode/Unreal Mode. So it is a nice feature and compatible with DOS- and BIOS- software interrupts.

@@MikeyGRetro I am a DOS hobby programmer for tiny executable made with the assembly programming language and i put all instructions into batch files to create a tiny executable with a little help from debug. I use Debug from Paul Vojta extracted beside the batch files in the mounted folder of DosBox.

There is a [autoexec] section in the config file and i start a batch file with a a selfmade menu made with the choice command and with checking the errorlevel in reverse order. On Android: [autoexec] PATH=%path%;C:/ mount c: "/storage/emulated/0/BATCH" c: Menue.bat
