Enchanted movie commentary reaction
For this movie commentary and reaction we felt like it was time to do Enchanted. We've seen at least a solid few princess movies now so we get what they're referencing and it's overall a great look at some of the more ridiculous tropes of this type of movie that still manages to be a lot of fun.

Fun Fact: The woman behind the desk at the law office is Jodi Benson, who did the speaking and singing voice of Ariel in The Little Mermaid. The guy who plays Nathaniel plays Peter Pettigrew/Wormtail in the Harry Potter series. The actor who plays Giselle's love interest is Patrick Dempsy from the TV series Grey's Anatomy. One of the elderly men that was dancing with the flowers was a chimney sweep dancer in the step-in time number in Mary Poppins. I never minded Nancy running away with Edward, since it seemed throughout the whole movie that she wanted that fairytale romance. She was overjoyed when she got flowers from Robert, and was wowed (and imo slightly jealous) when Edward introduced Giselle. I think she wanted that spontaneous and fairytale ending, which I think is cute.

I like her other clothes too, but the change in Giselle's style is thematic. She starts off in the insanely poufy princess dress, then makes the green dress which is still pretty fantastical, then makes the short pink sundress she wears on the date with Edward, and finally shows up at the ball in an entirely modern, very sleek dress. It's also in a darker color than anything she's worn so far (except for Robert's pjs), which further signifies that she's becoming more modern and down to earth rather than the bubbly pastel princess. By the end, she's in a soft yellow, almost casual looking piece (despite her business designing the gorgeous princess-y gowns for kids), showing she's found a balance between the worlds.

Also she is the only one with a "real" look in the ball where all are dressed as in a fairy tale, which says a lot about the evolution of her character. And also, Robert wears the exact same clothes that she put on the manekin prince at the beggining, meaning that it was him all the time.

Regarding Nancy marrying the prince really fast: the whole movie they show and point out how she really wishes for romance, romantic gestures, and fantasy-like stuff. She's super excited about the doves, the ball, how the shoe fits her... Nancy wanted to live a fairytale all along but Robert was always so serious that she had to kind of give up on that (why she stayed with him for five years when they were clearly not a good fit is still beyond my understanding). She wanted to live an adventure, fairy-tale life and she got to live it. Also note that when she first meets the prince and he talks about Giselle being his true heart desire etc, the first thing Nancy says is how romantic and unironic that was. Edward is literally the man who does the kind of stuff she's always wanted, and Edward is kinda just going along the story so it makes sense that they would choose to marry quickly. In the end they all kind of fell in love after only a few days.
@ReiroLufkin

Actually there's a deleted scene with Nancy in which she explains the kind of romantic adventure she feels she needs, and, for me, instead of contradicting the main message, it adds to it like "whatever works for you". Personally, I never saw her behaviour as overly childlike, maybe naive. I can see how it comes across that way but I like to think she's just from her own reality. She may not be used to the world of grey of when she grew up in black and white, good and evil. Sure she can seem childlike but she felt like an adult from a different reality to me. I totally get why other people would perceive it differently, that's just my take on it.

I wouldn't say she behaves like a child. She's just very very naive. Plus from a different world. I think Robert likes her for her positivity. She bought a different perspective to his other wise straightforward life. Basically summing up every romance movie of the 2000s. Looking at today's movies that focus so much more on feelings and bonding and then watching movies from the 90s or the 2000s, its an experience.

Here's a big one: *deep breath* The female soap star “Angela” (so named for Angela Lansbury, who voiced Mrs. Potts in Beauty and the Beast) is played by Paige O’Hara, the voice of Belle. “Angela” is arguing with a man named “Jerry” (Jerry Orbach voiced Lumiere) because she’s having an affair with a man named “Ogden” (David Ogden Stiers voiced Cogsworth). 45:18 the reason why they gave her that dress is because of her character development. Robert was wearing, like you mentioned, the same outfit of her "true love" at the beginning of the movie, indicating that Robert was beginning to "believe" in happily ever afters, that fantasies and fairytales might be, in a way, real. She wore that dress, a modern and toned down dress, indicating that she was starting to "understand" reality, she was getting this world's views.

I'll never get over this amazing performance by Amy Adams, she did not only convince us that she was a Disney princess, she made it so genuine, 0 mimics, the scene where she experiences anger from the first time it's just brilliant, completely raw and you can totally see what's going on inside her even though she doesn't even know, and it's so complex and GOSH SHE SELLS IT SO WELL. And I'll never get over "So close" MY GOD I think the only Disney romantic moment that comes close is "I see the light". Yes, a "Whole New World" is beautiful, we all love "Beauty and the Beast" , "Bella Notte" is really cute and "Can you feel the love tonight" is so iconic. But this song has a rare beauty to it. It has such a sad, sweet, defieted, deep voice that just... Gets you, and it takes you somewhere else. One of my favourites of all time.

I have a lot of trivia for you guys. I don’t think there is a Disney film with more easter eggs than this one. Some facts have already been mentioned in the comments but will be included again below. 1. The narrator is Mary Poppins herself, Julie Andrews. 2. The troll has dresses belonging to the other Disney princesses attached to his waist. 3. Nancy Tremaine (Idina) has the same last name as Cinderella’s stepmother. 4. Robert’s law firm Churchill, Harline, & Smith is named after the composers & lyricist for Snow White & the Seven Dwarves. 5. Jodi Benson, the voice of Ariel, plays Robert’s secretary and Part of Your World can be heard playing in the background. 6. The old men who hand ladies flowers & dance in the number That’s How You Know are the chimney sweeps from Mary Poppins. 7. When Edward is watching a soap opera in his motel room, the woman in it is Paige O’Hara the voice of Belle, Jerry Orbach (Lumiere) & David Ogden Stiers (Cogsworth) are both referenced and the song Beauty and the Beast is playing over the soap opera scene. 8. When Edward is going door to door in Robert’s apartment building a woman with children answers at one of the apartments Edward knocks on. That woman is Judy Kuhn, the singing voice of Pocahontas. 9. James Marsden was really run over by all those cyclists in order for it to look real.

I don't think the central message is how quickly people fall in love - I think it's more about falling into relationships because that's what is "expected" of you (and trying to have it for the sake of the relationship vs the person you are actually in it with). So the prince/princess bit of not knowing one another, but being fated to be together anyway, falls into that. But so does the real life couple who are clearly looking for two different things from the relationship, but have settled into it and are compromising what they want to make it work. Love this!

Loved this reaction and the commentary! I used to feel the same about Giselle’s dress at the ball and in terms of what I feels suits her character, I definitely love the ones she made herself. That said, I ended up really appreciating that dress for the ball, an event more suited for her actual style, but one she was also expecting to be her last moment in that world. So she chose a dress more in line with the “reality” she is in. And then you have Robert looking almost exactly like how Giselle made up her dream guy in her world. And he ends up singing! So it really is a nice visual fashion wise to show both characters meeting in the middle and finally realizing what they want and need I think.

Gisele's innocence matches a TV trope called "born sexy yesterday", woman characters who are clueless and don't know how the world works out so the male character has ho take care of her and teach her how things are. Think of Leelo from Fifth Element. Clueless and, of course, objectively beautiful.

I think the thing with stepparents is that the child being resistant to it is a self fulfilling prophecy in a way. For decades, they have been conditioned by media to expect to feel negatively towards the idea of their parents finding someone new and, in the case of many kid's movies, the concerns are validated by the fact that the stepparent turns out to be awful. I think kids also just don't like a change to the status quo of their lives and, until a certain age, many don't really see their parents as people with separate wants and lives. Couple that with complicated feelings around the reasons why their parent was until that point single.

This movie was something I would watch repeatedly for hours, I loved it a lot! It's so interesting how the change in perspectives make sense as you get older, too. When I was little, I would see the movie from the point of view of someone like Morgan and Giselle, but now as a young adult it gives me a lot of long-lost hope to see Giselle make so many people's lives so much brighter in the situations she finds herself in. Also yes, the actions of the characters are incredibly realistic, especially Robert having Morgan sleep in his room since Giselle is staying the night. I never got that as a kid, but I do now.

And the truth is that she actually wants her fairy tale) I think, that the main plot of this story is not about "you need time to know each other". Its about "If you are ment to be, than three days are enough... And if you are not, than five years would not help"

10:35 Exactly. Just because our dad died on us doesn't mean my mom deserves love less? I felt that way even as a kid. Sure her choices kinda sucked, but I wanted that for her pretty badly. It really does vary though....she's single now, I encourage her to get out there, my sister thinks it's weird for her to. Everybody's thoughts on this depend. And another thing lol @ 32:17 I think the problem is we focus too much on self-love and not self-respect, funnily enough what the soap opera woman mentions. It's an absolute must, but self-love is I feel....kind of unattainable for a significant portion of the population, and acting like it's a character flaw if you can't get there is actually pretty disgusting if you ask me.

Her naivete ended when she experienced anger. As soon as her innocence was lost, she noticed Robert's shirt collar was open, exposing his chest/chest hair. honestly i don’t think giselle was childlike it’s just what we perceive as a society of what childlike is, she’s seen childlike because she doesn’t understand our world and believes in fairytales and is surprised and shocked by all the new things. honestly i find nothing wrong with her and robert because his elle is just a bit naive but does adapt very quickly to the real world whereas a child would take a lot longer. it’s shown that giselle lives in a tree which means she probably is subject to danger quite a lot especially in a universe where actual villains and trolls and stuff exist she’s just highly idealistic because she actually knows she’s getting happily ever after at some point. also the thing with her relationship with robert is that she understands how things like sex works but the kiss is the epitome of love and that’s what could ruins relationships and obviously because people marry like a day after meeting sex isn’t a massive widespread things people do with just whoever

In case you're wondering about Nancy's arc and her somewhat sudden happy ending with Edward (which didn't show us how their relationship worked out in the fairytale world, maybe they'll show it in the sequel), there's actually a deleted scene that confirms that she is indeed a hopeless romantic in need of a fairytale-like romance. 🙂 Why did they deleted that scene? I love all the cameos and Easter eggs in this movie, but my favorite behind-the-scenes fact is about the music. At the 2008 Oscars, almost all the original songs in this movie were nominated for Best Song. This was unprecedented and a huge boon for legendary composer Alan Menken-the Disney music legend of the Disney Renaissance-but the kicker was Enchanted did not win Best Song. Despite the loss, though, there was some anger at the fact that so many songs were nominated from the same movie, so the Academy made a new rule that still stands: Best Song category nominations are limited to one song per film, and during the preliminary nominations the limit is two songs per film, with the favorite of the two getting the official Oscar nomination and being eligible for the category award. I’ve noticed you mainly do contemporary-esque movies, so I’m wondering if you’d do a commentary for a period film? There’s a great Disney movie called Wild Hearts Can’t Be Broken that tells the true story of Sonora Webster, a 1920/30s horse diving girl. It’s right in line with your women empowerment vibe and it’s a wonderful drama with a fantastic message.

@@ItsAsparageese Back in American history of performance acts, horse diving was incredibly popular. A pretty woman in a swimsuit climbed up to a very high platform, her horse was released to run up the platform ramp, and she’d jump on its back as it dove off the platform into the waiting tank of water below. It was a great spectacle and for the most part the horses were treated very well. Especially the Carver horses, which is who Sonora worked for. Sadly, accidents did happen. To both horse and rider. I highly recommend the movie. And even some research into Sonora Webster Carver herself. She married into the Carver family. Amazing woman.
