don't get how client side encryption works. lets say there are 5 users on 5 different laptops. only one user is allowed decryption. this means the key has to be stored locally on the lap top.

Why would only one user be allowed encryption?

You would control that by Policies. Who can actually decrypt. Key would never be stored. You would ask KMS to give you the symmetric key in plaintext. Based upon your access levels as defined by IAM Policies, KMS would either use the master key, decrypt the data key and send it to you in plain text for decryption or deny it completely.
