End of a Superpower - The Collapse of the Soviet Union | History Documentary
Watch 'Gulag - The Story' here: • Gulag - The Story | Pa...
Once upon a time there was a country, a gigantic confederation of states, one of the largest dominion in history.
On December 25, 1991, the Soviet Union collapsed. Along with it came hope for the end of the Cold War, for independence and freedom for the former Soviet republics. But for many it also brought poverty and war. What remains of the dreams of that time? What does freedom look like today, which in large parts still has to be defended and fought for? What role does Russia play in the post-Soviet power structure? We talk to contemporary witnesses and politicians of the decisive years, search for traces of the former multi-ethnic empire in Kyrgyzstan, Ukraine, Chechnya and Lithuania, and talk to experts about this gigantic historic upheaval.

I lived through the Soviet times in the 80s and and early 90s. Throughout the 80s people had jobs and food was plentiful in the stores, once the 90s came around it was a complete turnaround, hardly any decent paying jobs and the stores were rationing food. In 1994 we said f**k it and me and my family moved to the United States. It was like being from another planet, needless to say I never went back to visit or anything.

For the same reason as Kennedy threatened to invade Cuban. Russia fears that NATO could use Ukraine as a bridgehead to undermine the Russian Federation. Incidentally, NATO nations have been spending more than ten times as much on arms than Russia. For that reason alone it is easy to calculate which side was planning aggression towards the other.

Nato is bs excuse for Putin. Putin wants Ukraine and he wants russian empire back what is impossible without Ukraine in it. If Russia was a good neighbour, there would be no need to join Nato to be secured. Putin blames Russia's victims for calling the police. Ukraine has no nukes, Ukraine is not Nato member state and Putin knows he can invade non Nato neighbours only. Nato never invaded or hurt Russia. Russia loves annexing its neighbours everytime it can. War in Ukraine is about Putin's ego and russian greed. Nato is bs excuse. Nobody was going to invade Russia. Russia has nukes. It’s interesting how this documentary obviously is not looked at the current situation in geopolitics, which all along with pretty obvious. Russia is a little bit like a smoker, trying to give up cigarettes, but ending up just doing three or four in the middle of the night, and claiming that they have kicked the habit. If you want real transformation, you need to go cold turkey and follow great examples such as Poland during its shock therapy transition in the 1990s that did not generate a clash of oligarchs. It does have its problems still not to mention encroachments on democracy, but these will be fixed. If you look at economic growth over the past 32 years, China is number one, but number two is Poland, which managed to achieve this while maintaining democracy. I know it might be painful for the Russian of leads to follow Polish example, but I think it would help them eventually to build their own country and contribute to the overall wellness in peace in the world.
