Chicago Cubs

4 жыл бұрын

With just a 2.5 game lead in the division, the Cubs made another trip to New York to face the Mets. From a missed tag to a black cat to the lights going out at Shea Stadium, the Cubs perfect season began to unravel. But the 1969 team brought joy and hope to Cubs fans everywhere.
"We were so close you could reach out and touch it. Then all of the sudden, it slipped away. But everybody remembers the Chicago Cubs of 1969. They love those '69 Cubs." -Billy Williams

This series really brings back some memories. I was 11 years old in 1969 and baseball was my life. I would go to the games and remember all the great players on that team. Ernie Banks would come up in the stands and talk to the kids, all the players were great. I have an autograph baseball collection from the 69 cubs that is priceless to me. It includes HOF Ernie Banks, Billy Williams, Fergie Jenkins and Ron Santo.

The Mets had unbelievable pitching, especially Seaver and Kooseman. They had Nolan Ryan and Tug McGraw coming out of the bullpen. I also think Leo Durocher exhausted his players. He wore them down.

Yep-it was such an exciting time growing up in 1969 New York. I was eleven years old... and I even came out in the opening pilot introduction of Sesame Street! Back then the security at Shea Stadium wasn't as secure as things are today. Once I managed to sneak in with another kid during a regular game and saw the San Francisco Giants play my Mets... another time (when the Mets were on the road), a few of us kids actually climbed the fences behind the outfield wall and eventually were able to get on the playing field, running around... touching the beautiful grass and imagining making catches by the warning track! Oh, those were the days, my friends!!!!! :)

I loved this team and I am a Sox fan, but this is the first real year I remember watching a lot of baseball. Remember watching the World Series a few years before as I collected BB cards with a passion. Spent a week or two with my maternal grandparents and grandpa was a huge Cub fan. My paternal granddad was in a coma in Florida. That's about the same time it all fell apart. Got Fergie's auto on the Sports Illustrated from 1969 at an Iowa Cubs game and lucky enough to meet Ernie, Billy, Ron, and Glenn Beckert at Disney World in 1994 at the Grand Floridian. They were fantastic as I recognized Billy coming out of the door a ways a way and said, "Hey, It's Billy Williams." He smiled and said are you her for the fan fest, told him no but wished we were. Hi then said have you met my friends Ron Santo and Glenn Beckert who were on the bench. Got pictures, didn't ask for autos. Went in and met Ernie also. Class guys. The 1969 CUBS were CLASS.

That Stargell HR was what really sent the Cubs reeling. If Regan retires Stargell, game over and the Cubs stop the bleeding. Instead they hop on the next plane to LaGuardia, get swept by the Mets at Shea, get hexed by the black cat in that same series, and, well...rest is history. At the 6:00 mark the "Sign Man" said it all-Miracle Mets.

The High Point or Peak of the season was 8 19 69. That was day Holtzman threw his 1st No Hitter against a Good Atlanta Braves team. Instead of getting a boost from it, the Cubs went on to lose the next 2 at Wrigley against those same Braves. That's really when it started to go downhill. 3 days earlier on 8 16 69 the Mets started a streak of winning 38 of their last 49 games. After the No Hitter the Cubs went 14 and 26 the rest of the way. The Tag Game in New York and Selma's errant Pickoff Throw in Philly were key losses, too, as well as the Stargell HR off of Regan. But the real Downfall started right after the No Hitter.

I think there are some parallels between the 1969 Cubs and last year's team, with a collapse at the end after leading for so long. However, the one difference is that the '18 team has a ring in their back pocket, so that softened the blow. Plus, they still had a game 163 and a wild card game to play, whereas the '69 team was trying to make fans forget every season since 1945 and hadn't won the title in 61 years at that time. That's what made that season so painful for Cubs players and fans.

There is no comparison to the heart break of '69. They choked as did the 69 Cubs, but last year they were expected to win just like this year. Probably same thing this year, but you can't compare it to the heartbreak of '69. Did you live through '69, I was 11 and still remember it.

The impact of that ‘69 team will outlast the impact of the 1984, 2003 teams that came close and the 2016 World Series champions. The two weeks after Holtzman’s no hitter were the key to the season. By the time the Cubs got to NY 2 1/2 games up, it was over. Durocher may have mismanaged the team, but the team was not deep. Had he rested the key players more during the season, that may have helped the confidence of the lesser players and the health of the key ones. It would be interesting to see how any other manager might have done it.

Durocher mismanaged his team that year. He overplayed the regulars and didn't use his bullpen at all. Every time he went to the bullpen he brought in Regan. JC Martin was traded to the Cubs in 1970 and said that if Hodges had managed the Cubs in 1969 the Cubs would have won.

Conveniently overlooked was on 9/8 Bill Hands knocked Agee down leading off the bottom of the 1st, then Koosman hits Santo on the wrist in the 2nd. In his second AB, Agee took an extra base as the Cubs 'lollygaged' after the ball he hit, that set up the play at the plate. Agee also hit a homer later in the game. Smug and desperate Leo and the Cubs assumed that they could intimidate the Mets - and they were wrong. Hodges platooned at most positions, Leo ran his guys into the ground. Of course one of the Mets grounds crew guys pushed the cat on the field, hey hey holy mackerel no doubt about it!

That’s why Williams usually played in 163 or 164 games. After the Cubs lost a six inning game in June of 1969, called because of darkness, the rule was changed so when a second game of a doubleheader was called because of darkness, it would be resumed later in the season. The rule was later changed to any game called for darkness. The Cubs played 163 games in 1969, plus the four rainouts, which were usually anywhere from 0 to 5 innings.
