My last trip to the US, I had a small art kit for the flight with postcard-sized paper pads. I took the waterfilled brushes with me and a couple Prima palettes, a roll of washi tape, and (don't laugh) a maxipad which I use to blot the wet brush - it has its own sticky back, stays dry, and it's better than wasting paper towels - it will last weeks stuck to the lid of the box. Yes people look oddly at the maxipad. I packed them in a clear plastic sandwich box (for airport security to look at) and used these on the plane to pass the time. I packed larger art-pads in my suitcase. I was going to buy more when there as the prices for supplies is better in the US than in AU. Have an amazing trip! Looking forward to what you see in WA!

Can we just talk about how amazing the little nugget of you talking about being Time Rich vs Money Rich, and how amazing that is!? Honestly, I would love an entire vloggy episode of you discussing that, and how you came to that place.

For traveling with a fountain pen, you either have it empty or completely full. Is when the air inside of the converter/cartridge/inkwell expands in altitude that they can “explode”. It is still a good practice to wrap it in towels and plastic, though. I do that as well. I do the same thing with my ink bottles, put them in plastic bags with towels inside to absorb the ink in case any gets out.

Hi Sarah! I found a great way to distract myself on the plane and chase away fear: Draw on your ipad! No muss-no fuss-no paints-just draw and paint away. I usually give myself a 3 hr project. I work on inventing paintings for future oil paintings or correcting ones I've already done. It works! It really helps. Hope you have a wonderful trip! -Melissa from Florida

I hate to fly, too, and am paranoid about Covid, but I recently survived a trip from Eugene, OR to Boston, MA and back, and had a great time with my older son and his family. I had a great time, and was able to stay relatively calm (packed everything in my backpack, thanks to light summer clothes and washing machines). No art supplies or cameras; had to keep it simple. ❤

Re fountain pens, I travelled with a disposable fountain pen and I didn’t have an issue. They say if the pen is filled with ink you don’t have a problem because there isn’t any excess air in the converter or body to expand and cause the leaking. Others say the nibs need to be pointed up on take off and landing, example tucked in to the seat pocket in front you. If you keep all your fountain pens in one case this would be relatively easy. Another alternative is to invest in a vacuum filled or eye dropper filled pen with a shut off valve. The TWSBI Vac, a Opus 88 eyedropper, or the WingSung 699 are some of the cheaper options. Enjoy your trip!

Congrats on the Craftamo brush set collaboration. They do really lovely sets of brushes. Myriam Tillson created a set that I wanted to get, but I had most of the brush shapes already and I really couldn't justify buying more at this time. I do, however need lots of flat brushes and I too like long soft bristles, so yours should be perfect. Don't stress about the travel, focus on the goal.

I can't wait for your brush set!!! I've been looking at another set from same company which the watercolor artist has different color handles w creative artist sayings on them. I'm a sucker for colors but the brushes weren't my shapes. Now I'm 100% sure I share your brush preferences. Excited!!!

Aaw that looks well thought out Sarah. I have a small travel sketch/paint kit that lives in my car, l never need to think about what to take now, unless l need to top up. Just love the TOMBO pens. I think l need to visit the Logie Steading looks so nice, will check it out. I felt you were travelling on the black Isle, those rolling fields. I love fountain pens! I haven't flown before, but I have friends who do. And any vacuum filler pens will be just fine if closed properly before your flight. I use the TWSBI Vac 700/700R. Alternatively, don't fill your pen until you get where you're going :D Also really love how you picked what you'll travel with, art supply wise. I am the worst at simplifying my kit enough as I am not a plein air painter usually lol

The fude pen RULES. But for traveling, yeah, fountain pens can be dangerous. It’s almost best to fly with them empty, and put in a cartridge when you get there. I have a couple of Opus 88 demonstrators, these are eye dropper pens that can be closed down to prevent the leaks caused by pressure changes. However, I bet the Preppy makes it just fine. Those are incredible little pens. I refill mine with pigment inks, I love Kakimori inks in different colors.

I have the same issues around flying, and it can be dreadful. The thing that has helped me the most is listening to guided Yoga Nidra and meditation practices. I practice fairly regularly at home and then have several that are especially good for the airport and in flight. The flying ones all contain guided, progressive relaxation practices or are yoga nidras geared toward restful sleep. Some of my favorite recordings are by Jon Kabat-Zinn, Molly Birkholm, Karen Brody, and various iRest Yoga Nidra practitioners, if you are interested in checking them out. It's really effective help. Have a wonderful restorative time!

For you fountain pen, it should be completely full or empty. It's the air that expands and pushes the ink out the nib. I'd fill it completely, then empty it out when you leave. Welcome to the U.S. I hope you have a wonderful visit.

Craftamo Brush Set cool! Like Emma. I bought hers and it is great for Flowers. Flying is my Favorit travelling type only say to you that it is very safe, and you should enjoy it with painting and watching the clouds and the countries from up above. That is amazing if there is no fog. And I wish to you that you get in future so much money you can buy Business class Tickets. I had the luck one time and its so much fun when you have space and a comfort bed to sleep. And you get fresh of the airplane like freshly started. Have a nice trip home. US is amazing like Scotland I was so impressed by this big beautiful country and will be back anytime to see much more. All the best for you from Germany.

Hope your time here in the US is lovely! (Kinda wish you were doing a tour / meet-ups, but then it'd be a working trip, not family time, eh?) Re: fountain pens ("FPs"): I've flown several times with a full Pelikan (piston-filler) & had no issue at all. For a cartridge pen like your Preppy, just travel with the empty pen + the new unopened cartridges - then there's no way it can leak. Converter pens are probably riskier, but your precautions should be more than enough. And of course our larger cities have FP shops, so ultimately no worries. Safe journeys Sarah! 😊

I pack the same way as you do, putting all out first to just visualize what I need on a trip! How exciting Sarah. Your own brushes. I will have to check them out when you get them all done. I am always looking for the perfect gouache brush as well. I like golden taklon but one is not always the same as another. So I look forward to this. Also I was loving your table covering for your fair. I love the stretchiness to it and how it can be tucked under legs. It looks sleek and very functional for those windy days. Which probably are every day in Scotland!!! Oh and my son just got married August 27th and was able to wear my Scottish tartan. He wore the ancient hunting tartan. It took 8 months just to get the right fabric before they made it for him. He looked amazing in his kilt on the wedding day. I was so proud that he represented “Ross” that day since he is also Irish “Cullen” I bought him a special sporran with the Cullen coat of arms on it so he had both incorporate in the wedding.

Love packing videos and travel supply videos!! I’d be tossing the extra markers and micro painter in another small pencil case for Wolfie’s backpack. You’ll be gone for a few weeks and who knows what you might like to use! At the very least, I’d be tossing the markers in his bag, I can only be so minimalist lol. Are there any art stores that you’ve missed in the states and will be visiting? Certain foods? Can’t wait for your trip recap in a few weeks. Safe travels!!

Awww...I'm sorry you are a nervous flyer! We are opposite, I don't enjoy packing but love flying. Sounds like you need to transplant your family and friends to Scotland so you don't have to fly anymore. 😂 Washington? Washington State? Gaahh! Would be sooo fun to meet up if you end up in the north of Seattle-ish area. 😊 If you come to the state and you have time you absolutely should take the drive over the North Cascades to Winthrop, stop at the top of Washington pass, walk to the look out area and paint Liberty Bell💞 I can take you there. It's only an hour or so from my house. 👍 There is soo much inspiration from my home to Winthrop. I'm certainly lucky to be planted here. Safe travels! As far as taking fountainpens on planes, I think something about the altitude does make the ink spill so I’ve heard the best way to fly is with an empty pen & either take cartridges or some ink in those little sample bottles, & fill the pen when you get there 🤷‍♀️ Sorry! I hope you guys have a wonderful trip coming back to the US for holiday. Here in California we are coming off a week of high temperatures, some of them over 110 degrees Fahrenheit. What we wouldn't give for some cool even wet weather. I'm not a fan of airports, I don't object to the flying so much. I am looking forward to that brush set. I also am a fan of the Sailor fude pens for sketching with other without watercolors. Thirty years ago or so then HRH Prince of Wales came out with a book of his watercolour paintings. The back of the dust cover shows him seated on the grass with his sketchbook. I'm going to look through it again now that he is King Charles.

A thought about traveling with fountain pens… this is always a concern for me since I live in Colorado and the altitude makes everything explode! I have packed my pen empty and brought a very small bottle of ink separately, filling the pen when I arrive at my destination. In the video I noticed you were using a pen with a pump, so this may be an option. BREATHE❣️

You are SOOO "Sweet" and "Cute"... Sarah...and I mean this in the most sincere way...Loved your AMAZING photography...and your words and your 2 beautiful cats... We are here, @ Kookatsoon Lake, in The Yukon, Canada...after September 14/15...My Sweet Blue Eyes...14 pound Siamese mix......and me, after losing a dog a month ago,Miss Ruby, and now...Little Chelsea Green...my 7 pounder...both onto their 7th year and in their prime.....they came together, though not related from the Marge of Lake Laberge..in the summer of 2016. .Little Chelsea Green...went missing on the days mentioned. above, ..we think it was an Owl..."swooping down in the dark..."...I try to keep hope....but it is with a heavy heart I am writing this post.. .I am now with my grieving cat Big /Sweet Blue Eyes...a 14 pounder...Chelsea was 7 pounds..... Blue Eyes is .a grieving cat ...Chelsea Green...was his girlfriend BIG TIME...AND BASICALLY ..."MY CAT"...following me everywhere and sitting on my lap to purr...now it is just the two of us...Blue and I...and we are not friends like Chelsea and I were...so I am working with his different personality and his grieving for his "girlfriend" Chelsea Green... I have never before seen a cat bereave/grieve like this before... He keeps looking at the window where she always scratched to get in...going on day 5...I try to comfort him...and we are starting a different relationship...hopefully going to new and better places of love and beyond. . I am so happy that you are going back for a visit to your home place.. I.love how you pack...reminding me of myself...but much more efficient!!!!... but I think...you need to take BOTH PAINT SETS AND ALL THE TOMBOWS AND more even...more paper and brushes... I wish you the best trip ever in a plane...I am also leery of travelling...but it is not so much about planes...just all the confusion and rules set by others...that I can't figure out. I'll be waving from BC, just north of WA! Do you ever use your Tombow markers and then apply water? I have been watching lots of videos about the colours in the black ink of the "Elegant Writer Caligraphy Pen" so I tried all my other pens and markers ... they "bleed, spread, melt, bloom ..." into the most lovely shades of pink, green, blue and even purple. Just in case you needed another option for colour in your sketchbook - I tried the Tombow N15 and spritzed with water - so lovely!

I’m looking to get gouache brushes. I find my watercolour ones too thick. Gonna get yours when they’re out!
