Jazz may not be the first thing that comes to mind when you think of The Juilliard School, but perhaps this series of Tiny Desks will change that. Tiny Desk and Jazz Night in America celebrate the 20th anniversary of Juilliard Jazz with three Tiny Desk concerts featuring performances by current students and alumni of the prestigious institution.
Nikki Birch | August 29, 2022
Clad in a fringed, royal blue halter suit, bassist Endea Owens and her band The Cookout were all smiles. Although she’s no stranger to the Tiny Desk (playing with Jon Batiste in 2020) Owens was giddy with excitement to perform her own music with fellow Juilliard alumni. She spoke about the importance of using her music to speak for the voiceless, and to build and enrich communities. She’s not all talk either - during the COVID-19 pandemic, the house bassist for The Late Show with Stephen Colbert has hosted community cookouts, playing music for people in Harlem and handing out hundreds of free meals.
The first tune “Where the Nubians Grow” is a head-bobbing groove dedicated to her hometown of Detroit. With “Feel Good,” her fierce intro gives way to a catchy bass line that the band joyfully hopscotches over. Owens then dims the proverbial lights with “Love Cynical” a song that gives ballroom jazz with silky horn lines and a sensuous beat. Before we can get too cozy, the band erupts into “Cycles,” a dizzying showcase for horns and drums.
To close her shows, Owens always asks audiences to participate in affirmations allowing a continuation of the positive vibes. After a brief introduction of “Lift Every Voice and Sing” the band plays “For the People (In dedication to Taleshia Chandler),” another uplifting number. This Tiny Desk energized the whole room, each musician a master of their instrument. Owens joked: “We are all Juilliard alumni, so you can hear it in the sound.”

Tight, talented ensemble. Every now and again I hear old people like me say something negative about the current state and/or future of jazz. I just shake my head and think they must not be paying attention. Jazz is in very good hands indeed.

This can be said for most if not all genres. At times one might have to look into more "niche" musicians or even outside one's own country or language, but there's plenty of good music out there.

I grew up in the era of R and B but got introduced to Jazz by my dad. I went to college with a lot of kids from New York, Jersey, and Philly. They liked R and B but they were heavy into Jazz (Miles, Pharaoh Sanders, Gary Bart’s, Sun Ra, Herbie Hancock, etc.). That is when I really developed a liking for it.

Never be ashamed of your love for jazz. Half the popular music today is trash. It may be fun for a moment, but most hold little to no merit as true music. Keep listening to and loving your Jazz. There's nothing wrong with it. 🎶

Great playing, great compositions and a great sound together. Very nice. Did anybody notice at 11:35 how the drummer did the finger slide note on the tom perfectly voiced and in time in the middle of the tune. This is usually a conga player move who is already playing hands (not sticks). Impressive and quite appropriate for the song. Just saw in the notes that it's Lee Pearson (didn't recognize the dreads), a heavyweight indeed.

@rembeadgc
@rembeadgc Жыл бұрын
@@TheSyncmaster740 The wild thing here is the fact that a drumset drummer is doing it. 99.9% of the time it's a conga player doing it, but Lee Pearson's got it down and didn't miss a beat. He does it about 3 times in this one song. As a musical note, his execution is perfect.
@MixingGBP
@MixingGBP Жыл бұрын
Ha, I've heard this a million times in music but never realized you can do this on the drums. I thought it came from a wind instrument. I noticed he wet his fingers really quickly before the slide. Cool technique!
@rembeadgc
@rembeadgc Жыл бұрын
@@MixingGBP Yeah. Generally it's done on the congas. It's a percussionist move, but can be done on any instrument with a sizable resonating head. Wetting the finger tip increases the friction between the finger and the head so that after the musician produces a tone by hitting the drum the finger slide causes the head to continue resonating at a maintained pitch until the slide stops or the musician runs out of space on the head. It's an intuitive marriage of art and physics, which all music is, really.
