Episode Notes: - Timecodes are available in the description! - The sound app on my phone is called Spectroid. I did my best to interpret the results of the spectrum but some results were subtle and open to interpretation. The phone microphone is not as sensitive as a dedicated meter. - The Silent Board was provided by Creality for evaluation. No money was paid for this review. I just did this very upgrade this morning. The primary difference is that my original board had every single connector covered in hot glue blobs. It was really difficult to get the plugs out without damaging the wires or the actual connector. All done now and WOW is it quiet. I pressed the bloody z axis advance about 5 times before I realised it was actually going and I just couldn’t hear it!! 👍👍 Btw. Keep the E5+ vids coming. They’re excellent!

Even when adding a direct driver to my printer I didn't need increase the voltage for the extruder motor even after I added an extra 1.5 ft of wire extension. Thank you for showing the proper attachment for the power wires. I did exactly what you explained not to do (over-inserted the wires and compressed the shielding instead of the wire). Kris, Great video, very fair and lots of good information. After watching this, I'm glad that I went with the TH3D EZboard. I had already installed it on my two Ender 5's, so made sense to add it to the 5 Plus. It is a much more costly option since they just raised the price to $120 and about $25 for the LCD swap. Now it's like I have three Ender 5's - just one with a bigger build area. Some advantages are, their software and on-line compiler, the motors current can be set from firmware or the display screen - no pots to turn, Change Z offset from the display panel, and the many other commands that are just not on the touch screen. I would recommend using a Creality LCD as it only has one cable and hooks up exactly the same as the Ender 5, and is the same price.

My multi-meter just arrived tonight so I thought I was test to see what my numbers were at: X: 1.26 Y: 1.26 Z: 1.25 E0: 1.29 E1: 1.23 (note E1 isn't used) I raised E0 up to 1.4 to match yours. The factory default on my silent board ended up coming in at 1.2, 1.2, 1.6 and 1.4 volts. I had been having problems with a loud "thunk" and a layer shift on long prints. I think lowering the voltages down today thanks to this video above to 0.6, 0.66, 1.0 and leaving the Extruder at 1.4 Volts will help. I falsely assumed that the Vrefs would be set at the factory and really I shouldn't have made that assumption. It is Creality after all. They're cheap.

It is going to be a bit of a change to not know from across the house what stage my print is at! Plug and play install. Only need to check those Esteps if you have a modded extruder (I have a MicroSwiss direct drive) and adjust the print height back to where it was before. Those ultimately meant, I need(ed) to watch it for some learning. At 58 db that is do-able, at 63 db it is literally a headache. And then, yes of course, I ran into the voltage issue you are resolving herein in a fashion that I can understand. So, thank you again.

I'm about to purchase my 1st 3d printer. I was going to buy the Ender 5, but after watching all the upgrade videos and calculating what it would cost to do I figured the 5 pro would be better because the upgrades were mostly complete. Now looking at the plus. I don't think I'd mind the noise for my first one. It is disappointing to see that the power supply provided is insufficient. Even with that I still think I'm going to get the plus. It looks like there is at least a months backorder though. I have enjoyed all your videos. Just a bit of warning to anyone who receives the board that is pre-flashed for the 5 plus from Creality. It comes flashed with V1.70.3 BL and it is buggy. It starts in Chinese, and if you change the language to English, it immediately changes back to Chinese the next menu selection you make. I hear there are some z axis issues as well, but I haven't had an opportunity to re do the firmware back to .70.2 BL yet. @@kerseyfabs Thanks for your quick answer! I think I did a beginners mistake and installed the whole kit at once. My Silent Board came with a capricorn tube and new nozzles. I skipped the nozzles but installed the new bowden tube and after some tests yesterday I think that might be the problem. I removed it and measured the Filament pushed by the extruder without the tube attached and it was pretty acurate (about 2mm off). But with the tube attached it was more like 40mm off. The print looks like some kind of underextrusion is going on. There are visible lines where to less filament was extruded on the benchy and the chimney broke off, after I touched it a bit, because the layers didn't bond well. I think, I'll try to use the old tubing again (I hope I didn't damage it on removal), but I still have no idea, why the new tubing that came with the board isn't working.

Further: Do you think, there is a comprehensible reason, why Creality chose to not put an air cooler on the most stressed E driver on the loud (old) board? My silent replacement board doesn't have one either. I am asking, as I was under the impression, that the power consumption on the E motor has been left as the designed bottleneck on the board. Sounds wild, but I had the impression Creality consented to a board breaking down there as opposed to shifting too high a power draw onto the too weak PSU.
@kerseyfabs
@kerseyfabs 4 жыл бұрын
I actually don't think that the E stepper driver is going to heat up that much more than the other steppers. After all, it doesn't move as fast as the others and shouldn't draw as much power. The stepper driver is limiting the stepper motor because of the way it operates and provides a signal.

So, assuming that you're happy with the results you've been getting from the stock board, wouldn't it be prudent to check voltage on the original drivers before pulling the board, then set the new board's accordingly? I'm also curious about the need for z-offset recalibration, especially if your removing the power supply/control box from the frame rather than laying the printer on its side. Similar curiosity for e-steps and PID tune. If you've grabbed the original settings via M503, what's the likelihood that they would be different for the new board?

- The drivers on the board are completely different, so the voltages needed will not the same between the two. - Yes, you do need to redo Z-offset and bed leveling. All settings on the old board go with it, so you'll need to set everything up again. - It's possible your PID tune and e-steps will be the same between boards but you might as well re-calibrate just in case.
@OriginalDodgeDeBoulet
@OriginalDodgeDeBoulet 4 жыл бұрын
@@kerseyfabs Thanks for the response. My question re: specifically z-offset and e-steps is that they're based on static, mechanical factors of the printer; those *shouldn't* change between boards, unless somehow the stock and quiet boards are calculating distances, and therefore controlling the steppers, differently. Or the voltages delivered to the steppers differ, which is why I thought grabbing them before changing the board might make things easier. Bed-leveling is of course a given, in that any time you turn a frame screw (never mind 4 of them to remove the PS/controller housing) you change the geometry of the frame. I'm just sitting here thinking how nice it would be to issue an M503, clean its output up a bit, and feed it back in after the board swap. Save it with an M500, level the bed, and you're back in business 😉😁

I have been through yours and countless others leveling videos (all basically the same). I have set the left and right height to the bottom of the hot end gantry using a 123 machinist block. Heated both hotend and bed to temps and let set for 10 mins. Set z offset using a metal 0.04 feeler gauge. Manually adjusted all 4 corners using the 0.04 feeler gauge (6 rounds of that) and then ran a mesh. Boy was I shocked. Back left corner is a +8.525mm Front Right is at -10.216 Rest of the readings are all over the place and not matter how many times I do this, the readings change, but measuring point #10 is ALWAYS at 0.00 Board came with 1.70.3 BL firmware installed. No way there can be a 18mm difference across a relatively flat bed as checked with a machinists ruler... small ripples with gaps of 0.015 or less. So is this a bad BL Touch probe itself? Bad Silent Board? a hiccup with the firmware?

I am yet to discover a Creality printer that has a fully working BL Touch firmware by Creality, what is it with Creality, does the guy that writes the firmware not know what he is doing? There are loads of features on Marlin that are of benefit to users and in most cases, it is just a case of enabling these features, most of the Creality BL Touch firmware doesn't even have the X, Y offset values set or baby-stepping which are the 2 most important settings for ABL. Prior to upgrading some of my Creality printers with the Creality BL Touch kit, I was somewhat a Creality fanboy but after experiencing their BL Touch kit things have changed. I upgraded four of their printers and contacted them in respect of each product purchase and only got one reply which basically said contact the retailer it is their baby, well I was contacting the retailer as it was Creality from whom I purchased, but why they think a third party retailer can fix their faulty firmware for which they neglected to release the Marlin INO file is beyond me. I have been educated by Creality to never buy a Creality product again as they just don't care

Hi Chris, I understand you followed a somewhat serenpeditious route towards the Voltages set on the TMC2130 steppers. When coming from the regular Ender 5 plus mainboard to the silent one, the resistors are going from 100 mOhm to 150 mOhm. Does this indicate any insight into the permissible max Voltages? I understand you opted to stay as low as would fit the job and made an exception on the E motor drive, that just needs it. In my hands, having changed the Bowden extruder for the CR10 Max's dual gear unit (as I could just not get any PETG through the system), it definitely needs more bang to do its job. So, can you quantify the limit/target? Thanks a million again for your deep and most helpful work.

Thomas, my apologies for the lack of a timely response. This one was relatively involved and I don't like to give half answers. Thanks for the video, i did this upgrade back in january as soon as i saw that the silent board was avaibile. The noise from the default board killed my mind. The printer worked over 30h just great with the default board before i switched it. After switching i instantly got problems with cracking sounds from the extruder und cloking up the hotend, wich i never experienced before. After fideling with the hotend and the ptfe tube i realized that in the way the default hotend was put togehter in my printer, there was a gap between the tube and the nozzel, wich suprisingly never cause a problem with the default board. I has orderd a micro swiss hotend and a capricon tube before i found this error, and will replace the parts in future, but for now i managed to fix the stock hotend so i had a cupple of prints since them, wich worked out the same as before. But after your video i will check the voltages oft this stepper drivers as well, because it seams that the silent board is change the way the printer performes beside the noise thing.

I REALLY appreciate that the stepper voltages are included in your video for the Ender 5 Plus with Silent Board. Now, that you have been hopefully using this printer for the last few months, are you still happy with your stepper reference voltages or have you made any further changes to them? I need to get this ruled out in my setup, and would appreciate an update or confirmation regarding how things are going for you, if possible? I am getting a layer shift that as far as I can tell is not related to bed adhesion or warping. After printing the same tall model multiple times, I get the failure around the same point in the print and a couple times I have heard the "thunk" sound of the stepper not moving and then suddenly moving violently, but the print was adhered to the bed nicely. So, before my next print, I'll set the stepper voltages to the ones you found 0.6, 0.6, 1.0, and 1.4V for XYZ and E. I, too, will probably bump my Y voltage up to 0.66 because that motor is driving two belts and the weight of the x gantry carriage assembly. I'll try to pay better attention to the heating of my stepper motors.
@underourrock
@underourrock 4 жыл бұрын
For anyone else interested, I found my factory default values to be 1.2, 1.2, 1.6 and 1.4 volts for XYZ and E in that order. This might explain why after a long enough print time I would get a loud thunk sound and a stepper would suddenly jerk (Usually the Y stepper, I think, but I am not certain of this). This underscores the importance of not just installing the SIlent Board upgrade as if it were plug and play but to actually set the Vrefs at that time. I erroneously assumed that the Vrefs would be close enough to use it and I could just adjust it later. I see, now, that I should have changed them right away. I think I did try to find the Vrefs when I went to install my board and your video wasn't out yet and I didn't easily find the specs, but I probably should have contacted Creality directly for that info. Seeing how incredibly high the voltages were to begin with, I settled on 0.66, 0.7, 1.0, and 1.4 volts for XYZ and E. X and Y are a little higher current, but seeing how the printer ran at 1.2V for X and Y for so long and didn't have problems until I started getting into really long prints, I think this will be okay. I will pay careful attention to my stepper motor temperature on long prints now. They were definitely warm before, but I didn't measure it. I'll be sure to measure the temperatures and keep a better eye on it. Kersey, Your video was extremely helpful to me. Thank you!

The clicking is not a voltage issue. Assuming he has his extruder e-steps calibrated correctly then he has the nozzle too close to the bed. When that happens, it does not let the filament out quickly enough for the filament his stepper is trying to feed in. This puts a lot of strain on the extruder stepper motor and the clicking is the extruder gear digging into the filament trying to compress the backed-up filament. If he goes back to his z offset and raises it a bit, it will let the filament flow and the clicking will stop. You cannot compress a liquid (even if it is plastic) so you must slow down the feed or open the gap. No power changes are needed.

I'm sorry. I don't have that setup available to take the measurement. You usually can increase it in 0.1V increments or even 0.2V as long as your motors aren't too hot. I don't know the max voltage though.

@@kerseyfabs it's OK, and thanks. The problem manifested when I changed to a dual spur gear extruder and that stalled the stepper. I had an old Bondtech extruder so I switched to it and that solved the problem without upping the stepper current.

Makes me wonder what good VREF values for the stock board would be. Did you ever have any overheat issues with those voltages?

Yeah, I've thought about figuring out voltages on the stock board but I haven't had a chance. I never had any problems with the settings in this video.

Thanks for such great videos! I upgraded my PSU to a mean well SE-600-24 and upgraded to the silent board. After a few issues (one of the hotend leads came loose after i buttoned up) the hotend and bed are heating up just fine. However now when I choose the leveling option from the display, the bed crashes into the hotend. Also, not sure if this is relevant, but the bltouch led is a solid red. Thanks for any suggestions you can offer.

It sounds like your BLtouch wires (probably the 3-pin) are not correct. Double check those and make sure they're right.

I am seeing a 2.1 board on their website, yet I see on amazon they offer a 2.2 version board. Are all of the 2.1 version boards just not updated and in fact the latest 2.2 firmware? Can you confirm? They no longer have a chat app on the site to ask.

Are you sure you're on the right website? I don't see a 2.1 board on the official website. Here's my link from the description: bit.ly/E5PSilentBoard

Are you also planning to try other boards, like SKR 1.4? I would like to switch to SKR, but Im wondering if the Creality Touch screen will be possible to use. From what I have found it has its own firmware, and communicates with the printer using GCodes - kinda like Raspberry Pi. But I have not seen any information about how to configure this, if its even possible.

Yes! More boards are coming in a couple/few weeks, depending on how much time I have to devote to it and how well it goes. There are people working on the existing touchscreen but I don't plan to save it given that other displays offer so much more functionality.

Kersey Fabrications ok good to know. When you connect the new board could you just try to plug the original screen anyway? Without giving it too much attention, just to see what happeneds :)

Is the E5+ end-of-life? Most parts out of stock...

Not that I'm aware of. It's in high demand and it's difficult for them to keep it in stock. I just ordered a couple of weeks ago.

Hi Kersey, It looks like Creality is already out of stock on the silent board. Since the only differences are the tmc 2208, would you be able to create a video on how to replace those drivers?
@kerseyfabs
@kerseyfabs 4 жыл бұрын
A couple of things: 1) The steppers are soldered on the mainboard. So unless you have serious soldering skills, it's not very feasible. 2) There are other components on the board such as resistors that would also have to be changed out. 3) Check out my new video series on how to use Bigtreetech components to upgrade the printer. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/orGJaNyem9uVZ58.html I hope this helps.

Hey! Thank you for the video. Before doing the upgrade my E5P always match the preview time on cura, now it's around 25% slower. Any ideia if this is fixable?

Have you set your acceleration and jerk settings inside of Cura? If not, then that may be where the differences are coming from.
